Pitt is ahead of PSU! Is it first time? I kinda notice that Pitt becomes more popular in DC area.

RE: 2021 US News Rankings
Does anyone have access to past rankings for this? Every time I try to look at past years, the current year pops up.

I know Louisville is bringing up the rear in the conference, but I am curious to see the progress that has been made here. I am pretty sure last year, Louisville was something like 192. And I think Louisville was routinely in the 200's for much of it's recent past.

I know that Louisville will never be at the top of these lists --- the mission of the school would prevent that. But I know that they have been working very hard, to improve the metrics that are measured in these kinds of rankings.

Does anyone know where to find past year rankings?

Thanks in advance ...

I believe this is last year's list:

ACC:
10. Duke
15. Notre Dame
27. Wake Forest
28. Virginia
29. Georgia Tech
29. North Carolina
37. Boston College
54. Syracuse
57T. Florida State
57T. U of Miami
57T. Pitt
70. Clemson
74. Virginia Tech
84. NC State
192. Louisville

That said, you're right - these lists don't seem to have years on them...

Pitt and PSU were tied last year. Considering Pitt's incoming freshman have had ~100 point higher SAT scores for the last 20 years or so, and Pitt has larger R&D spending and federal grants, it is not surprising. It's only in things like guidance counselor surveys, which are nothing more than popularity ratings, that you see large advantages of PSU over Pitt compared to any actual quantitative metrics.

PSU also games their admissions stats by by first funneling a good many of their University Park students through their 19 branch campuses.

RE: 2021 US News Rankings
I found this from 2018:

MIND-BLOWER
According to U.S. News & World Report, there are six universities with FBS football programs ranked among the Top 20 academic schools in the nation. Stanford comes in at No. 5, Duke is at No. 9, Northwestern is tied for No. 11, Rice and Vanderbilt are tied at No. 14 and Notre Dame is at No. 18.

This Saturday’s clash – using academic rankings – between #5 Duke and #9 Northwestern - Noon EST, appropriately on ESPNU - is one of only four times in 2018 that two of the best academic institutions in the country will face off at the highest level of college football. It’s also the only such matchup that doesn’t include #18 Notre Dame.

Here’s a look at the other “brain bowls” this season.
#14 Vanderbilt at #18 Notre Dame – Saturday, Sept. 15, 2:30pm EST, NBC
#5 Stanford at #18 Notre Dame – Saturday, Sept. 29, 7:30pm EST, NBC
#18 Notre Dame at #9 Northwestern – Saturday, Nov. 3

Look US News is only one methodology of ranking, and it caters to its customers, so you have to take it with a grain of salt because it is a huge commercial enterprise (it is US News' biggest money maker). That said, it is the most widely known in the US and has had the most influence. But it is only one system and focuses only on the undergraduate component of an institution and that focus is entirely based on US News' own opinion of what should be important. US News' methodology changes almost every year as well, so you have to take year-to-year comparisons with at grain of salt.

That said, here are Louisville's rankings over the last 10 years (or since the Fall 2011, which would be called the 2012 rankings):
2011: 164
2012: 160
2013: 161
2014: 161
2015: 168
2016: 171
2017: 165
2018: 171
2019: 192
2020: 176

Honestly, the movement here is uninterpretable with the changes to the methodologies US News has made over this period.

Shows you Louisville has no business in the ACC ... at least academically. They're an embarrassment to the conference. They're ranked lower in 2021 than Mississippi! UConn would've fit the ACC's academic (and geographic) profile way better.

But at least Louisville is better than West Virginia!

RE: 2021 US News Rankings
They added a lot of schools to the national university rankings in 2019 from the regional rankings so a lot of schools dropped last year. Good to see Louisville rebound somewhat this year.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the 14th consecutive year, the Atlantic Coast Conference leads the way among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences in the “Best Colleges” rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.

Notables from this year’s rankings:

The ACC has led the FBS conferences in best average rank in each of the last 14 years.
The average rank of ACC schools is 54, tops among all FBS Conferences.
The ACC’s two schools among the top 20 of this year’s rankings ties for the most among peer conferences.
The ACC's five schools ranked in the top 30 are the most among FBS conferences.
The ACC is also the only FBS conference with eight member institutions among the top 50 – four more than any peer league.

Correct. Whether it was Louisville or Uconn, the ACC is still going to have the best academic average of all the conferences.

Except the majority of ACC members wanted nothing to do with UConn. Enjoy the Big East with most of the rest of other east coast programs stuck in the 90’s thinking basketball is all that matters.

2011: 164
2012: 160
2013: 161
2014: 161
2015: 168
2016: 171
2017: 165
2018: 171
2019: 192
2020: 176

As opposed to Clemson who thinks football is all that matters?

For an athletic conference these days, football is the most important thing. The ACC is an athletic conference.

But at least Louisville is better than West Virginia!

Louisville is tied with Washington State and is ranked ahead of Oklahoma State, Mississippi St, Texas Tech, and West Virginia.

Mean and median for each P5 conference:
ACC 54.0; 49.0
Big10 61.1; 60.5
Pac12 80.2; 97.0
SEC 111.6; 121.0
Big12 138.8; 128.5

And if the ACC had taken UConn instead of Louisville the mean would have been 46.5 (the median would still be 49). But hey, we got Pitino's scandals!

What do the incredibly dense people outside the ACC not get about about the fact that UConn might was well be ugly, fat, pregnant girl at the dance? Louisville might be the equivalent of the class bimbo that has made out with entire football team, but at least she is fun. At least Lou knows her place. At least Lou is not trying to manage the group. At least her daddy is not threatening to sue all the boys.
