RE: What does a spring season look like?
it's all about using the time now to build school based plans and procedures to control the virus. everything depends on that. in lieu of an unexpectedly fast and effective vaccine, we gotta live with the presence of the virus, but control the outbreaks. this requires a lot of cooperation, planning, and the ability to adjust. if the US can manage the virus as well as at least an average country, you can start to work in some sports. as long as the US is the worst in the world managing a pandemic ( I know Brazil and Mexico aren't much better) there is no way to play sports outside of a highly financed and restrictive bubble. let's get it together.

All I can say, FWIW, the MAC should sit back for a month and see what happens with the teams playing fall FB.
We know that the pros can manage Covid, but colleges are going to be something very different.
BTW, want to know a loser in the move to spring FB: The AAF. They were bought out of bankruptcy and presumably planned to play in 2021.
Now they would have to go up against the B1G and Pac12. Not good. P.S. it never made sense regardless. How can a fledgling league operate without fans?

Quote:MACtion: Sources tell FootballScoop leadership at multiple MAC programs are struggling to come to grips with what sources are describing as potentially debilitating financial issues for some athletic programs. As programs look to the Spring, some are wondering how that will be economically feasible. Significant cuts to programs are on being discussed. Stay tuned for more on this topic in the coming days.

RE: What does a spring season look like?
The B1G seems like a mess. So many players, parents, coaches, want to play and they aren't backing down. They know the risks, they see some other P5 conferences getting ready to play through.
In other news, there is a thinking among some who know this field, that the virus will burn itself out before a vaccine ever comes to the market. I've also read that the virus will always be around in some weaker form, but K-12 schools and colleges will begin to live with it and manage it like any other virus.

I disagree with this.
Yes, if someone is a bonafide 1st rounder they would probably sit. But players who "have a sniff of a chance" would sit out? No way. There are several MAC guys who came back for their senior year when they could have been an UDFA or late round pick.
I agree and injury could hinder a draft pick but unless it's something catastrophic, they will still get selected.

That maybe the case in the fall, but not playing spring football though with a combine and an NFL draft just weeks after the "spring" season ends. We already see students bailing out of P5 schools that are planning on a "spring" season.

Are there any rumors of playing 10 games during the fall as concerns with injuries that it may be a heavy load to play Spring and then Fall.

I would be in favor of:
1). 9 game Spring season - 1 OOC + 8 MAC games.
2). 10 game Fall season - 2 OOC + 8 MAC games.
So that's a total of 19 games vs. 12 + spring ball.
Sure that sounds like a lot, but those who are older may remember the USFL.
College players ended their college season say the 2nd week of November and began pro ball with training camps in Jan/Feb and play starting late Feb (if I remember correctly).
Those players would have a 11 game college season + USFL pro season within 9 months. I believe the USFL had a very long schedule. Longer than the NFL.

RE: What does a spring season look like?
I'm not all that optimistic about even a spring season after watching the partying going on here at CMU over the past 2 weeks or so. We started this week, early to get ahead of the "second wave." I think when numbers come out this week they will have to at least consider a move to on-line. Problem is all of the students that are here off campus will still have lots of time on their hands to gather. From all appearances, they are doing a great job on campus with masks but evenings are another thing all together.

- 30+ cases in the first week at UT
- Big Ten talking about early spring start for football in domed stadiums (Detroit, Indy, Minny, maybe Syracuse)

And each player gets another year of eligibility per the NCAA (just like what was done for baseball because of Covid).

why, unless they have good hepa filtration systems it makes way more sense to play outside from a health standpoint.

February in an open air stadium would tend to be a bit chilly in most of Big Ten country.

The USFL played an 18-game schedule. I don't recall hearing much about USFL preseason games, though.

I wonder if they would try to play say 'day /night doubleheaders?' Detroit, Indy and Minnie would equal 6 games, or 1 game short of a full schedule of conference games.

Hence "maybe Syracuse" for Penn State or Rutgers home games. One wonders why there wasn't mention of "maybe St. Louis", with the Dome at America's Center.

RE: What does a spring season look like?
Well, we are into the "Spring" season these past couple weeks for some FCS teams + New Mexico State.
Would've been interesting to peek at an alternate timeline where the MAC was playing now. And my guess is that we made a good move jumping in, albeit late, back in Fall. The best scenario would've been just to start in early September with the rest of the G5, but hindsight and all that...
And enjoyed our 2-0 bowl record.
COVID restrictions are still around, and judging by our basketball teams, players sitting out and postponements and cancellations would've still been likely in football. The weather has been awful these past couple weeks. And I don't think we would've "owned" TV viewership if #MACtion was playing now (bandied about as a possible advantage) - people just aren't that much into the college football mood right now.
For '21, a lot depends on the vaccine rollouts, (thundering?) herd immunity, and behavior of any variants ready to screw things up. But I figure all conferences will start on time barring another COVID gut-punch, with stadiums operating at limited capacity in the MAC, B1G, PAC, etc., and pretty much anything goes in SEC, CUSA, Sun Belt.
