Yes. There is no evidence that I have seen that indicates race had anything to do with it. Abuse of power by police officers is totally uncalled for, but stoking the fires of racism does not help.

And, I don't want this to be a political issue. It isn't. It is purely social. Our police MUST do better.

I think most posters would really appreciate it you kept your posts focused on athletics.

I see. So, I should be excluded from participating in discussions on this board?

Not that it matters, but I would like to say even though I said I hope this doesn’t turn into a political thread, (if the board rules allow it) I don’t mind these discussions happening and I am glad they are. I know that I’m contradicting myself but I don’t want it to seem like I don’t want these issues to be talked about because they absolutely should and need to be discussed. Personally, I will not offer any opinions on here because I like to keep it to JMU on this board personally, but I don’t fault anyone who participates. That’s my weak disclaimer and I’m taking the easy way out but keep expressing yourself to anyone who wants to. 07-coffee3

Thank you. I try to hold my tongue sometimes, but when I see something so divisive, so counterproductive as the statements by our leaders, stoking an already white-hot fire and then hear people applaud that, I just have to say something.

And, I think you are right. This should be discussed.

Just another thread. Same as the others. Same actors. Same stuff. Same lack of moderation on this board like normal. Rinse and repeat.

Yeah for what it's worth, I'd say I have a pretty similar outlook on it. I think it's great to discuss social and political issues with people you don't agree with, but I also don't really think it should be too frequent of a thing on a sports focused message board to the point where it's hard to enjoy discussing sports with each other.

As far as this specifically, I think Cig's statement is great and I'm really glad he didn't "all lives matter" it. This time really seems to have a lot more companies, public figures, etc. going with that type of statement which is great to see but it's also a little weird to me that none of the tons that came before George Floyd pushed people to that point. I guess maybe just a matter of how brutal and hard to watch this one was and especially to see police slowly kill another man as he yells out that he can't breathe after it already happened to Eric Garner.

If people weren’t out protesting in force, none of those companies would be putting out messages of support. It really isn’t about Floyd’s death specifically. It’s just a tipping point that honestly probably has a lot to do with the virus quarantine. Circumstances have all aligned, including people seeing angry “haircut protests” recently.

I think it is interesting to think about what conditions made this situation the rally point it has become.

Start with the long-standing institutional issues - a nationally consistent, starkly disproportionate police and criminal approach towards African-Americans and an unwillingness for our justice system to charge, convict, and sentence officers in brutality cases.

Add what we have that's specific to June 2020 - eight excruciating minutes, bystanders desperately pleading for it to stop, plural video sources, an official police account of the arrest that bears little resemblance to what actually occurred, 18 prior complaints on Chauvin, 6 prior complaints on Thao, the fact that this police brutality stemmed from the suspected use of a counterfeit $20 bill, a nation already strained with COVID, a district attorney who initially claimed there was “other evidence that does not support a criminal charge,” and current national leadership that have made it crystal clear they’re not only unwilling to engage in civil discourse, but have instead chosen to stoke the fires of unrest.

I would also add the Ahmaud Arbery murder in Brunswick, GA by the Father and his son. And you may have mentioned it earlier.

So, you agree with 04 that everyone else on this board should be able to discuss non-sports-related issues that are current and relevant except me. Is that about right? I should be censored while everyone else is free to discuss whatever topic comes up?

No not at all what I meant and was actually coming back to be clear and update my original comment.

This was not directed at any one poster, rather this entire commentary. It is not about whether I agree with you, someone else, or somewhere in the middle.....but it is my opinion that these topics need to stick to JMU athletics more on this message board.

If folks want to talk politics take it elsewhere is my take.

But if it is OK to talk that here, I have no issue with you stating your position and opinion and furthermore folks should not attack you for an opinion that does not align with their own echo chamber. You are entitled to your opinion and in fact have said nothing that should be construed as insulting nor out of bounds.....just a different opinion and point of view.

The same goes for folks that have varying opinions on Covid-19 as well. The science is evolving daily and really all over the place depending on where you look......last I looked the CDC and WHO were not in congruence on the topic. It is OK for folks to have different opinions and quite healthy in fact. It is great to generate discussion until the ridicule begins.

Sorry for the confusion in my original post.

07-coffee3

Yeah for what it's worth, I'd say I have a pretty similar outlook on it. I grew up in the 60's &70's in rural Pennsylvania. The first black person I ever met was the first student ever to go our HS. He knocked my front tooth out playing BB. (he ended up playing at Pitt) Back then the word "Racist" had a specific meaning, carried a lot of weight unlike today were the definition seems subjective and the word gets throw around similar to "ummm like....." when someone struggles to find the right word to use.

The 80's, 90's and 2000's I saw humanity evolve into a more tolerant, adjective society. It seems to me the past 15 or so years we've become MUCH more racially, socially and politically divided than I can ever remember. I don't know why. It's like the harder we ALL try with mutual respect, the more divided we become.

I understand and respect what Cig was trying to say but like most of us, he worked too hard to be socially correct to the point of being awkward. We are all wounded, we could all use some trust and respect.
