RE: OT: COVID Check-In
Decided to do carry out tonight, Chipotle (or chipoltey for you Tubsy fans). It was pick up, walk in find your order on the shelf, walk out. The line to place an in store order was almost out the door, people standing two feet apart at most. I was the only person in a mask and I was just passing through briefly. I received a couple dirty looks, ironically one from an old fat guy.

I'm still going in to work, have been this whole time. Loads of extra hours... huzzah for being salaried. I wear a mask there as well when in close contact with others. Some mocking comments from some higher ups, also fat old guys. Precautionary measures were "coming soon" until we finally had a few confirmed cases. Then suddenly it was "better implement half cocked measures so the peons think we give a sh!t". Its still a joke to the higher ups, with their back entrances and isolated offices.

I wear glasses also, so wearing a mask has been irritating at times. Hard to keep my lenses from fogging up. But the mask isn't for me, and I actually do give a sh!t about my guys, so I'll gladly keep wearing it (as well as whenever I have to venture out, which I have gladly kept to a bare minimum). My mom, who has been making cloth masks for nurses at hospitals and nursing homes, made me a whole bunch so I can have a clean one each day.

The wife has been working from home. As a high school SLP, it's been tough, trying to reach out to her kids and keeping them on track as best she can. Basically relearning how to do her job, since doing it from a distance wasnt ever really a thing.

Been gardening a bit. Also, I've been running more.

These are difficult times. Times that can be confusing for reasonable people who find themselves in the middle.

I have seen the same issues carried out on this board as what I see on Facebook, and out and about in stores.

You have one side that are breaking their arms patting themselves on the back for being so much more intelligent than others in regards to quarantining, wearing masks, giving up rights, etc. The far majority of these types come across as holier than thou and condescending. They come from a position of good intentions, but use it to put down others, and to portray themselves as better and smarter than others. They have a need to portray this issue in terms of them being superior to others, just as they do for most issues. They are entirely unlikable and insufferable blowhards who do more harm than good to the side they claim to be on. In reality it is just another opportunity for them to preen about how superior they (think) they are, and how stupid and lacking in culture they think those who oppose their views are.

Then you have another side who takes advantage of negative aspects of quarantine, mainly government over reach, to justify not practicing common sense things to slow the spread and protect the more vulnerable. This side holds on to legitimate overreach, and examples of failed statistics, as excuses to wallow in ignorance. These types are proud of practicing ignorance in general because of one specific legitimate issue that they can point to that they think justifies everything else.
They are proud to not wear masks in public, and to not practice social distancing. They wear it as a badge of honor.

So what are the reasonable people to do? The ones who are rightly concerned about Covid-19, concerned about their vulnerable loved ones, who wear masks in public and keep social distancing.
But also know that the longer this goes on, the more real the economic devastation is going to be, the more lives that will be lost due to it.

Who also know that it is not scientific to treat everyone as having the same risk.

Who know that the risks for the majority of Americans has been overblown, and that the goal posts of quarantine have been moved.

Who also know that there are politicians out there taking advantage of the situation to implement their extreme positions, and to restrict freedoms in ways that do not have any impact on Covid-19.

Who know that, especially in this year of a presidential election, many politicians are willing to use the public as pawns to affect the outcome of the election.

Difficult and confusing times indeed....

I am still amazed by the # of old people (overweight, grey hair) wobbling into the supermarket without masks. Generally, it seems like younger people are more inclined to wear masks. (I sat in the parking lot, waiting for them to bring my order out.)

Our county is not a hot spot (unlike Franklin or Hamilton County), but I personally know of deaths of otherwise healthy people living within a mile of me due to this disease. It's real, but some people just refuse to acknowledge it.

At 52 my hair is graying and a bit thinner but still has a good scalp coverage ratio. This weekend I hand over the electric trimmers to my wife for my first COVID cut. It should be a glorious experience gents...pass the Woodford Reserve.

Yep. My COVID cut pretty much turned out just like this. My dear wife did a great job. Onward and upward to hair growth!

These people have been through difficulties before. The went through the 1968 flu which killed over 100,000 people (when they were only 200 million in the country unlike the 300+ million now). They went thru the polio virus, the swine flu, etc. Not to mention WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and real economic downturns. They never panicked, nor expected the government to take care of them or tell them what to do (whether that was the right decision depends on your point of view).

I imagine they shake their head in wonder at the reactions of those facing the first real adversity in their lives, in their opinion. They were raised to take care of themselves. Younger people today seem to believe more in having the state take care of them.

I'm not choosing sides here but the current situation is a matter of perspective and life experience. As just one example, I don't know anyone [yet] that has either died from or has been diagnosed with COVID-19. I do, however, know countless others that have been diagnosed with cancer or have died from it. That includes my mom [two time cancer survivor] and my wife who just recently recovered from Stage 2 cervical cancer. FWIW, it's estimated that every sixth death in the world is the result of cancer - making it the second leading cause of death. Let that sink in.

RE: OT: COVID Check-In
A 42 year old, healthy fit coworker of mine with no-compromising health issues is still struggling to recover from Covid-19. It has taken her down for what is going on 4 weeks.
So while it seems like the worst of it is for older folks and those with immunity, heart or lung issues...it does seem to pretty randomly affect some people with unexpected severity.
My coworker will survive it in (all likelihood) but have to wodner how long it is going to take her to fully recover...

for everyone else while the precautions and isolation are a PIA don't just assume by your age or health that you won't be affected severely.

RE: OT: COVID Check-In
So far my wife and I are unaffected by Covid.

However, both of us have needed medical procedures postponed because of the Governor’s orders. My immunosuppressant infusion was postponed long enough such that I can’t have any treatments for three months and must start the entire process over. Coming off of the meds is worse than starting them.

My wife had a back ablation postponed. It will be rescheduled but, in the meantime, she is in tremendous pain.

Dewine’s overreaction has been a disaster for us. Excuse my language but our state government can go phuck themselves.

Governor Dewine's thoroughly appropriate reaction has no doubt saved thousands from the ravages of this virus. Sorry to hear that you and your wife have suffered as a result.

Notice that all the people who want the shutdown to go endlessly have not missed a single paycheck.

Not a single one of them leading by example.

HasDr Acton misseda paycheck? Has De wine?

His initial reaction was more or less correct. However, after the data showed that first assumptions were wrong, he stuck to his guns. He would rather see people suffer physically and economically than admit that he needed to change the plan.

BTW, I am not an attorney so my legal knowledge is meager to say the least. Which part of the Ohio Constitution grants the Governor or his appointees the authority to determine which medical procedures can be performed and which ones cannot?

QSec, he doesn't have that power. Dr. Acton does have that power, however, and she made the order.

Thanks. I am aware that she made the order. Does it pass constitutional muster?

I'm no lawyer, but it seems she does as the director of health for the state.
