I very much hope they all come, but I wouldn’t understand taking that risk of not being able to compete in the NCAA tournament due to sanctions.

I think fans glorify NCAA and March Madness more than top tier recruits. For a top 10 recruit with aspirations of playing in NBA, I would think they worry more about being NBA ready. A chance to advance your game and approach to preparing for games with Penny and Mike Miller would be HUGE. The network they instantly create around you would be huge. Playing for a title is awesome, but the kids with (realistic, achievable) dreams of being a star in the NBA have different goals than we realize (I think). I think we're more attractive to recruits than we even realize.

Grizzlies help too. The arena. The young, exciting team who's open to engaging with younger players and fans.

I don't think you're wrong. I just think we, as fans, are viewing from a different perspective. Did James Wiseman kill his college career here at Memphis? Yes. Did James Wiseman advance his game here at Memphis? Yes. Not a total loss for JW.

So Arizona, LSU and Auburn can land top players while having coaches being recorded on tape cheating but Memphis cant land players because we did what?

I think the recruits see the truth: that places such as Arizona, LSU and Auburn are not likely to receive more than a slap on the wrist. It's been that way all of these kids' lives.

In all seriousness these kids are definitely not plugged in 1/10th the way you are as far as historical punishments within the NCAA.

That's probably true.
But the people whispering in their ears might be.

I'm not saying they are. I am saying it appears they're being treated as one by the NCAA. Do you suppose we'd have heard from the NCAA before now if it had been OUR coach on tape making strong a$$ offers?

I have no doubt, and our player (Javonte Smart) would have been ruled likely ineligible.

The NCAA is so hypocritical

This is it. Fans think the NCAA is the pinnacle. And it is, as far as team goals go.

But top players don't see it this way. Sure they'd rather go as not go. So it is PART of the priority list for making a choice. But it's not THE top priority. NBA prep is (development, visibility, showcasing skills).

If the NCAA tourney was what these guys came to college for, Wiseman wouldn't have quit the team.

It’s hard to throw Auburn into a protected class of schools when they have historically been one of the most penalized schools in college sports.

I presume either/both would have to sit out a season since they're not grad transfers?

Not compared to what they have done. A habitual thief tends to get caught occasionally.

Look at how many times our basketball, and even our football, program has been hammered. And what is our list of offenses????

Double dipping on some pell grants, probably someone took a test for somebody, a player had an inappropriate job in the summer, and now a coach who wasn't our coach gave a player's mother some money who wasn't our player a few years ago.

Compare that to...

20 years of fake classes, prostitutes hired by coaches on campus, father shopping qb son who gets a national championship, not to mention Arizona, OK State, Auburn, LSU are all on tape admitting to "buying" players. Kentucky, Kansas and more are also cited in the FBI reports. Crickets. No one suspended. So far nothing has happened. For those schools its play on while we investigate while they deny any wrong doing.

We report what seems to possibly be a potential issue dating back several years and we get our season ripped away.We get screwed over and over again.
