That’s true for Mick, Brannen, and every other coach. If Mick or Brannen can’t make noise in the tournament after 3 - 5 years they should be fired.
From the floor 2009-10 season to the 2014-15 season Villanova made the tournament 5 of 6 years. In those years they lost in the round ing 64 3 times and round of 32 twice (as a 2 seed then a 1 seed). I'm betting nova fans are happy they stuck with jay Wright.
He made the S16 in year 4 and E8 in year 5.
And then he became a "bad" coach who couldn't win "the big ones" for 6 years before going back to being a "good" coach who "knows how to win in March"? How does that work exactly?
Or is it possible some people simply overreact and jump to conclusions based upon info that is often generic and cherry-picked from fairly small sample sizes?
No, he had already proved himself and he continued to do so. No one wins all the time. No one expects that. But 1 S16 in a decade and a half is an abject failure.
So why was he so "bad" during that 6 year period?

Never said he was. Ups and downs happen. What you don’t want is 1 good year out of 16.

OK, so I'm asking directly: You don't think losing "in the round of 64 3 times and round of 32 twice (as a 2 seed then a 1 seed)" over six years is a bad track record? Is that acceptable to you? Is that the mark of a good coach?

You’re up sometimes and down other times. You just don’t want to be down 15 out of 16 years.

If someone never liked him, nothing says they needed to then or now. What is weird is how guys who gushed over Mick and his teams in the good times suddenly change their tune to all piss and vinegar.
Main purpose of commenting on this thread was the turnaround they have had the past 2 months. Would be notable if Mick had not coached here. Teams like Texas and Virginia have had different yet likewise notable resurgences down the stretch this season, IMO.
As others have stated, no ill will against the man. He has a right to his own pursuit of happiness. He has a daughter and I hope he makes her proud.
With that said, his time here was mediocre, and I hope in 10 years we can look back at his era as mediocre. I thinn he lowered the bar for this program, and am excited to see if we can get back and raise expectations.
rumor has it that he just literally loves Rep. Nancy Pelosi......ughhhh...hard to root for someone that stupid in how we run this nation. He better not use her examples in running a bb team out there or Schiff will have him fired or impeached.
I have also heard Cronin is a big lefty lib as well. None of my business, but hope he enjoys the nice Cali income taxes out there basically making his old salary despite being tripled.

Actually I did. You just don’t like the answers, which is why you keep editing them when you quote them.
I look at how a coach starts his tenure. Is he progressing towards success? If not, fire him. Mick progressed really well. Then you start to look long term. Is there ongoing success combined with normal ups & downs, or is there stagnation or back sliding? That’s where Mick utterly and completely failed in the only relevant measure: the tournament. So he had to go. 15/16 years without success is not good.

Mick did a good job while he was here.
He also left of his own accord; he was not "fired" nor was he "forced out." He left UC, not the other way around.
I can live with him doing well at UCLA. I am not especially following UCLA, I'm not rooting for them... but neither am I rooting for them to lose nor am I rooting against Mick having success there.
Good for him that his team seems to have turned a corner. Beyond that... Meh. I'm more interested in the Bearcats and John Brannen succeeding. I am a Bearcat fan, not a Bruin fan, not a "Mick Cronin" fan. I have watched Coaches come and go. Most I have liked, some I have hated. But in the end, I root for the Bearcats, not the person sitting in the Coach's office. (It is more fun, however, when I happen to like the person sitting in the Coach's Office and can root for them as well...)
Why so many people are so wrapped up in this topic is beyond me.
If Mick gets the Bruins into the tournament, good for him (as long as their bid is not at UC's expense).

Vague time frames and criteria are not actual answers to the specific situations I asked about. But clearly that's the only response you will give so that's about as far as we can take this conversation.
(Editing comments on both sides in later posts was just to simplify and clarify. My specific questions and your non-committal responses are still easily read in the thread.)

If Mick gets the Bruins into the tournament, good for him (as long as their bid is not at UC's expense).
There are four types of people ROB:
1) Those that hated Mick since the beginning
2) Those that worship the ground he walks on
3) Those that thought he did a nice job, but it was time for him to move on.
4) If he stays- fine; if not- we are UC and will be fine as well.
The first two are the two extremes, and drive most of the passion in these threads.
