Its women's basketball at a mid major school that does not care about athletics beyond rowing and squash. Of course it is always poor. JMU is an unusual draw for women's basketball and mid major women's basketball as a whole. College towns will always have the ability to draw better for athletics than will a major city school. JMU is the choice for sports in Harrisonburg. Drexel anything is choice #25. Winning is not the only thing that creates draws. Weekends draw slightly better than week day games too.

Sean said in the post-game that Jackie had been sick all day and he was not sure she would even be able to play. She proved him wrong in a big way! I hope she can rest a bit today and be ready to go tomorrow.
Judging by the substitution patterns, minutes per game and observing the players, it appears that we have a few that are not 100% healthy. It's a grind having so many games at the end of the season and especially during the tournament, in a short period of time, players are worn and sore with those chinks and dents. Our subs will need to step up and provide quality minutes since a couple of starters are only good for 25 minutes a game if that.

You're absolutely right. Many here are just so used to WBB they don't realize how good we have it. Most women's BB teams in the country have very low draws. We are not the norm, but the exception.

Too close for comfort. Always look to the lessons learned from Ws as well as Ls, but a loss at Elon is the kind of late season flop the women have suffered before under Coach O. Hopefully the women got it out of their system and will not play a similar game in the CAAT.

Kenny had a 3 point win and a 1 point win late in the season against Elon when he was here. We tend to discount the lower teams as not being capable, yet last night Drexel had a 2 point win, JMU had a 3 point win, and W&M had a 4 point win. Most of the lower teams have had many close losses throughout the season and are more than capable of getting a late season win. W&M is 21-7 this year. Saturday's game will definitely be a challenge. I feel that Eva Hodgson is the best complete player in the league. She had 27 last night. We will have to bring our A game +. Ironically the last time we lost at W&M, Kenny was our coach.

Missouri State, another mid-major I follow, gets good attendance. A lot of teams in the MVC do. Most of the SEC does, but of course they're P5 schools, so there's that. Maybe dan10 should look a little harder.
I was appalled at the game Drexel played last night and wondered why we couldn't beat them the first time we played them. Maybe the no-crowd sucked all the energy out of the building or something. Last night they couldn't seem to get out of their own way. They looked like a high school team. But so did UNCW.

What do you consider good attendance? 5k? 3k? 2k? 1k? I set a challenge for you on our board because I think you would be very surprised at attendances for women's basketball across the country. Pick a benchmark you consider good attendance then take a guess out of the 351 women's programs how many meet that benchmark. Don't look it is up, either.

Also for the first game against you we had a listed attendance of 768. So try again on the lack of people sucking the life out of the game.

Dan, I get you. There aren't many programs out there not named JMU or Tennessee that have 4-figure attendance at their women's basketball programs on a Thursday night.

It’s not just women’s basketball. For the last 40 years JMU students and fans have shown they will support a good program.

You certainly have the benefit of really being a college town, where JMU is your sporting attraction. So naturally a winning program will gain you extra butts more easily. That is not a knock on JMU or others in similar circumstances. Certainly you use that to your benefit, especially for recruiting to stay strong.
I am waiting to heat what OTP considers a good attendance for women's basketball so we can play this little game. I think they will be surprised. Or maybe not.

768 is below average for D1 WBB, and a tad bit below average in the CAA. JMU draws more like a high G5/AAC team.
2018-19 stats (don't see anything newer): http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/w_basketba...ndance.pdf
NCAA Div 1 WBB average: 1,583 per home game
SEC : 4,277
ACC : 3,144
AAC : 2,161
CAA : 940
JMU average: 2,121
Drexel average: 847

Keep in mind the AAC number is inflated because of UConn, but yeah the point remains valid.

We would probably be an "average" or slightly above avg AAC team even without UConn.
Our numbers are close to #49 UCF (2,641) but not quite at Duke (3,883) or UVA (3,334) type average draw yet. The SEC is another thing altogether. In Virginia, we do draw better than VT (1,608) and VCU (990). Edged out by ODU (2,312).

1-2K for a decent mid, a MINIMUM of 3k+ for a good P5, and WAY pover that for a REALLY good program like Tennessee or South Carolina. I realize some of those estimates depend on the arena (Gampel is absolutely, ridiculously HORRID) but I do know what the SEC averages. (I also know what the Syracuse attendance looks like, even when they're winning, and it's disgraceful.)
And you haven't explained why your team played like a bunch of high-schoolers the past 2 games, either. They were sad.

I'm not sure how you can say that Drexel played like high schoolers the past two games. Drexel won both of those games. They beat the defending CAA Champions on the road, and then won again last night. Anybody who knows anything about basketball wouldn't call those games high school performances. Drexel is not built to win games pretty, but they are an experienced team that finds ways to win. Their shooting wasn't good last night, but they played incredible defense to still pull out a win while almost every other college team would have lost with that type of shooting performance.
Most of the fans on these boards are very respectful of other programs and their fans, especially when they venture to another school's message board. I'm not sure what caused you to be so bitter as to troll Drexel's boards with such rudeness.

JMU average: 2,121
Drexel average: 847
Now, let's take a look at the city of Philadelphia, and where Drexel compares. As somebody who's lived her my entire life, I can honestly say that people do not really care about women's basketball. I'm sure it's the same in other major metropolitan cities with multiple major professional sports teams.
2018-19 WBB attendance in Philadelphia
Temple 1,471 (Includes UConn game)
Penn 1,047
Drexel 847
Villanova 793
St. Joseph's 752
La Salle 460
So these numbers suggests that Drexel actually draws rather well for women's basketball considering the market that they play in.
While Drexel may draw a bit below the national average, note that the average includes many teams in huge WCBB markets in college towns. It's apples to oranges to even try to compare Drexel to JMU or Tennesse or any other major or mid major program in a small college town.

I was actually trying to get info out of OTP before giving them the answers, but thank you. Their point of 1-2K for a decent mid is still ironic because JMU just barely clears that threshold. And yes we are well aware Drexel is below average, that was not being argued.
And for OTP: 42 teams in all of D1 average over 3K per game.
USF (3,087)
Montana (3,180)
Toledo (3,728)
Drake (3,788)
MTSU (4,353)
New Mexico (5,236)
Gonzaga (5,625)
UConn (8,870)
These are all of the not power conference teams in those 42 schools. This is only if you include the AAC as a non power conference. That is 2.3% of all teams. If you remove the AAC it is 1.7% of all schools.
Tennessee (8.028)
Missouri State (2,333)
JMU (2,121)
Your list of 3 schools are definitely more outliers than what is "normal". So yes be happy you have supported high performing women's programs. But don't act like that is normal.
