Rice @ Texas State 2/26
The dirty birds are headed up to San Marcos today to play the Bobcats.
I believe that Brandon Deskins will be getting the start for us. I am also hearing that Braden Comeaux is injured and "will not be playing for an extended period of time."
Very unfortunate news and another blow to the team.

Losing Comeaux sucks, good bat and even better glove. Leaves a hole in the lineup and 3B but hopefully someone steps up.
Deskins has pitched well in limited work so it makes sense. Get us back on track buddy.

Yikes - Comeaux has 10 out of 39 total team hits so far this season. The rest of the team is hitting a combined 0.170.

Bulman moves to 3B (his natural position) and Combs moves to 1B. Comeaux is our most consistent hitter.

Ouch! Owls’ offense has been as cold as that game will be tonight. Currently 51 and forecast to be down to 41 by 10 pm. And that doesn’t include the stiff north wind.

Yet even with the stiff wind, Tx State takes the lead on a HR in the first inning. Rice down 1-2-3, as usual.

A touch of optimism would really do this place some good.

Floodgates opening. Opening walk in bottom of 3rd, followed by bunt hit, WP and single. Now 3-0. Still no hits for the Owls through 3. Now another WP. Still no outs. After getting an out, we have a walk followed by a squeeze bunt that gets thrown away for an error. Now 4-0. Men on 2b and 3B with only one out. Bordwine now in.

Is it time to start a pool on which team has the longest losing streak in 2020, Baseball Owls or Football Owls?

Only one hard hit ball (Bulman single) through 4 innings, with 5 strikeouts, against a midweek pitcher. Conversely, Tx State has hit 4 - 5 laser shot outs, to go along with their 3 singles and solo HR. Oh, and 4 BBs, 1 Rice error (Deskin) and 1 WP.

Yeah, it was a fabulous move to push the OG out the way they did. Things have gone swimmingly (oops, better not jinx the pool team.)

Top of the 5th, Duluc HBP, Collins walked, Beaulaurier RBI ground single.
New pitcher to face Cruz with no outs. Geez, Tre strikes out looking for the second time tonight. What is with him this year? Then Edwards strikes out on 4 pitches. Keep in mind, the new pitcher had come in with 2 strikeouts in 5.1 iP so far this year. Unbelievable

Then Edwards strikes out and Buhlman grounds out. That’s 7 strikeouts through 5 innings. Against midweek TX St pitching

Nobody thinks the treatment of Wayne was more shameful than I do. But I'm not sure he could have been a whole lot better. We just don't have the players we used to. It will be up to Bragga to bring them in. The Rice Endowment should help, but it will take more than that to get us back to Omaha.
I stil think Wayne should have been allowed to leave on his own terms, and should have been able to pick his successor, and should have gotten some sort of coach emeritus fundraising and alumni relations post after hanging them up. That's way out of line with normal practice, but this was no normal situation. Wayne is the reason Rice has D-1 athletics today, although the powers that be may be trying to change that. Again, how do you fire a guy who is the reason why you have a job?

After a lead off walk, Rickett now in to pitch...who then walks the first guy he faces. Two on and nobody out. That’s our seventh walk issued...in not even five innings. Rickett then gives up a single. Now 5-1, 2 on and nobody out. Now Rickett plunks the hitter to load the bases. Still nobody out. After a couple of outs, and another run, Ricketts issues Rice’s 8th walk of the night to make it 7-1. Bases still loaded.. A fly out mercifully ends the inning. Now 7-1 going to the top of th 6th.

Can someone tell me why Bragga keeps going back to Rickett? The guy is human kerosine. He's yet to have an even semi-respectable outing. Today he comes in with one on, no outs....walk, RBI single, HBP, force out, deep SF, single, single, walk, fly out. It's now 7-1. Our pitchers have given up 6 hits, 8 BBs, I HBP and 1 WP in 5 innings, and numerous long outs.

My goodness give the kid a break. Not a single guy goes out there intending to fail.
Yes we have fallen from glory and it’s frustrating as hell but there is no reason to routinely criticize these kids when you could not do one iota better on your best day today, tomorrow, or any day.
