Rice-UCI baseball game 2
No thread yet but why not start one I suppose. Hopefully it will cheer me up from the basketball debacle.
No score in the 3rd. Brogdon on the mound for Rice. The Owls have made a couple of changes in the hitting lineup, including Justin Dunlap getting his first start of the year I believe (LF).

RE: Rice-UCI baseball game 2
UCI scores first in the bottom of the 4th to take a 1-0 lead. Rice still without a hit after being no-hit last night by the UCI starter for 7 innings. Van Loon is the UCI starter, and Loon would also describe the feeling of being a Rice fan tonight. Sigh.

Cruz makes a fabulous play deep in the hole at short to save a run and end B4. Love to hear the announcer excited when Rice (finally!) does something good.
Now get some hits and runs!!
1-0, UCI ... after 4.

Mounting a rally without any hits. Leadoff walk, and then a HBP, and then a wild pitch moves both runners up. 2nd and 3rd, no outs.

Well we squeeze out a tying run, but still no hits. And UCI replaces their starter for the 2nd straight night despite them not having allowed any hits. Early season pitch counts I guess.
1-1, B5.

1-out single for Bulman in the 6th is Rice's 1st hit. 1-1 still. Brogdon with a solid 5 innings. His pitch count is fairly high (86) so he might not come out for the 6th (or possibly he might have 1 inning left).

Not counting Benitez and his 1 at bat last night, we have no one hitting over .278. And 5 total extra base hits as a team in 5 games. I realize our talent is subpar, but this is pretty ridiculous. I don’t know what the hell Bragga is teaching offensively, but it sure isn’t working so far.

Brogdon does start the 6th and promptly gives up 2 hits and a run. Cienfuegos comes in and prevents any further damage. 2-1 UCI heading to the 7th.

Back-to-back solid outings by Brogdon. That's certainly a pleasant surprise. The offense right now is downright offensive.

Edwards’ golden sombrero strands the leadoff runner in T7.
Futility.

RE: Rice-UCI baseball game 2
T7:
Combs HBP.
Then two Ks (Dunlap/6 pitches & Beaulaurier/3 pitches).
On a 1-2 pitch, Comeaux doubles Combs to 3rd!!
"Cade Edwards, who's struck out three times in this game, has a chance to be a hero."
Edwards fell behind 1-2, but he worked the count, fouling off six pitches!
("This is one expensive at bat for the UC-Irvine equipment folks.")
Then ... with the count still 2-2 ...
Cade swings, "one more time, and he comes up empty! A heck of an at-bat, but the Owls are unable to come up with the tying run."
Arrrgh!
2-1, UCI ... heading to B7.

Futility.
Too bad Combs was the lead baserunner on Cameaux's 2-out double. Runner at the crack of the bat, just about anyone else (save for LaRue) would have likely scored on that hit.

11 strikeouts through 7 innings. We're being way, way too passive up there. Taking strikes down broadway on obvious hitters counts (e.g., 2-0), and very rarely swinging at first pitch fastballs.

T9:
With 2 out, Comeaux singles. And Edwards gets a single, too!! Comeaux to 3rd.
The game's on the line ... and we have Trei Cruz up. He works the count to 3-2 ... "Hit in the air right side ... He's going to get over there ... sliding ... It's going to bounce off the glove of Kaspar!" He's down injured.
Still a 3-2 count ... but Cruz has to wait while Kasper gets treatment.
"It looks like he's OK. He gets to his feet." But he's coming out.

T9, cont'd:
Church in for UCI in right.
3-2 count to Cruz ... "who's 0-3 today, with a walk."
"Checked his swing ... Did he go around? Yes he did! And that's the ball game."
Arrrrgh!!
UCI wins, 2-1

Pathetic day for Rice sports. Gotta put JK on the hot seat by now right? Or is Leebron too worried about tweeting our pictures of his shampoo travel bottles.

Actually, our track and field teams did well. Plus, a shorthanded women's basketball team won.
