RE: Sorolla Gone
I thought he was pretty skilled underneath. He obviously had limitations, but he was better than I expected. When we signed him, maybe he thought he'd be getting significant minutes, but then things changed when Vogt got the waiver. Sorry to see him go, but hope he makes some money in Europe.

His Bio says UC 20'. It's possible he still finishes a degree, depending on where his academics stand.

I believe his dad died before the season (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Can't blame him for going home. As for those who think he's quitting on the team or taking the easy way out or whatever...he doesn't really have to explain it to anyone. Nick Bosa 'quit' on OSU and just played in the Super Bowl. Jalen Hurts 'quit' on Bama and made the playoffs. Is Jay gonna find success like that, too? No. But I hope he goes and finds a niche in Europe. He doesnt owe us anything.

Sorrola was very solid in a 10-15 minute role. Vogt needs a breather, and Sorrola has a 6-8 ft turnaround shot that neither Vogt or Diarra have. I just don't understand, unless it is some family issue, why you wouldn't want to finish the year strong with your team, with a chance to win a conference championship and play in the NCAA tournament, which is one of the biggest stages in the world.

Maybe he an offer to get paid. Money talks no matter where you are from and where you are going.

Can't blame him. Probably make a couple hundred grand at least. He's a part time guy with bad wheels. He's had foot, ankle et. al. MD will get the minutes and the bites. Likely see more small lineups which seemed to work well against Houston defensively. ZH likely to see more minutes regardless of this as well.

Brannen was using Sorolla to relieve Vogt and Diarra to relieve Scott. As others suggested, Davenport may now see the court.

RE: Sorolla Gone
Looking at stats of his former 7 ft teammate at Valpo Derrik Smits who transferred to Bulter....Smits this year 11 minutes per game 3.8 pts per game......Sorolla 11 minutes per game 3.3 pts a game.

First glance it would seem that Jay could help against a team like Wichita with their depth in big men. But remembering how Temple beat them with extreme pressure on their guards; going small at times might be effective for us.

Wow. Hate to hear this news.

I mean, the guy wasn't a stiff by any stretch and if he had to make his move now i understand. But jeesh, its February. It's just getting to the good part.

Against Houston Diarra relieved Vogt in the second half and it's not the first time Diarra has played over Sorolla as Vogt's backup. Brannen has been using Diarra as Scott's backup and interchanging Diarra/Sorolla as Vogt's backup. Diarra has been getting more minutes as Vogt's backup though lately, because Diarra is clearly better than Sorolla.

I think this is a good option. Gives a different dynamic.

Davenport is probably not ready to play significant minutes at the 4. He will because there are few options. Not a great development in February.

Not sure Sorolla was playing significant minutes at this point.

Whatever minutes he was getting, there is a pretty good reason he was getting them and Davenport wasn’t. One of which is they play different positions. Having Davenport take his minutes in this system would be like having Scott play the 2 guard.

RE: Sorolla Gone
This is definitely a blow to our frontcourt depth, Sorolla wasn't a worldbeater by any means but he was effective enough in his role. Diara is going to need to step up and play a lot more quality minutes. I wish Sorolla the best, but I'm really disappointed that he is leaving the team so far into the season. I'm guessing that he was offered a Euro contract to play this season and took it.

I guess I look at it, like he's got between 6-8 weeks left. That is nothing. Seems crazy to me, what if UC made a sweet 16 or elite 8 run, and he misses that for some minor league euro leageu play in front of 1000 people in Czechoslovakia for 50K. When you are 40-50 years old, what would be more memorable looking back on. But there is alot stuff I don't get. Oh well, his life.

These are young men trying to figure out their future. If this is what's best for Jay then good for him. Wish him the best. Selfishly, this hurts our depth no question - only so many 7 foot, 250 pound dudes that play college basketball.

As a grad transfer he’s only here for 8 months or so ..it’s not like he’s going to be wearing a raccoon skin coat waving a pennant singing the UC fight song decades from now...these are rent a players and it goes both ways. He got a better offer or something came up that he figures is a more important use of his time than playing a game as a backup when he might not give a rat’s butt about a masters degree.

Not trying to start an argument. Sorolla is gone, so it doesn't really matter. But to me, it looks like coach has been playing match-up's and scenarios rather than making any statements about which player is better. I will remind you that Sorolla went in at the end of the game vs Houston (after Vogt fouled out) instead of Diarra.

Good luck to him.

If I backed out in the middle of semester, as a student, wouldn't I be on the hook for the tuition? If so, shouldn't he on the hook too? Or am I way off? I'm just looking at the trend of players bailing mid school year.

He should, but I doubt any program wants the reputation of being that cheap with the players.

Seems dumb unless a pay day contract. Good luck, but let us face it this grad transfer deal is pretty bogus. He was a hired gun who could not shoot straight.
