Temple Basketball
Was John Chaney such a great coach that no one can come close at Temple? I'm embarrassed for the inconsistency that Temple has shown this, and several of the previous seasons.

The question for those closer to what's happening, are injuries, coaching, or something else the reason for Temple's inconsistency from game to game? Something has to improve and soon. I never thought I'd see the day where both Penn and Penn State are better in basketball than Temple.

John Chaney was a great coach. Yea.

Doesn't mean nobody can do it but means Chaney level success probably isn't the normal expectation.

Take a deep breath.
Let it out slowly.
We have a new coach who is trying to implement a new style of play. On the Temple board it was pointed out that Jay Wright was basically .500 his first 3 years. We all need patience and perspective.

The team's morale and chemistry - particularly of the bench players - seem to have collapsed during the past three weeks, after the team's good start in conference play.

Temple won 9 OOC games and earned a NET ranking in the mid-40s by running a deep rotation to help offset the loss of Shizz Alston and the team's starting Center in 2018-19. Not every bench player performed well in every game, but in most cases, there were at least 2 or 3 bench guys who played well enough to help the team win games.

That changed toward the end of OOC play, in large part, because the team was depleted by injuries to seven Temple players.
Nate Pierre-Louis, one of the team's top two starters, suffered a severely scratched cornea that forced him to wear protective goggles and had a very adverse impact on his performances.

The team's only true Center (D Moore) has been severely hampered by injuries that have put him out of action for much of the season, and another player (Dunn) had a severe foot injury and may end up meeting the entire season with a medical red shirt.

The Owls lost some heart-breaking games due to the multiplicity of injuries, and it has had an adverse affect on morale and chemistry. They played poorly on the road. They mounted a heroic effort vs Houston, Wichita, and Cincy, but narrowly lost 2 of those 3 games, with their top bench player missing the Cincy game. Those two losses probably put them out of contention - not only for the NCAA, but quite possibly for the NIT as well.

The team has definitely hit bottom, and it's possible that all they're really playing for now is pride and the hope to end the season with a winning record.

This is a critical time in the early HC career of Coach McKie. He has to recruit 6 players (5 for the 2021 class) in the coming months, and every additional loss going forward will make it that much harder for him to recruit a talented group of players for his third season as Head Coach.

He's faced with a formidable challenge.

I want Temple to fare well in AAC play. The Owls are an anchor to the AAC and have an outstanding tradition. But this is not good (nor for Memphis, which I support and hate to see the possible late-season collapse).

RE: Temple Basketball
It has been reported on a Temple message board that Temple's HC stated that he has been speaking with former HC Fran Dunphy after each game.

Unfortunately, given the way the team struggled under Dunphy's leadership, this may be an example of the blind leading the blind.

Not sure that Dunphy is the guy to be seeking guidance from. By following Dunphy's example, the team's trajectory this season is practically identical to the trajectories of the Dunphy teams in preceding seasons.

It may be time for Coach McKie to seek advice from other former mentors, and to consider bringing aboard another assistant coach who can help him to get things on track. Otherwise, his tenure as Temple's HC may be shorter than had been expected.

RE: Temple Basketball
Chaney is one of the all-time greats... which means that he will forever be hard to replace. I should add that he is also one of my favorite coaches of all time, so of course I’m biased.

Of note (and correct me if I’m wrong), Chaney ran a clean program and his practice schedules (“The Breakfast Club”) were designed to keep players out of trouble, disciplined and tough. It’s Philly, for goodness sake... we expect y’all to be tough.

Give McKie time. Temple has not been “Temple” for years now and it will take time to reimplement the culture that Chaney produced. Being that I was also a fan of his, I’m hoping that he will be able to pull it off.

RE: Temple Basketball
I'm not sure what Temple's ceiling is as a program. The reality is we haven't made the Sweet 16 in 19 years, we haven't been ranked in 8 iirc. I'm pretty sure last time we cracked the Top 10 was 2000 following the win over #1 Cincinnati. Temple's had several really good college level players the last 15 or so years but no one who's come close to being that true game/program changer. I get that it's McKie's first season but he's also not your typical first year HC since he was literally groomed for this. Our play for the most part the last 6 or so weeks has been unacceptable. We look lost and unprepared more than I can recall since I've been following Temple athletics. I was by no means upset went Dunphy announced he would be stepping aside. With that said, I believe we would be better THIS year with him at the helm. Moving forward? Only time will tell.

Chaney was an excellent coach who ran the Temple program with strong conviction. We had a firm identity with him as coach; toughness, the match-up zone, 6 am practices, a short bench, a modest amount of real NBA level talent, a brutal out in the tournament etc. The reality is Temple wasn't always a highly ranked team with Chaney. We had a few really good regular seasons, '87, '88, '94 and '00 come to mind, but often we kind of flew under the radar until the tournament when we tended be a marginal seed that was a nightmare to play.

The basketball program desperately needs some juice. The LC can become a morgue when we're not playing at a nationally relevant level. I often wonder what recruits think when they come in for a visit because sadly it's not hard to find a school with a better atmosphere to play in.

RE: Temple Basketball
Why can't they shoot, even under Chaney, they struggled to get shot off, and with shooting %.
Every player seems to regress with his shot. Brunson at the end could not not hit the xxx damn rim, yet plays 12 yrs in the pro's.
I thought Dunphy was out of his element when took this job, however I did think the OFF would start to show some consistency. I was wrong, they looked like they never played OFF before.
McKie & Jones were my favorite, McKie struggled with his shot, then plays pro BB

I've been asking this ? For almost 40yrs now. Why can't they shoot

Substitute Calhoun for Chaney and UCONN for Temple. Same deal.

Good way to look at it... Although Fran Dunphy was an established and respected coach as opposed to Kevin Ollie an inexperienced former local BB star much like current Temple coach Aaron McKie. The results are similar, but in Temples case it took longer to get there.

With LB's controversial history, probably wouldn't be possible to hire him in that capacity. However, since he is one of Coach McKie's former mentors, Aaron could benefit a lot by picking up the phone and talk to L.B. (and Ellerbee and Chaney, and whomever else), rather than leaning so heavily on Dunphy's advice.

It appears that the team's decline has taken place during the time that McKie has spent the most time seeking FD's advice. The fact that FD's guidance hasn't had any positive results should make it clear that Coach McKie needs to seek assistance from another former mentor.

I'm wishing Aaron the very best, but the fact that he has still saddled himself with one of Dunphy's assistants (Clark) and still consults with FD on a regular basis may end his collegiate career before it can even get off the ground.

He may need to shake up this coaching staff, since the players haven't been improving, have been making too many mistakes, and don't even seem to be giving it their full effort.

Jed, I believe the effort from the players is there, I just believe the talent isn’t. Recruiting better players is of course the coaches responsibility. As for McKies coaching career, he will get at least 3 years but probably longer to make his mark.

With that small difference that UConn won a national championship in this league with Kevin Ollie, not Jim Calhoun.

why do uconn fans do this..when they themselves agree..

non uconn fans: uconn will only ever be good under calhoun
uconn fans: we won a title under ollie

different non uconn fans: uconn has been trash for the last 6 years
the same uconn fans: we sucked because ollie was trash, he only won because he had calhouns players

you guys love to play both sides of that argument
