We were outcoached
The last area of the game I expected JMU to get beaten in was coaching. No way, I thought, that a relative novice like Entz could match the experience and track record of Curt Cignetti. Yet, it happened!

What I don't understand is we were running the ball successfully early, but for some fu**ed up reason, our coaches said, "Yeah, we better get away from that and start winging the ball all over the field against a stellar pass D."

STUPID!

Then, on the last play of the game, I have no explanation why a coach with a stud like Latrele Palmer in the backfield, who averaged 5.5 yards per tote (that's a first down every other play), would not run the ball with 8 seconds left and two timeouts, needing only three yards for a touchdown. Instead, the play called was a pass with a high probability of being intercepted since all of the d-backs didn't have to worry about the long threat, creating a traffic jam in the endzone.

Latrele should have 20+ totes per game instead of being held in reserve and only coming in in the second half. Use him! But, no, let's wait until we are down 21-10, then try to use him to claw our way back into the game.

STUPID!

+1. But us being out coached in this game doesn’t mean that I don’t have faith in the staff going forward.

RE: We were outcoached
The loss reminded me of Super Bowl 49 where the Seahawks called a pass on the Patriots’ three yard line instead of hand the ball off to Marshawn Lynch. Instead, Wilson threw an interception. With 8 seconds remaining and one time out in our pocket I felt like we should have handed the ball off to Palmer. Palmer never had a negative rushing play all day and was very productive running the ball against the Bison.

Oh well...

I hope our coaching staff will give Palmer the ball in the first half next year as opposed to waiting until after halftime.

Was Polk blanketed by the NDSU DBs the entire game for those in attendance at the game?

Couldn't really tell watching game on the TV. Definitely had two guys on him or near him when DiNucci tried to hit him to make it a 2 point game at the end of regulation.

I agree. I don't know where the wheels fell off. It is very Un-Cignetti. But, I trust he and his staff will learn from this and move forward.

Another thing that bugs me is allowing any back, Lance or anyone else to gain 166 yards. Lance is Landers 2.0, awesome running back who can also pass when necessary, but it is never the first choice.

I didn't notice if anyone was spying Lance, but if not, why not? Entz prepared for Nooch's designed runs, Cig, not so much for Lance's runs, even though it was plain to see they were coming.

Still, I have faith that Cig will fix what ails us. Just a shame to lose to the smellies in such a painful way.

I didn’t like having Maloney in for numerous plays on the critical late 2 drives, particularly having him under center.

It also seemed like we were never able to make adjustments to keep Lance from killing us on QB runs on pass plays - seemed like he was going through 1-2 reads, then taking off quickly.

I would have liked to have seen more of an effort to get Polk loose in space.

I wouldn’t say it was bad coaching, but I did feel that NDSU’s coaches were a step ahead of us today.

I agree 100% on the first and last comments. Horrible to break out those dumb wildcat plays at that point of the game. You want to get ballsy tie it into getting Polk more involved and getting the ball in space. As for Lance, I thought they did make some decent adjustments. I believe he had more yards in the 1st half despite busting that 44 yarder in the 2nd half, and again I believe that was aided by some holding that went uncalled.

as a NDSU fan I thought our coaching was pathetic when it came to time mgmt b4 halftime and the play calling and all the QB Draws my god.

I'd say both coaching staffs got C ratings today.

Talent> coaching at the fcs level

the fake fg and the fake reverse were 2 plays that ill give credit to ndsu coaches though

Both went for touchdowns in an 8 point game.

Meanwhile, we had four trips to the red zone that came away with 6 total points. We couldn’t find the plays that would be successful in those situations to get touchdowns, not field goal attempts.

I don’t see a better example of where coaching made a massive difference in a game.

This loss for us was totally on coaching.

He is!

Doesn't say much for our coaching staff to be outcoached by a scruffy-bearded redneck, does it?

It was obvious we were setting up a double pass, but I was disappointed we did it on the next series on the very first play where we showed that look again.

Hyper it didn't work that's the problem. Our bag of tricks involved a 3rd string QB who barely played. Get real.....
