I don't even think the arena was half full. I'd guess 1K fans at the most.

Official attendance for the UR-Radford game was 1847. I don't know if there were more or less for the first game.

Our tickets were for the whole day. I wonder if that number is tickets scanned for the day.

She was surprisingly into the game, helping getting chants going, stomping her feet on the bleachers, joining in on some ref complaints, etc. She also was talking to a lot of the athletes there, a bunch of them were in the stands and came down to talk to her, as well as meeting plenty of other fans. Far less up in an ivory tower than I would've expected.

I think this is such a positive. I don’t ever remember seeing Terry at the games. I also noticed on some of the football highlights, she was on the sidelines offering positive support.

Terry Driscol was at every game, his seat is behind mine one row back.

No seat is going to be a bad view. The upper deck wasn't needed for this game (nor were the seats in the area across the court), but the sight lines are all very good.

Thanks all. The Huge quote led me to believe that the place was packed with NOVA alums. During the game, listening to Jay's radio broadcast, the crowd cheers definitely seemed to be on the side of the Tribe early in the game. Later in the game there was a discernible crowd noise in favor of SFU. You could hear lots of groaning, though, when things (like turnovers) did not go the Tribe's way.

There was a larger Tribe fanbase there, but the arena is quiet. When the turnovers were happening, we went silent and St. Francis fans got more vocal, but there was a lot more green in the stands. Throughout most of the game, you could hear the squeaks of sneakers on the floor and all the defensive chatter from both teams, and I don't think that's an indictment of the fans, but just a weird thing about the arena. There was not music pumped in constantly.

The upper deck was not at all needed for this game though. The arena only had seating behind both baskets and on one side, aside from floor seats and some high top tables behind them. The arena looks pretty good for what's there, but it feels half-finished even though everything that's complete is polished, if that makes sense. There are also lots of places to stand and watch if you're a pacer not a sitter.

Yeah, I agree. Like everything you need is there, and it's all nice enough - bleachers, concessions, scoreboards, etc, but none of it looks complete. You can tell it hasn't been used much/hasn't been broken in.

There's a lot of construction going on in the area around the arena, I'm curious what it will look like by the end of the CAA's time there. I'm hoping that a few restaurants or something pop up, right now the only place to eat in the area seems to be a Popeye's.

I spoke with one of the developers. The buildings just across from the main entrance are all occupied apartments/condos. Developers are renovating west to east and expect to have most buildings completed within 6 months. Parking is going to be a problem come CAAT time. That blue lot was big enough for Sunday but won't cut it in March.

Yeah, looked like a bunch of housing, I guess I was just hoping that more housing would result in more restaurants/things in the area.

The parking thing isn't great, the green line is a pain for me to get to, and I'm not sure how much I'd love walking from the arena to the metro late at night.

FWIW, my gameplan for the tournament after the St. Francis game was to Uber/Lyft from wherever I'm staying. Hotels I would stay at are close enough and the arena seems to have that part of transportation pretty well settled, including a designated area for pickup/dropoff.

I noticed shuttle buses, too. No idea where they picked up. Maybe some hotel will partner with the venue/CAAT and offer shuttle service. But, I'm not sure I'd stay in any hotel within 15 minutes of the venue.

If they were smart, they would have sponsor hotels with blocks of rooms at the group rate, shuttle service, meeting rooms, etc.

Would you strongly discourage someone from doing an Airbnb within 5-10 minutes? Unfortunately with kids in car seats, Uber, etc becomes much less viable.

Depends on which direction. National Harbor is probably about 10-15 minutes away and isn't bad crime wise/would have more stuff to do. The immediate surrounding neighborhood didn't look fantastic, not completely horrible, but not great in terms of both safety and stuff to do.

Alexandria is a little further out, probably 15-20 from the arena, but that might be better

We rode one of the shuttle buses from the Green lot because we didn't know how far the walk would be or what it would be like. We walked back instead of taking the shuttle because it was only a couple blocks.

National Harbor is pricey but there's a lot to do. Ferris wheel, restaurants, icecream, playground, etc. Great spot for families.

I'd do Old Towne Alexandria and see about catching the ferry to National Harbor or Uber to the arena. I love that area.

I'm a 48 yr native of the area and work a whole lot all over DC. When you hear/read Barry Farms, Anacostia, SE DC, and Barnaby, you think about how to make it out safely. The really good news is, if last Sunday is any indication, the place will be swarming with cops. I'm serious, police on every corner, squad car lights going, with a clear display of law and order. They are going to be everywhere during the CAAT. Mystics play there, correct? I've heard of no issues at Mystics games.

Just so everyone doesn't think that DC is still a war zone......The Nationals stadium is near some pretty rough areas too on both sides of Maine Avenue as you approach from the Wharf area, but I never feel like I'm in danger. Same thing with cops.

5-10 minutes walking? Yes, I would discourage. Probably plenty of options within 15 minutes driving (and definitely 20). National Harbor, Old Town Alexandria-ish, anything around Kingstowne in Springfield...

I think things will probably be fine at the stadium during the tournament but that is not a neighborhood I would wander around in to "see what is there".
