Statistics against six DI teams so far
Thought it would be interesting to check our stats against our DI competition after 6 games. Excluded UNC
Campbell, Davidson, FIU, Cleve St., Boise St., Stanford
Record 2-4
UNCW 59 ppg
avg. fg. 21-53 fg 39.6%
3pt. avg. pt fg 6-17 3 pt. fg%,353
avg. FT 12-16 75 FT%
avg. off reb 8 def reb 26
assists avg 9.8
TO avg. 15.7
Stls avg - 3.83
Opponents
71 ppg
avg fg 28-61 45.9%%
3 pt. avg 7-21 .333%
Avg. ft 11-18 61.1%
Avg. off reb 10 def reb 26
assists avg. 15.83
TO avg. - 12
Stls avg - 6
A few numbers stick out.
1. Our overall FG% is only 39.6% although we have taken fewer 3 pt. attempts than our opponents.
2, We average 8 less FG attempts per game than our opponents.
3. We shoot a higher 3 pt. % than our opponents, but average 4 fewer attempts per game.
4. TO's and steals differential accounts for 6 fewer possessions per game.
Overall, our defense appears to be improved over last year, especially our 3 pt. defense. If you take away three point attempts, we are giving up 52.5% shooting from 2.
However, shooting only 39.6% overall without many 3 point attempts is killing our scoring.
Looking at this, we only have a few options to improve
1. Take more 3 point shots. We actually have some pretty good shooters, and the return of Ty and Estime will make us even better.
2. Play Boggs 30 min.+. He should play as much as anyone on this team. He is one of our best rebounders and is hitting 58% of his shots overall, 40% from 3, 70% from 2, as well as 78% from the stripe against DI competition. He compliments everyone when he is on the court, and is always moving to get open on offense, which gets everyone else moving.
The discrepancies aren't huge. But, the fact we went into OT with Campbell and had a tight loss to Cleveland state makes them look better than they really are. We were blown out by Davidson, Boise St. and Stanford. If our competition is closer in play to Campbell and FIU, we should at least be competitive.

Agreed fully on Boggs. He can handle the duties of the 3, 4 or 5 positions because of his unique blend of shooting, rebounding on both ends, defense, and ability to attack the rim. He should lead the team in minutes going forward, or be close to it.

Which, I think the majority of the CAA is closer to Campbell and FIU than the likes of Davidson, Boise St and Stanford. That doesn't mean the majority of the CAA won't have nights where they excel but I think we'll be competitive in our conference.
Last year, we saw teams get W's on us because our 3 pt defense was absolutely horrid. I don't think we'll see the same problem this year, which should keep us in a lot more conference games than we were competitive in last year.
Additionally, I think our offensive capabilities will improve against conference opponents as well.
Overall, despite our woeful OOC against D1 opponents, I think we'll still compete in the CAA. I don't foresee us competing for the top spot, but I could see anything from a 4th-7th place finish.

I think 5th place is our ceiling. W&M, Charleston, Northeastern and Delaware all look better than us. C.B. is 0-6 against Bill Coen, 0-4 against Earl Grant, 0-4 against Martin Inglesby, and was 1-3 against W&M under Tony Shaver. Thus, I don't see us doing better than splitting against any of those teams, and we could easily go 1-7 or 0-8 in overall H2H against those 4 squads.
Hofstra is more talented than us, but C.B. is 3-2 against Mihalich, so we'll see.
There isn't any team in this league that I'm confident we'll sweep.

Cacok owned Hofstra and he's gone, so i'd throw out the Hostra record for McGrath. This will really be a toss up for me this year. If our 3 pt. defense is as improved as it appears to be, we can compete with almost every team. If McGrath sees the value of Boggs like we do and gives him the minutes he should play, he adds a lot to this team. If Gadsden comes back and is 100%, he adds a lot to this team as well. Linssen has even been a pleasant surprise and is going to be able to compete in the paint.
I'm actually somewhat optimistic.
If we started Toews, Gadsden, Sims, Boggs, Linssen, that's a pretty competitive lineup with decent size that should be able to score, hit threes, rebound, defend and score in the paint.
Bring Phillips, Estime, Okauru and Dodd off the bench, and it could be a really solid rotation.
The CAA looks ok, but there doesn't seem to be a dominant team out there. I think our top side potential is #3. But, our bottom potential is #7. Hofstra and NU are the two teams I can't see us getting ahead of. My biggest concern is that McGrath will play too many players as he's done is the past. We have too many guards, and he is going to feel the pressure to give them all PT.

Your last point hits the nail squarely. That is really as big of a problem as not recruiting any legit post players. Even in the last game against Stanford, as soon as our guys were on a run in the first half when we went on a 9-0 run my mouth dropped as I watched him send 3 (maybe 4) players to the scorer's table. That rotation had scored 9 unanswered points in about 2 min of play and he was about to nearly do a line change. I couldn't believe it. Then as soon as that happened the game slowed back down and Stanford went on like a 26-5 run that we never recovered from, despite outscoring them 35-34 in the second half. He's going to have to be honest with some of these guys and play lineups that can win games.
Additionally, we need Toews to get back his confidence and on court swagger that he had last year. I can't figure out what's up with him right now. It's seemingly starting to bother his ability to finish and shoot. Something is clearly different with him this year. I'm hoping that he gets his groove back sooner than later. We need him back to being the player that makes everyone on the court better.

Sure looks that way. With the non DI teams on the schedule, it's hard to say where this will shake out in the end. But, we'll take it for now. This is why i'm somewhat optimistic. Our rebounding hasn't dropped off so far and our defense, espcially from 3, has improved. I feel like our offense will get on track as we narrow our lineup and get back Gadsden and Estime. If we could put together some scoring from 3, we should be ok,

I like Boggs in the corner (when he's not moving around causing the defense to shift and not sit on our shooters). I like Sims in the corner, but I also like his shot from deep away from the corner. I prefer Gadsden away from the corner as well.
I'd love to see a shot chart for Toews too over his career. From my memory and eye, I feel like he shoots at a higher percentage when he's at the top of the key looking spot on. Anytime he's off to an edge, I don't feel as comfortable with his deep shots, granted I think those are a lot of times b/c the shot clock is winding down.

I don't have faith that Roy had his guys giving all they had against UNCW. I think he was going to get the W, but wasn't intereested in beating us by 40 or 50 if he could.

Now i thought the same initially, but then watched what happened when they played Elon, the game had a similar flow.

May be. But too much of a connection there. No way Roy was coming to Trask and putting a beat down on UNCW and McGrath.
