How, if it was truly a resignation? If it worked like that, wouldnt he have resigned yesterday so he got the $900k buyout. I don't think you can quit and still a buyout.

Yeah that is what happened. And it's not much of a choice now is it. You can resign or you can be fired, but either way you won't be head coach here next season.
I'm glad we held up our end of the contract and paid the buyout. He deserves it. But calling it a resignation is just being nice. Dude did not have an option to return.

He 100% resigned.
Again, you don't pay out buy-outs for people who quit. We are calling this a resignation as a show of courtesy for all his year's of dedicated service.
Whether they had to pay the buyout or not is not the question. Wilder resigned and was given the $600k buyout.
No.
That doesn't happen.
There is no scenario that ODU pays $600K if the coach resigns. That would be irresponsible and more importantly, since ODU is a public institution potentially malfeasant.

Did he officially resign? Yes
He may have been given the choice, but he both resigned and received his buyout.

Though, im hoping it is just a reactionary decision to Wilder leaving and that he will be talked back into returning.

He tweeted it after this morning's team meeting. I do not think he would stay if we hired Baby Beamer. He's got his eyes set on the league. Good luck to him.

With personnel matters, an employee is sometimes given the choice to resign or be terminated.
The choice is offered for various reasons, including altruistic motives of the employer out of respect as to reputation and potential future employment of the employee.
Very often that choice is also in the best interest of the employer so as to insulate itself from some future related litigation, and/or a financial obligation such as a buyout, a bonus, or even severance.
If BW officially resigned, and was still payed the termination buyout monies as stated in his contract, there are serious legal ramifications to a publicly chartered and operated institution.
Only if that money was paid from a private funding source would it be acceptable.

So not transferring but entering the draft. That's a little different than transferring to a new school or decommitting.

And would also make it a silly decision not to play his last couple of games. to "save his redshirt".

Well WRIC, The Daily Press, ESPN, CBS Sports, ODU Sports and The Pilot online ways he Resigned. It sounds like he resigned. Mabey some can't accept that.
This is common practice -- give someone the chance to 'save face' by resigning instead of being fired. If they don't resign, then they are fired. Does anyone really believe that Wilder, after all he has said would 'step back and conclude that he must go for the good of the program' on his own. Get real.
I appreciate what he has done in building the program from scratch. But BW is not ODU Football. His performance was never FBS caliber and I thought that this was permitted to go on way too long - he was very well compensated for his performance at ODU -- so it is not like he is getting screwed over. I hoped that he would learn FBS in an on the job training mode, but he never was able to make the transition (e.g. Mike London). I wish him well and hope that the assistants find a soft landing as well. But performance talks in this world.
I'm excited for the next chapter of ODU Football now!! Good luck to BW and I hope that things go well for him.
