RE: Dayton to AAC
I like Dayton and wish we played them more often. Not sure I would be thrilled to share a conference with them though and give them a better chance to battle us for recruits. Speaking of recruiting -- Obi Toppin was unrated out of high school by most of the major recruiting services. Oops.

St. Louis makes more sense geographically for sure. I know everyone here is gun-shy about hybrid conferences, but... a 14-team AAC with St. Louis, Dayton, and VCU added would potentially be pretty damn good. Only way this scenario would make sense is if we go to 12 with another football-only member like Army or Air Force.

True, and they have quite a bit of history with Temple and Cincinnati, so they would have some built-in rivalries.

If Dayton or St Louis were ever able to string together a few epic tournament runs I’d like to think that their catholic brethren in the BE would have to give serious thought to letting them into the clubhouse.

That's probably what it would take. I don't see them budging otherwise now that they have UConn. I haven't read or heard otherwise, but I'm assuming the Big East will go with a 20-game round robin once UConn joins, right?

Get one football only. Then add a basketball program like VCU, St Louis, or Dayton and be done.

St. Louis makes more sense geographically.
Not if you ask Cincinnati, which is only 1 hour from Dayton.
.
But seriously...
Let's begin by noting that Dayton basketball has a stronger national recognition/brand than St. Louis has, and has been more successful in the past 15-20 years, with multiple NCAA trips over the past decade.
If they were to replace UConn basketball, the flight time for every AAC team except Temple would be an hour shorter than it is for UConn.
Dayton would shore up the AAC's foothold in Ohio and the midwest viewership market.
While St. Louis is closer to the AAC West teams, Dayton is closer to CIN, TEM, ECU, UCF, and USF.
In addition, they're regional rivals with Cincy and have also had a lengthy rivalry with Temple.

The BE considered adding both, but chose Butler and Creighton instead.

adding Air Force football-only along with St Louis for Olympic sports would be ideal IMHO.

I agree completely . Not sure the infatuation with St Louis. The have like 10 tourney births in their history and honestly aren’t much of a brand name. I think Dayton and VCU are both much more attractive if the league decided to go that route. I would lean towards VCU just because the add a new market and are a good fit location wise. While I like Dayton equally as much being in the same market as Cincy doesn’t make a lot of sense.

This is the scenario we should be shooting for...
I don't know of any school who could bring a good football and basketball program that would actually come...
BYU could...But no way in hell they join.

over the last 9 seasons SLU has 4 NCAA tourney's with 3 Round of 32 appearances...1 CBI runner up...and a 17 win season to boot.
plus they have a great market, new arena, and fit the AAC footprint

RE: Dayton to AAC
The ideal scenario is an all-sports invite.
But as we know ... the choices are limited.
So if a football only and an all-sports but football ...
I'm on record with preferring VCU and, next, Saint Louis. But Dayton would be a strong choice, too. However, would either SLU or UD want to join? They are private Catholic universities. I think VCU could be enticed.
As to the football only ... that's the challenge. IF Old Dominion could get all its other sports in the Atlantic 10 (to replace VCU in this hypothetical), I would take the Monarchs. I feel the ODU football program has strong potential (though I realize a lot of AAC fans disagree with me on this). ODU has a great fan base in both sports, has money, has a recruiting territory and has solid academics.
