I think it’s time to give Coach Sammis an applause. The development of this offensive line is pretty impressive. Great job OLine!!

On a different note, why on onside kick up 42-6??

RE: Game 10: Rhode Island
A few take aways.

1) about 4/5 thousand in attendance. Half of the home side left at half time. Some moved to the sunny side including a lot of parents
2) nobody in the gold lot
3) folks who didn't come missed the best game of the year
4) team is so much better with Mathis in the game. You can see it in the huddle, with his legs, etc.
5) defense is nasty. I don't mind a couple of aggressive penalties. Much more pressure than earlier in the year.
6) Miles Hayes had the game of his career
7) I don't know what else Yoder can do. This kid is amazing
8) Maybe our kicking game isn't bad when you just use Hooper and Eberle
9) Great tribute to Williamson, London and his daughter, and a general awareness of how important it is to find the match for bone marrow donors
10) London has the program moving in the right direction
11) We could end up 6-6

I personally loved the idea, and I would’ve liked to see them go for 60. If anything, it lets the players have fun. I do believe there was some chipping going on last year too, so the players might’ve had some input on that one.

Attendance 7,063. Not bad on the student side either given cold and 1PM start. They didn't seem to leave early either course they were in the sun.

Runs up the middle were the Ram soft spot. Some beautiful runs.

The enthusiasm of this team is high octane.

I respectfully disagree. They could have put 60 on them without calling that play. I was at last years game in the monsoon in RI, don’t recall any chirping between the teams. That call wasn’t made by the players. Let them have fun? They had fun today, would have without that call too. If a player did come to a coach that had no involvement in last years game telling the coach to call an onside kick up by 36 points, with there opponent showing no sign of life, I would tell him thanks, but no thanks, go back with your position group. London is a stand up coach.

This team performed all over the field today. Wasn’t needed.

A great win (isn't every win a great win?). Most of my comments have already been mentioned by others:

(11-09-2019 03:54 PM)Tribal Wrote:  Why go for 2 there? C'mon, coach.

They went for 2 twice in the game (the first one also failed but a URI penalty enabled the Tribe to kick it instead). So, not only a bad look, but bad twice.

(11-09-2019 04:12 PM)tribelifer Wrote:  I'd like him to get Mathis out of there before he gets hurt, unnecessarily.

Absolutely!! The Tribe was up 30 with 6+ minutes still left in the third quarter. I thought Mathis should have been out then. Instead, he didn't come out until 3 minutes were left in the game. All Coach had to do was look at tape of losses to Albany and Maine to see that Mathis needs to be in there -- and thus does not need to get injured in garbage time.

(11-09-2019 07:06 PM)tribefbfan Wrote:  On a different note, why on onside kick up 42-6??

Again, a bad look. What was London thinking? That's just embarrassing. If a team kicked an onside kick against us or went for 2 (twice) when leading by 30 points then I would think that it was low class and I would remember it.

Re 5: Yes, very good defense, generally --- although they allowed too many long bombs (granted, to a very good receiver). Too bad the defense didn't do some of this better play earlier in the year before the season got out of hand. (Although I actually blame the offense for those losses more than the defense, but the defense certainly contributed by playing off the receivers far too much and getting zero pass rush).

Re 9: There were quite a few announcements about a table set up on the concourse to allow people to sign up for the bone marrow registry. So I went down at halftime and looked for the table. I walked end to end on all three levels. I never saw a table. I asked two different RMC Events people, on two different levels, where I had to go to sign up -- and nobody knew. To add insult to injury, when I finally gave up and was climbing back up to my seat, there was yet another announcement about a table on the concourse .....

Re 11: I agree that we could end up 6-6. Then I think about the losses to Albany and Maine and even Villanova to a lesser extent and even East Carolina and I just get irritated about what might have been!

I will agree with those that say that London is a good recruiter (although Yoder was a Laycock recruit). Now I wish that he had a better idea of what to do during the game.

I mentioned that when it happened. I don't like the decision for a number of reasons. 1) it's unsportsmanlike and could lead to retaliatory hits on our players 2) there's no benefit in hitting 50 pts, something we ended up doing the proper way 3) why not give Hooper or Johnston another chance to bury the demons from last week?

RE: Game 10: Rhode Island
Hollis Mathis. Bronson Yoder. Donovan Lester.

Barring serious injury these three remarkably talented freshmen are going to perhaps rewrite lots of W&M records
before they graduate.

London is rebuilding the offensive line, which has been getting better each week, and with a couple of the outstanding
offensive linemen coming in next fall and a couple of redshirted freshmen from this season's squad we should have the the
offensive line next season to set these three guys loose.

Mathis is quickly learning when and when not to run, has a great passing arm, and is improving his handoffs and laterals
by leaps and bounds. Speed we've never seen at qb here. He is our first, potentially great, modern quarterback.
Starting to learn how to step out of bounds to avoid injury to his slim frame. An off-season in the weight room will help
him greatly.

Yoder is a throwback to the old-time players. I could see him on the team with Buster Ramsey and Marvin Bass.
Good speed, great strength & power, and an ability to see the field. He, I have no doubt, would excel at linebacker
and play 56 minutes a game. A smashmouth player with running ability who just loves playing college football.

I really hate to say this, but do I see something of Jonathon Grimes in Donovan Lester? He is learning to play, but he's
got terrific running instincts, cuts on a dime, has Grimes like change of speeds and acceleration...and always falls
forward when he's tackled.

I'm trying not to get too bullish on these three freshmen, but I can't remember when we've had three freshmen offensive
weapons like this.

And kudos to the Athletic Department for the wonderful way they handled the bone marrow story both on the field and on the scoreboard video. Beautifully done.

And moving to see Nate Evans remembered with a scoreboard video and his mom at the game.

I don't think we've seen anything from Mathis compared to what he could be. He has terrible mechanics, is wildly inaccurate on many throws, and doesn't get his feet planted. If he cleans those up, he's going to be unbelievable. He has a rocket arm, incredible field vision, and anticipation. He reminds me of Lamar Jackson, but about 60 pounds lighter.

I don't think "the man above" allowed our team to rush for more yards, and this reads like a dig on our previous staff. I'd have preferred taking ownership of the several games where we didn't run well and credit the team with putting it all together vs URI, but whatever.

WE ARE A RUNNING TEAM #GOGO

SO PROUD OF OUR GUYS/COACHES 462 YARDS RUSHING TODAY A SCHOOL RECORD & 2,000 YARDS RUSHING ON THE SEASON WITH 25 RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS. LAST YEAR THIS TEAM ONLY RUSHED FOR 553 YARDS. ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH THE MAN ABOVE!

Nice crib, or at least I think that's what the youngsters call a home these days.

Gotta improve the point differential if London's going to get the attention of a MAC school looking for a new leader.

I mean, wasn’t it embarrassing to only have 553 yards last year?
I can guarantee you can go look on every game thread from last year and you’d find a poster attacking the staff. We almost got 553 rushing yards in 1 game! No matter who it is, a win in the CAA is a good win. They also have only rushed under 100 yards 3 times (against UVA, VU, and JMU). They also have rushed over 200 yards 5 times (against Lafayette, Colgate, Maine, Elon, and URI.)

All in all, can we just celebrate a blowout CAA win? The last time we had a more than one score CAA win, was against UR. 3 years ago.

The unsportsmanlike onside kick and 2 point conversion did not take all of the joy out of this win for me. Very happy to see the team clicking. But that's not the way I like my team to win. Tough to take pride in those decisions. If anyone see any explanations for why the team made those moves, please share them.

Yep, we can celebrate a win. So can our coaches and players. "The man above" obviously favors our RB coach more than our '18 staff, so why not crow about it, right?

Didn't hear much from our staff over the 5 game losing streak other than weathering the storm. I don't think digging on last year's squad and staff is the correct thing to do. Congratulate the team and move on.

Thanks Nogre! Interesting -- I wouldn't call that the concourse. Even so, they should have specified that they meant outdoors, along the fence near the track (and not on one of the levels of the inside concourse). Also would have been good if they had instructed the RMC Events staff about the location so that when people like me asked them about it they would be able to give correct info.

Thanks for solving that mystery.
