I may have missed it but does # indicate a school that currently qualifies for a conference championship game?

Correct. In the case of WKU, they have a half game lead over FAU and Marshall. Not a big deal, so...

The AAC, especially the west division, is on FIRE this season.
The MW is doing better this year too. About as good as AAC was in recent years’ past.
Is this just an up year for both? Or are both, or just the AAC, separating from the rest of the Go5? We shall see in the next couple of years.

it's amazing to think where the AAC would be right now with the Pitt/UCF game. UCF wins that game- and the AAC has right now 4 ranked teams and a 5th really close in Navy.
The AAC for sure had already seperated from the G5(well at least except for the MWC). MWC may be doing the same thing.

It will be interesting to see where AAC ends up at the end of the season.

Again, you have to look at the time frame: The AAC has indeed separated from the G5, including the MW - this year so far. Before that? Not at all.
And this year isn't even over yet.
And as I have noted, the basis of the AAC's success is very bifurcated - they basically look like a P6 conference right now because of dominance of the G5, not success vs the P5.
Against the P5, the AAC is 6-12. No other "P" conference is anywhere near that bad. All are around .500. E.g., the SEC is 6-6, the PAC is 6-5, the B1G is 4-5, the Big 12 is 6-5, the ACC is the worst, at 4-6. The MW is an amazing 9-9.
Where the AAC has made its hay is vs the other "Gs". Counting BYU, the AAC is an amazing 18-1 vs other Gs. That is the very best record of any conference, G or P.
To me, a "P" status built on beating Gs is ... suspect. So we will see how it turns out.

Then there’s the computers. As a conference, Sagarin, Massey (ratings and composite) have AAC knotted up with ACC with ratings annually usual for the lowest P5 conference per given season. So no doubt AAC is P5 material “THIS” season. If AAC keeps this up throughout the bowls and the next few seasons...
Another computer, Colley Matrix, has AAC AHEAD OF SEC!!! Colley claims “unbiased”, so, however they practice unbiased-ness, idk, but still amazing for AAC, no doubt.

Nice ESPN write up on Appalachian State today:
https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...wer-player
App State coach on the G5 race:
"..... At the end of the day, you have to be one those champions. So, whether or not we beat North Carolina or South Carolina or whoever, the championship matters first."

In football, the AAC has clearly separated itself from the MWC the past few years in terms of resources: coaches salaries, TV contracts, recruiting budgets, etc.
But in terms of on-the-field results ...
I tremendously respect the MWC.
Again, I (and many, many others) continue to note this: Strength in college football and basketball can be defined by resources, results or both.

It's one of the best G5 rivalries, and like last year, App has a lot on the line.

I agree, App State should rest some of their best players so they'll be ready for the final Sun Belt games and the CCG

GASOline on the G5 race.
Actually, just the opposite. Just sounded good, I guess.

Only chance for them not to is if they have a 2 loss champion and Boise/San Diego St meet as 1 loss teams.....

Probably true.
Cincy is the only east division team with less than two losses.
They still have:
ECU, UCONN, USF, Temple and Memphis left. Memphis will be the biggest test. Plus they would have to lose TWICE not to be in the CCG
SMU (0), Navy (1) and Memphis (1) are the teams with less than two in the west (note though that Boise is ahead of Navy and Memphis in the AP Top 25)
Memphis/SMU, Navy/SMU still to come, plus Navy still has Notre Dame. So minimum three losses among the four 0 or 1 loss AAC teams to come.

If SMU, Cincy, Navy, or Memphis won out- they are the G5 rep no matter what....
Yes Boise may be ahead of Navy and Memphis-
BUT
Navy would be adding in wins over Notre Dame, SMU, and quite possibly Cincy.
Memphis would be adding in wins over SMU, Cincy, and Cincy most likely.
either one of those combos push them ahead of Boise.
