Yes the Zips sucked, but that’s how good teams have to play against bad teams. Impose your will. Great game plan. We didn’t beat ourselves tonight04-rock Now build on it and beat The Chips!!!!

That and their best player didn't play. What happened to Kato?

The thing I like is that NIU adapted to the miserable weather and flourished in it. Remember the Ball State game?

I expected a win but Akron had their fourth string QB in by the end. The elements played a factor but you are talking about an Akron team that is now 0 - 8 and has lost by multiple scores every game. Buffalo and Kent State shut them down so not sure NIU shutting them down means all that much. I guess the takeaway is NIU is not the worst team in the MAC. Let’s see what happens next week at CMU. A team led by an established FBS coach and a place where NIU has historically struggled.

Little cloudy on that one, I was a lil banged up..think Childers, might just have flourished a little more back on that day..please do not perceive this as blasphemy!! Just my opinion..go sunshine / go bowers / go childers

I’m glad they showed no struggle against a bad team. Momentum is what we’re looking for. Building confidence for the next opponent. Our last bad weather game was a disaster. Happy about this kind of Win in these kind of conditions!

RE: We needed THAT!!!
Another very good long term sign for the HUSKIES is that the the coaching staff has gotten control over the undisciplined play, stupid penalties (some of them unsportsmanlike) that we had so much of in the early part of the season. I am not just referring to the targeting calls here.

I have been watching for this as an indicator of whether we did or did not have a major problem with our coaching staff. My conclusion is that the staff has done a very good job of getting a handle on this in a season where they could have lost their team. It makes me very optimistic about future seasons when they can run their offense with their recruits.

While the win was very needed it felt like they reverted to the old offense. And though effective, it does little to build on the new offense they’re trying to install. I have no idea what we will see if Bowers is back next week. Mostly passing? Mostly running? Balanced?

The offensive game plan was dictated by the weather. You really do need a strong running game in the MAC when the Midwest weather turns foul in the latter third of the season.

I don’t really buy that. It takes strong winds to hinder a passing game. Light rain, snow or cold should not cause a team to abandon the pass. It’s not like Toledo doesn’t throw the ball in November. I think Childers starting had a much bigger impact on the commitment to run.

You are right that coach Hammock often says that he wants his players to play to their strengths so the need to start Childers was likely a factor in the run heavy game plan.

However in Hammock's post game conference he stated that the weather dictated the game plan and that he told his coaches that he wanted to run the ball a minimum of 50 times this weekend and we were a bit over that metric.

It’s common sense . Childers has a short range passing game and his strength is running. You don’t go pass heavy in this type of game. Plus they couldn’t stop us from running the ball. Do what works. Challenge them to stop you. I was also encouraged by the touch on some of his passes too. Definitely improved.

AMEN! Yes, Akron sucks but NIU did EXACTLY what good teams do to bad teams. 49-0 - that's what I'm talking about!! We ran the ball effectively and played good defense. Nice win, hopefully this gives the team some confidence going into Central Michigan next weekend. Hopefully we get Bowers back for Saturday and we pick up another MAC win....

Lets keep this rolling fellas... Go Huskies!

Beat Central Michigan. Who's going to Mount Pleasant?!?!

There's no doubt there were several questionable coaching calls at the beginning of the season. However, I think we should give the coaching staff a lot of credit for continuing to improve each week despite the injury bug and suspensions. When you consider the lack of experience throughout the defense, it's amazing that we're not getting blown out. (This is a sign that our coaches are prepping the players despite their inexperience). Although our record is not what we want, I see huge upside with the team and where we're headed in the future.

No but Toledo wilts in November. Last year they flat out quit when NIU was running it down their throats.
