UConn 10
Houston 17 (End of 3)

Is this Houston's "scorched earth" tactic of crapping on UC from beyond the grave?

"You beat us? Oh, yeah??? Well, we'll show you how bad we really are."

Can't even enjoy the frick'n victory one week before it gets shat all over.

Relax! We got the W and that's all that counts.

Just enjoy the moment of picturing all those Houston guys turning purple as they watch.

The EFFING ILLINI nail a 39 yard walk off FG and knock off Wisky. Thought Wisky was legit. Absolutely cannot lose to the illini for any reason.

#19 SMU vs. Temple

i'm assuming that we want Temple to win since it would be better for Cincy and we don't play the Ponies but is there a scenario where it's better for SMU to win?

OK State up 13 - 7 on Baylor

Sucks that our "rival" MyAMuh Oh! hasn't done shat since Ben Roethlisberger was the QB. We play a team on the equivalent of UGone every year OOC.

Actually they are almost equal this year coming into this week's games based upon the Massey ratings: Marshall is 94th, Miami is 99th.

Miami beat N. Illinois and is now tied for first in their division. The MAC is a funny league. Remember a few years ago when NIU, Toledo (Jason Candle was going to be the next big HC thing) and even Buffalo were variously talked about as programs on the rise and potentially ripe for expansion to a conference like CUSA or even the AAC (in the minds of some)? Now Ball St. is the only one undefeated in their conference games and the conference looks wide open.

Years? Those schools were talked about a couple months ago when UCONN announced it was leaving.

Yeah I was probably being a little too generous to allow some people to avoid embarrassment. Speaking of embarrassment, not that one game defines everything, but Toledo lost 52-14 to Ball St. today.

Hoping this is the week that Boise State goes down.

#17 Arizona State lost to #13 Utah. Wonder if we will move ahead of them, or Michigan (if PSU finishes them)?

Would be nice to move into the top 20, but I’m not going to count on it. Especially after a relatively uninspired performance today at home against Tulsa.

Yeah, they have a chance at a better season this year. My point was playing a "rival" every year that has struggled in wins over the past two decades doesn't help our SOS. Since the Ben Roth year of 2003 when Miami won 13 games, they've only won double digits once since then - 10 wins in 2010. Since 2010 the best they've done is 6 wins [twice] and the remaining seasons they've won 5 or less games.

Part of what I'm saying though is that's the nature of the beast, especially in the MAC, but in reality in just about every conference (heck just look at our conference): nearly everybody eventually goes up, nearly everybody eventually goes down and it can change direction very quickly. Much quicker than schedules can be completed and changed. We're hardly the only team that faces regular matchups that don't look as good when they happen as they looked when they were scheduled. Bottom line is even if you don't value the history with Miami, who do you replace it with?

I guess it would be nice if there was a team within an hour, or even a few hours driving distance (for the convenience of players and fans for road games not to mention our budgets) that was pretty good every year so as to help, or at least not hurt, our SOS. But of course, we don't really want them to be so good that they are going to beat us regularly - at least not if we want to play in NY6 games. And of course they have to actually want to play us, a G5 with a stadium that is actually getting a bit of a national reputation for presenting a very loud home advantage for big games. Got any candidates that fit the bill? Me neither.

So the Miami series is about as good as it could realistically get for us. We simply can't afford buy games with anyone who would go for them exclusively for our benefit. Yes it probably didn't much help us when they were/are way down for a long stretch, but we were actually pretty down 3 years ago too. I mean in hindsight, how many years out of the last 20 was our SOS such a big deal that one game really hurt us in a meaningful way? Miami's latest rise has been slower, but they're basically a reasonably respectable very nearby G5 opponent at this point (with some room to grow) and I think that's realistically about all we can ask for.

They had a bad week, but they were still able to pull out a win.

Whether you think they deserve it, it’s big for recruiting and for this program to take the next step to be in the Top 25, and hopefully higher.

Hopefully teams like Texas, Boise State, Michigan, and Arizona State all lose and drop behind us.

Your call, but that pretty much excludes the bulk of rankings both human and computer. Might I suggest you dig a little deeper into the season performance of other ranked teams before cementing your position. There's maybe a handful-ish of nearly flawless diamonds, but the rest, including UC, all have some noticeable flaws when you really look at them. Between laziness, indifference, ignorance and bias I think there's a lot of flaws in most human rankings (although the CFP rankings tend to be pretty thorough imo). Regardless, I doubt any of those factors tend to work much in UC's favor and yet ranked by them we are.

So I tend to prefer the (presumably unbiased) computer rankings, but to my rough estimation (see the massey composite rankings) they rate us even better than the human polls overall coming into the Tulsa game at least. We might not be great, but I think we're one of the better not-great teams out there.
