A bowl loss, sure. An absolute embarrassment, not even a little bit. It hurts recruiting, it hurts fan support, it hurts future bowl "upgrade" consideration, it hurts media image. A month of bad practice isn't a positive.

+1000. I could not agree more. The narrative that bowl games are not a big deal and nothing but exhibition games drives me crazy. When you are NIU and constantly fighting for relevancy beyond the MAC, EVERY game is critical.

Carey had a personality that turned people off. I've heard about Illinois high school coaches who despised him and his own assistants had a Rod-O-Meter in their office that they would set everyday based on if he was in a bad or good mood. You could see his demeanor in simple interactions with how he treated the media.

You finally got your wish regarding Rod Carey leaving.
Unfortunately the team's discipline and winning ways left with him.
From 2008-2018 we had coaching continuity.
Now we have discontinuity and are no longer a serious MAC West contender(barring a miraculous turnaround).

Atleast we will have a much easier time scheduling P5 teams.
Infact we might even get the Illini to play with us.

Winning ways? Look at the drop-off once all Doeren's players left, and Carey was using his own guys. He barely had a 50% win ratio after that. Not to mention he got blown out in pretty much every bowl game he coached in. The culture of NIU football was definitely trending down when Carey left. Carey lovers hang their hat on last years MACC win, but the MAC was god awful that year and we squeaked past Buffalo by the skin of our teeth... then got blown out in the bowl in typical fashion.

The MAC has been aweful for many years.
Carey haters who compared him to Doeren forget he used mainly Jerry Kills recruits
to have 2 incredible seasons.

Jerry Kill despite his record being less than Doeren and Carey, built the platform that got NIU to being a MAC contender nearly every year and building an unbelievable dynasty.

I also want NIU to get a top 25 ranking, but realistically I am very happy with occasional P5 wins and a regular trip to Detroit which Carey gave us 4/6 years! I do prefer a top 25 ranking over a MACC, however given our football budget it is allot to expect. We compete in the MAC and pay MAC salaries which are the lowest of any div 1a league including the Sunbelt. When our coach gets succesful he is recruited by a school with a bigger budget. Carey gave us the best value for our $. He was not the highest paid MAC coach but had the best MAC record versus other MAC coaches.

Hope to eat these words, but it will be a while before NIU wins the MAC West again.
Eastern Michigan and Toledo have far better records and will be tough to beat.
I doubt we can beat Central or Western Michigan, with our gung ho QB, whom I first thought was a super stud!

Regarding winning ways 1-4 is hardly a Potential Bowl worthy record.
If you want to avoid Bowl games in which we are overmatched, I think you have got your wish. Be careful what you wish for.

Ridiculous! Carey had a way of getting recruits to really like him. One quote you would here over and over when a player committed is "NIU felt like home to me". Trust me this was echoed constantly as he would win over recruits (I saw it first hand) Yes, He had a dull personality , but for most part players liked him and played for him.

Was it the coach they liked? Or the family atmosphere of the team?

It doesn’t matter because the coach is the one who instills that atmosphere.

I don't know about that... I have a friend who drives for Uber that has picked up NIU players. He follows NIU football and asked them about Carey, none of them had anything good to say.

Keep being a cry baby. Carey won! Dude didnt win bowl games, but he won 2 championships !

Hammock is not a good HC , and his play calls are questionable!

I am afraid to see how we play in bad weather, heavy winds , etc. we aren't a passing team! Bowers is trash! Sad to see NIU like this.

Hot Rod was a snarky ***. Hammock you could feel the pain he was having in his post game conference. Honestly, I would rather take a chance with Hammock and see how he faces adversity versus another year with an uninspiring guy that came off as arrogant. NEVER did I see Rod around town trying to be likable, promote, and get fans to the seat.

Rod came off like a not funny Mike Leach

Maybe players didn't like Carey because he held them accountable and didn't let them get away with stupid mistakes. And I'm not a big Carey fan. I never much cared what he was like personality-wise. He generally won games. Except for bowl games, which were a travesty.

Yeah I am in the same boat. I didn't care for his offensive strategy or complete meltdown in the post season but did respect the level of discipline that he demanded.

It is a good thing that this message board was not around in 96-98 when NIU football was mired in the depths of football hell. I could only imagine what would have been said about Coach Novak.

So you would take Hammock over Rod? Based on what his cuddly personality?
I ll go with wins and MAC Championships instead. Hammock has show me absolutely nothing to make me believe he is a better coach. Lets have this conversation again down the road.
