Possibly but there was a lot less expectation then. Not sure what it's like on campus now, but 96-98 on campus there was very little emphasis on football.

So you would take Hammock over Rod? Based on what his cuddly personality?
I ll go with wins and MAC Championships instead. Hammock has show me absolutely nothing to make me believe he is a better coach. Lets have this conversation again down the road.

Seriously, the whole thing about not missing him because he seems like a dick is pretty funny to me. We had Geoff Collins, who was mr. fun fun swag, but it was just a bunch of empty gimmicky nonsense from a manchild. Fortunately, that's now Georgia Tech's problem. I've seen zero complaints about Carey so far. Is he cuddly and mr. super outgoing? Not really, but he's no gimmicks, no nonsense, no bull**** which is exactly what we needed, and what resonates in Philly. Players seem to really like him, which is interesting considering whatever anecdote some Uber driver said.

All that matters is he wins, he's a model citizen, his players are model citizens, he graduates players, and he sends players to the NFL (which is like a big thing happening at Temple now).

I don't see any of that being an issue. The whole Bowl Game thing is pretty nonsense. They're a reward for players and donors. If it's not a major Bowl Game, you'll forget about it in a few months. I went to our Bowl Game in New Mexico when I was at Temple. We beat Wyoming. Do I remember much of anything about it? Not really. Does it matter that we won? Not really. Beating Navy in the AAC CG was a much bigger deal.

You'd remember it longer than that if you lost 55-7 and the other team looked like it was playing against air. And if it's just an exhibition game that doesn't mean anything, I expect them to tell the fans that - that they don't need to go since it's just a reward for the players. And then repeat that 5 years in a row.

We've had the same thing happen in Bowl Games. For whatever reason, a lot of players don't really get up for them. No coach is going to tell fans that. You're kidding yourself.

I'm pretty confident if Hammock tanks and you're holding steady between 5-6 wins a year, you'll be yearning for getting blown out in a Bowl Game.

I wasn't one that wanted Carey gone. But he had his limitations. Hopefully you'll be able to recruit a QB.

Yep. I would absolutely prefer to not go to bowl games if it means getting blown out and embarrassed, especially when the team fails to show up.

RE: FIRE THOMAS HAMMOCK!
Rod is a good coach. He coached a well disciplined team that could move the ball in terribly boring and uninspiring bits. This kept the offense on the field and the defense off. But it was only enough for us to win the games we needed. And handcuffed us to being a good team in the MAC for an eternity.

I'm a bit prepared to speak on NIU football, after taking a few days off to recover from multiple loses.

So I will say, I still think Hammock can be a great coach. Others have pointed out that this is his first time head coaching a team. He is working with other assistants he has no experience with, so it's kind of like the land of misfit toys right now. And it will take some time for them to gel. At the same time, he's instilling a new culture in the players to go for more than just being good. This involves taking more risk than they would traditionally be used to in Carey's ultra conservative system. It may take up to three years for us to be the dominant team we are used to seeing. As he is actively recruiting a roster of playmakers, and not ball movers.

I love this team and everything the Hard Way represents. I apologize for being so negative and wishing for Carey's return. But we've made a commitment to be great. And it's going to take some teeth pulling to make that happen. If it isn't Ham to do the job, we will keep moving till we find the right guy. But for now, he's still got my support.

Look at his background coaching running backs. He's turned some random dudes into productive guys. Justin Dorsett, Garrett Wolfe, Gus Edwards. I hope he can do the same here.

Our backup QBs now had offers from:

Indiana, Miami, Nebraska, NC State, Wake

Mississippi State, NC State

Our true freshman QB's best offer was Tulane, but he was a very good QB in Charlotte.

Our incoming QB's best offers were Miami OH and WKU, but he's put up some good numbers in suburban Charleston.

I think we'll be okay for a few years.

Do you see any tangible payoff to all those "nationally exposed" blow-outs in terms of star recruits coming to play for NIU or more fans flocking to Huskie stadium, because I sure don't.

Exactly. Plus, those bowl games are sewers draining money from Athletics.

Yes. $1M payout to play in the Boca Raton bowl....

I agree with you. I've been angry for the recent losses. But again, these are the growing pains of a team that seeks to go from Good to Great. We need to take more risks, risks that players and coaches aren't used to yet.

Go Huskies, in whatever rendition that is! Support Ham and the guys, and the road ahead of them.

I agree with what you say, and support the team and Coach Hammock.
However, what happened in the 3rd quarter against BSU was a travesty.
Coach chould have addressed it in his post game comments and taken responsibility.

A little contrition, with assurances that they know what the issues are and that they're being dealt with, goes a long way.

I've been a HUskie fan for a long time and remember the 90's all too well. We can't fall off the cliff like other MAC champions did, like BGSU and Kent State. They went from first to worst, and I don't want that for the Huskies.
