RE: Beet Sales
When I saw this thread, and it said beet sales, I was confused. Are we going to sell beets at the games?? Lol. I don't like beets all that much....
I'm all for having the beer at the games. I was on a committee here on campus and strongly suggested we have beer at the games. At that time, in 2015, there were 22 universities serving beer at football games, which included several smaller FBS schools, such as Troy, LA-Monroe, Lafayette, etc. Based on their location, and that they were in the "shadow" of the bigger universities in their state, it seemed to make sense to entice people to come to their games. However, it didn't turn out as big as a moneymaker as they thought it might be because of some increases in security, etc. On the other hand, I believe most of them kept it and it didn't cost them in the end because it did help attendance. In other words, they broke even on the venture.
Obviously, you may want some info on this and I don't have time at the moment to provide all of it, but there's info out there on the subject. ETSU has a couple of advantages. One, Axis Security I believe is owned by an alumni, so maybe they can work with ETSU on costs. Second, you could serve JC Beer in the stadium. Maybe not exclusively, but you could have JCBC, JRH, Great Oak, and Watauga (eventually) all available. That would get them involved, and you might save a little $$ that way. I like the idea, and I do research on addiction.
I think what's important to keep in mind is the reality of the situation. Often what people do, and I see this at every game I go to, is that people drink beer in the parking lot and sneak liquor into the game. It's not difficult, it's not like ETSU has drug sniffing dogs at the gates! This results in people actually getting drunk at the game. Thus, I actually think having beer @ the game will ironically help to control the situation, not make it worse. However, we haven't had really bad alcohol related problems at our games thus far.
Regardless, I'm in favor, but I doubt it will happen right away -- maybe next year.
