RE: NEW stadium construction
Disappointed in the Football teams performance. Played a very good 1st quarter, however NSU out played us in general 3 quarters.
Disappointments from a real game scenario in regards to the NEW STADIUM.
Let me start off with.....I LOVE OUR NEW STADIUM, but there are many things that surprised me. I hate to complain but I am going to address this as things that should be improved, as we move forward. Especially in regards to what we had been SOLD, or should I say TOLD how GREAT they would be...…?.
1). Concessions VERY LONG LINES for concessions. Either not able to handle the crowds or they may have been understaffed, or maybe there are NOT enough.
2). Restrooms and accessibility. NO Bathrooms for Handicap on the 2nd level on the East side. There is only 1 elevator on the east side. People in wheelchairs should NOT have to go 2 levels down and then still have issues with the size of the restroom and accessibility. (I know this is a special issue, but it should have been addressed). The lines of people that did not want to walk down the stairs or even the numbers of elderly that have difficulty with the stairs and any other reasons people have to use the elevator, well it made it very slow, ….. and there were long lines to get on the 1 small elevator. I think it was bad planning to make the handicap have to use the elevator to get to a restroom. I had hoped they would really make an effort to address those types of issues. I offered to share concerns a year ago. Again, I was told they would consult an ADA Advisory Group and they were confident that there would be huge improvements in those regards. If they did I would be very surprised? Just a minor note.... The women's restroom on the east side flooded bad. The water was coming out of the entrance of the restroom.
3). The Sound system IMO, it was not a huge improvement, at least from our seats (east side 2nd level). It was very difficult to understand at times. It also cut in and out often when they were talking over the portable mics. Never heard the refs at all.
4). The ribbon board on the Game Day Building. They removed the old Score Display Board that was there. In years past, I could see, or at least I think I remember being able tp see the teams down that we were currently on, and a clear indication of the yardage needed for a new set of downs. If they had that on the ribbon display, it was ….WAY TO SMALL???? The same on the big video board. If it was there it was to small for me to see?
LOVE the following from a real game scenario in regards to the stadium.
1). Love the concourse areas under the 2nd level and I'm sure the other levels are Great as well.
2). Video Board..... In general it is a BIG improvement
3). The Light Show Loved the concept and think this will have great potential in the future.
4). WATCHING THE GAME in the CLOUDS, Well on the 2nd or 3rd levels! Yes I know this is a singularly and not a shared WAHOO moment for most people. But, being able to see the game from an advantage point (2nd or 3rd levels) and not at the ground level, because you were restricted by barriers. Well especially for people that maybe confined to a wheelchair... WELL THAT IS A BIG DEAL. I am so thankful to be able to see the game, without a million students and other fans walking in front of you just at the moment of a big play.... finally we are able to see the game with a new perspective. In the past this was not possible at an Old Dominions Football Game. I would like to thank the ODU Administration and powers to be for this AMAZING gift. This is such a BIG DEAL...It made the whole night a much more enjoyable event.
5.) The Stadium in general IT Looks terrific and the Stadium will become a show place. I am very PROUD of our NEW STADIUM. It will be a huge advantage over the OLD STADIUM for recruiting and just as a visible reminder of how GREAT ODU is. The UNIVERSITY and the community needed this. After the game last night, I really became even more excited about any future improvements and the potential for the stadium as we embark on Phase II or even Phase III in the future. IMO, I think the stadium looks MUCH larger than the stated capacity of 22,500. I also loved the accessibility around the stadium in general. Even with the crowds it was much easier to move around.
