American Legion World Series
UNCW got some love with commit Trevor Marsh playing for Randolph County, NC. Saying he's one of the best hitters there. He's playing CF and 4 for six so far in the tourney.

He was voted National Player of the Year for the American Legion!

Newcomer Marsh Named National Player of the Year

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW freshman outfielder Trevor Marsh was named George W. Rulon American Legion Player of the Year on Wednesday after helping Randolph County Post 45 an appearance in the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C.

"It is an amazing feeling, being named the National American Legion Player of the Year," said Marsh. "I never thought I would win something as big as this. It is an honor to be given this award and it was great playing with such good teammates and great coaches."

Marsh, who begins his collegiate career with the Seahawks this year, hit .545 (6-11) with a pair of doubles, scored four runs and stole a base over the course of three games. He also took the mound in the final game and struck out four, walked one and surrendered three runs over 5.1 innings.

"This honor is awesome for our program, but even more so for Trevor," said Ronnie Pugh, head coach of the Randolph County Post 45 American Legion program. "Trevor is really deserving of this honor and we're looking forward to seeing him continue his career at UNCW."

The Seahawks open their fall season on Sept. 27 with their first team practice. UNCW will play two fall exhibitions, hosting NC State on Oct. 6 and closing out the fall on Nov. 3 at Coastal Carolina.

Is he going to pitch at all as a Seahawk? Sounds like he was good on the mound as well.

We haven't had too many 2-way players over the years, but there's no reason we won't see it here at some point. The trend of late in the college game is for pitchers to be some of the better athletes on their respective teams.

Its a nice honor but legion ball is not what it once was and virtually none of the top players in the country play legion ball. The top players are all travel ball guys who play in the big Perfect Game events. He is a good player but I would caution reading to much into legion ball awards.

So he's the best of the "next level" guys? As a mid isn't that what you are trying to get? I'll take it!

I am saying he might be a great player but I would caution reading anything into a legion ball award. There tons of travel ball teams out there that would destroy the best legion teams. He is ranked by Prep Baseball Reports somewhere in the mid 40's in NC. That is nowhere close to being the best next level guy.Not saying PBR is a great source because they only scout players who play in certain events and nothing like PG events in terms of competition. He has no ranking in PG which means he never played in a national type event. As a mid major program UNCW is recruiting guys who can play on the national level and they get very high ranked players on a regular basis.

American Legion may not be like it use to be, but it still consists of plenty of talent. They still have D1 college players involved. I also understand virtually any player can get hot and win an award like that. But I do believe this kid is going to be a big addition to our program.

No doubt that Legion still gets a few college players and some talent as a whole. It certainly appears that this guy can help as a hitter. I doubt you see him on the mound if he in fact throws 80-82 off the mound and that is what I was told by a guy that saw him in high school.
