To get the crowd going before the team enters, begin playing the Lion King and have two cheerleaders (or possibly students selected each week through some process) come out the tunnel with one carrying the State of Virginia flag and the other carrying an ODU flag. While the Lion King plays, they run the length of the field and raise the flags (State of Virginia over ODU) while the Lion King continues to play. As the flags reach the top, the music switches to the entrance song (Crazy Train?), and the team runs on to the field.
This recognizes the Old Dominion and the Lion King recognizes the Monarchs, plus the music should really get the crowd on their feet and cheering before the team actually takes the field.

Whatever happened to the “12 Monarch “ Flag??

I wouldn't be surprised if they got a cease and desist from A&M.

I was thinking the same thing. They are fairly litigious about anything that sounds remotely like 12th Man.

We can just change it to 12th Monarch instead of Man.
A flag in my name you say? I approve that . BTW don't we already have one that was used in the past and i am not sure ATM can claim it as CR infringement or what ever that some of you are implying that they could claim and send us a cease and desist.

Why not? Trademark law doesn't require it to match completely to be a violation. It just needs to be associated with the original trademark and found to be potentially confusing to consumers. 12th Monarch would likely fit those descriptions.

Hmm while i am no expert, doesn't it have to be inline with the actual product/service and appeal/serve the same user/consumer base while being indistinguishable from the copyrighted/patented product/service to the users for it to be in the grounds for a cease and desist. Like i said i might be wrong but i do not see how ATM can send us a cease and desist letter for using a 12th Monarch flag.

They won a lawsuit against a soap company and the Seahawks pay them each year to use it. So, given that, I'm sure they can stop another college football team from using a derivative of the slogan. And even if we thought we could fight it and win, I doubt we are willing to divert the resources to legal to do so.

Sure i can definitely see us stepping away if it ever comes to that. I mean why waste money on legal stuff when we can put an intern/s on it or even a campus poll to figure out a new thing that will be exclusively ours.
(07-28-2019 03:27 PM)ODU AGGIE Wrote: I ran across this today and thought some of you might enjoy hearing it. It's not particularly fitting as entry music, and its origins in the Civil War make it suspect in today's culture, but I find it noteworthy as it is a march composed for the governor and named "Old Dominion March" -- and I doubt 99% of us have ever heard of it. If you listen closely, you will hear strains of "Carry Me Back to Ol' Virginy" used throughout the piece.
Old Dominion March
"The Civil War–era composer Charles Chaky de Nordendorf dedicates his Old Dominion March to Confederate general William "Extra Billy" Smith, the governor-elect of Virginia, in 1863. Born in Vienna, de Nordendorf (originally Karl Sauer Csaky, edler von Nordendorf) came to Virginia during the war and taught music at the Danville Female College. He published more than eighty songs about the Confederacy and served briefly in the military, building fortifications. His wartime work earned him the nickname "Soldier-Songster of the Confederacy" in a 1974 article in Virginia Cavalcade."
BlueTrombone, to your knowledge, has the band ever played this march?
I'm pretty confident the Marching Band has never played this tune, and the double-whammy of it having references to "Carry Me Back to Ol' Virginy" & its confederate associations means I doubt it'll ever be played at a football game. I could see it being played in a concert/symphonic band with context though.
(This post was last modified: 07-29-2019 02:00 PM by Blue_Trombone.)
Someone mentioned Pharell. We should get him and missy Elliot to make a minute beat/song like "Drop It Like It's Hot " for before the entrance music. Maybe some few simple words included like "go ODU" for the crowd to follow. Include snoop with a line a two. I think this would be a good PR for the Uni if the beat turns out good and later made into a song.
And I would like to request the band to play Beatles " I want to hold your hands" and sing when the opponents have the ball during their first or second down. Just to make the opponents laugh. Maybe students will join too. And when ODU makes first down, band can play "She loves you yeah yeah yeah". And after the game "A Hard Day's Night". Just for fun and games.

Bumping this old thread because I watched the lion king with my kids today. If they did the first 30 ish seconds of the circle of life for the intro. Imagine if they had Mardi gras style float that looked like Pride Rock that Big Blue could climb up and wave an ODU flag from during the song.

Chicken dinner.
And we could have Eddie Murphy as King of Zamunda make an appearance on the screen...that would tie the Monarchs to the Lion King music.

So maybe Mardi gras style float isn't exactly what I meant. Basically meant a pride rock built on a flat bed that could be moved. If we are going to play the first part of the circle of life you might as well embrace it with the pride rock. Sometimes cheesy can work if you embrace it. I mean tech plays the hokie pokie to start the fourth. Not much cheesier than that at a college football game.

And we do Ice Cream and Cake. I didn't mean it as cheesy can't be a tradition, but that seems kind of lame as an entrance. But that's just me.
Also, jumbling together a string of songs/events can make the crowd lose interest. It needs to be captivating enough to build excitement. Do you think a bunch of college kids (and a lot of other casual fans) would be into the circle of life playing to get them going? Especially once the recency hype of the live action goes away after this year? (I loved the original as a kid and I just watched the "live action" one last night and enjoyed it as well). I'm down for Big Blue running up to something and waving the flag. He already has his solo entrance before the team, maybe that could string together with the team's entrance a little better than it does now. I don't mean to be negative and this board is just for discussion (so I'm probably taking these posts way too seriously) but I know the words on this board make their way to some people who are decision makers in the athletic department, as shown in some of our requests that have been granted.
Also, I didn't mean to single you out. It was just the most recent string of posts so I replied.
