Other conference schools really have no chance to travel to ODU other than maybe Charlotte or Marshall. We would sell so many away tickets if we were in the same conference as App State, JMU, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Ga State and Georgia Southern. On good years the ODU fan base will come out strong, but in down years we have to rely on other schools to bring away fans. That is just a reality of the situation while we are growing the ODU football program.

While i am not against a regional conference i don't think that is the group of schools that i want ODU to be associated with. American Conf is spread out just like CUSA is but most of them don't need opposing fan bases to fill their stadiums up. While its good to have conference mates that travel well you know you are deep doodoo if you need them to buy significant no of tickets to fill in the stadium. It ain't gonna happen. Admin needs to figure out a way to bring in competent coaches who can recruit and win and that will solve our issues. We played effing campbell and chowan with better crowds than last season for crying out loud. Again conference decisions happen with multiple sports in mind not just FB and well with the exception of UConn't. Imagine having basketball opponents from the schools you mentioned. Other than GaSt with was occasionally decent, it would bring flies to TED. Ain't happening.

We need competent coaches and conference realignment. Also for the basketball argument what the hell does it matter if you aligned with those schools. Its not like the current C-USA is a multibid league and we would be dropping to a 1 bid league. Weather you like it or not they are 1 bid leagues so its a parallel basketball move. Save travel costs and build regional rivalries.

See i get your argument about Texas schools and even LT/USM/FAU/FIU being far but Liberty/Coastal Carolina/Ga St/Ga So aren't going to bring in droves of fans esp when they themselves can't fill their own stadium's. Travel costs i am not sure how we are gonna do better other than JMPoo and Puberty. Its not like flying 3 hours is better than flying 4 hours(with costs being similar, may be better with bigger airports) esp with no major air ports in sight other than GaSt i.e. Atlanta. If you want to bus to Georgia it will still take ~9 hours. The whole regional will save costs will hold water if its truly regional like MAC. Yeah its a single bid league but opponents does matter. I am not a huge hoops fan but i am sure hoops proponents will be less than eager for that move.

Charter flights increase with closer airports...especially in smaller markets and municipal airports.

Its not that everyone in Statesboro Ga is going to come to ODU for an away game. Its that there is a much higher likelyhood that Hampton Roads has Coastal Carolina, Ga State, Ga Southern, App State, JMU, Liberty alumni that would attend a game vs Rice, UTSA or UTEP etc alumni. They may not bring in tons of fans but I would bet it would be more away fans that what we are getting now.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. While my personal experience might not be an indicator, i met more Rice, UNT, USM and WKU Alumni in DC/Hampton Roads than i did any of those other fan bases you mentioned with the exception of William and Mary and JMU and it might just be my line of work as Technical Architect. Here in Atlanta i do see more UVA boohoos than VT Chickedees so the whole notion of Alum being present closer to school might not be accurate.

Damn this thread is going sideways. Lets get back to the stadium porn. Looks like they are almost done with landscaping and are turning their attention to wrapping up the docking area enclosure.

Edit: Never mind there is still some visible unpaved dirt patch that needs to be taken care of the west side.

I really wish they would get Camera 1 back online. It has been down since Tuesday and has really made me more productive at work.

We are all younger, heavy on commuter type schools. None of us are bringing any significant number of fans on the road unless its an easy trip. ODU fans wont travel much farther than Charlotte, Temple and Marshall, and thats on a good day (and not many). And other than Marshall and ECU, no other G5 schools are going to travel to us in significant numbers either. That was the glory of the CAA. Lots of schools with heated rivalries with 3 or 4 hour drives. That said, saving the school money in travel costs is a good thing when we need to save every possible dollar for the NEZ, marketing and coaches salaries.

I thought Liberty traveled well and was even kind enough to send someone to try and save my soul right there on the corner of 49th & Hampton.

Liberty, App State and JMU would all travel very well. Ga State, Ga Southern and Coastal would be better than any current team in C-USA west.

That said, saving the school money in travel costs is a good thing when we need to save every possible dollar for the NEZ, marketing and coaches salaries.

I thought Liberty traveled well and was even kind enough to send someone to try and save my soul right there on the corner of 49th & Hampton.

Liberty is an easy drive. We would travel well there too. They also have a lot of alumni in Hampton Roads, and because of their niche, draw fewer commuters to campus than most CUSA schools. Their online students likely don't care, but they're paying the athletic bills for those who do. I still think that ODU should charge the athletics fee to all of our online students too and give them a subscription to Monarch Media and tickets to any home game or 1 away game closest to their place of residence. Thats a lot of cash left on the table.

Liberty, App State and JMU would all travel very well. Ga State, Ga Southern and Coastal would be better than any current team in C-USA west.

I agree with LU, App and JMU, especially because 2 are in state and all are closer. I don't think GSU, GaSt or Coastal would travel any better than Charlotte, and certainly not as much as Marshall.

CMett said they'd travel better than CUSA West.

Im not talking about Marshall or Charlotte. Unless ODU, Marshall or Charlotte departs for the AAC, ODU will be in the same conference with them for the foreseeable future.

My bad. I missed the "west" part somehow. :(

Is there a clear path back to talking about toilet spacing or uncovered concession stands?

I’m hoping there’s a pretzel stand at The Steve.
