"Felt that way"? Felt what way? And based upon what? A single comment made in the context of a discussion of a different issue, in a somewhat heated state because of disgust over the context of that discussion? Does LBJ's use of the n-word in multiple conversations more closely on point indicate that he was?
Glad you have the power to impute motives so freely from one comment.
I do not believe that Ronald Reagan was a racist. I do not believe that this quote establishes that he was. His body of work suggests that he was not.

But why let that much greater body of work get in the way of tidbit of sanctimonious preaching..... lolz.
Funny thing he is now saying the root of modern conservatism is racism with that stunning insight based on one isolated comment.
Kind of a step away from his original, 'well, no reason in particular just found it interesting' stance.
Yep, and he just doubled down on the smug and condescending *and* sanctimonious dimensions at the same time. Pretty good body control to pull that feat off.

Sorry... should I have said "felt that way at the time of the phone call?" Did you listen to the audio? Not great, Bob.
I've never thought that Reagan was racist (I didn't think that his attitudes towards homosexuals was too great). This audio was quite troubling IMO.

Since we're delving into the past and somebody posted a KKK sign, what do you think of this?
KKK was predominately Democrat
What conclusions should we draw about Democrats today based this?
Shouldn't we all wonder how racist Democrats of today are, given this obvious racism of the past; and what we can assume without any proof whatsoever is its continuing influence?
Turnabout is fair play, no?
I mean, you're not a hyprocrite, right? Be consistent in your standards and analysis.

You are imputing a lot from one stray comment. What he felt was pissed off that the vote had gone that way, and more specifically pissed off by the reaction of certain delegations to the vote. Have you ever played on a football team that lost a game and afterwards somebody said something like, "Damn, I hate losing to those bastards," or, "Damn, I hate watching those bastards celebrate"? Does that mean that the speaker literally believes that members of that other team were illegitimate children? I doubt it. Yes, I listened to the recording of the phone call, and that's how it struck me.
I look to the body of work, not a comment taken out of context, particularly before alleging anything as heinous as racism. Reagan's body of work says that he was not a racist. Al Sharpton's body of work says that he is.

Sure. But I've never gotten so heated that I called black people "monkeys" in disgust. I would bet that nobody here has either. The term "bastards" doesn't come close to using "monkeys" in the way that Reagan did during that conversation. It was pretty ugly. I don't think you can justify this because he was miffed at a UN vote.

The KKK as it relates to the current Democratic party has been covered before in this forum. The Reagan audio was new information. I'll try to post more after work.

I'm saying that one phone call is one phone call, and a body of work is a body of work. And you are trying to conflate one onto the other. I am going to choose to keep the two separate, and make any decisions based upon the body of work. Particularly deciding about going to the hyperbolic extent of asserting that an "icon" of republicanism/conservatism "felt that way." And I repeat, what is "that way"?
And to repeat another comment, do you deny that Al Sharpton is a racist?

I don't think Reagan was racist either, but what does it matter today if he was? A dead president from decades ago... does it matter if Kennedy was racist? LBJ? Eisenhower?
Going back to my original question of 'so, whats the point?'
And we will have 93 amble into the candy store and engorge himself with a fat fistful of smug 'I just thought it was interesting for no particular reason' pile of bull****.
All while avoiding anything but Reagan.
The KKK as it relates to the current Democratic party has been covered before in this forum. The Reagan audio was new information. I'll try to post more after work.
Im sure you will. That seems right up your fing alley to rehash **** from half a century ago ad infintum.
So, whats the point sparky?

I've never thought that Reagan was racist (I didn't think that his attitudes towards homosexuals was too great). This audio was quite troubling IMO.
I repeat, "Felt that way"? Felt what way? And based upon what?
You are imputing a lot from one stray comment. What he felt was pissed off that the vote had gone that way, and more specifically pissed off by the reaction of certain delegations to the vote. Have you ever played on a football team that lost a game and afterwards somebody said something like, "Damn, I hate losing to those bastards," or, "Damn, I hate watching those bastards celebrate"?
Quote:Does that mean that the speaker literally believes that members of that other team were illegitimate children? I doubt it. Yes, I listened to the recording of the phone call, and that's how it struck me.
So you didn't think that what you heard should be considered racist? I'm not saying Reagan's body of work in general but this specific phone call?
Funny you keep repeating a question that was answered. Good fing god. Give it a fing break.
I asked Owl#'s specifically in response to his justification of the phrase. Please see his answer just above.
#s answered your question, but I utterly fail to see anywhere where you afforded him the same respect of answering *any* of his in return. Amazing that.
Keep those drums pounding there 93.

Sorry... should I have said "felt that way at the time of the phone call?" Did you listen to the audio? Not great, Bob.

I look to the body of work, not a comment taken out of context, particularly before alleging anything as heinous as racism. Reagan's body of work says that he was not a racist. Al Sharpton's body of work says that he is.

apparently it matters a lot if they put his statue in a park.

Quick hits during work day.
re: Sharpton. I've always had negative feelings towards him. I wouldn't be surprised if he has said things in the past that were racist. I seem to remember him saying ridiculous things about "white people" as a group? I was going to look up some information on it after work but since you're calling me out on this here you go.

Where did I justify the phrase? All I have said is that you have tried to take it out of context and extrapolate onto it some kind of meaning that is not justified by the record. That's not justifying the phrase, that's attacking your hyperbolic insinuations.

The fun thing is that apparently one comment made 50 years ago from one member of one party is a proper moral cudgel to some, but having an exalted leader of the KKK from your party, let alone the mention of the deep Democratic commitment to segregation in the same time period is improper to cudgel with. Let alone constant comments about 'n-ggers' from architect himself of the Great Society at that same point in time.
If hypocrisy and smug condescension were Olympic sports, 93 wouldnt just be in a medal contention position, he would be moving into the Mark Spitz or Carl Lewis realm at this point.

re Sharpton: I didn't say that he has said things that are racist. I said he IS a racist. Don't confuse the two. They are different statements.
