On a brand perspective I guess, but even their hoops is pretty bad right now. They don't earn NCAA credits. Football side is one of the worst in the NCAA. I clearly would want to keep them just for a basketball comeback opportunity. That said, the football side can get better if we play our cards right. We must pull out all the stops to land BYU or Boise State. Even if that means tossing them some UConn exit money. We have to get the football side a bit stronger.

The AAC is a weird league though. Schools that are doing everything to advance. Some doing jack.

UConn was way over their head with major FBS football. They did NOTHING while in the AAC.

You also have to invest in basketball too.

I would rather have them here than not.....but to say a big loss is a little over the top since we have all learned that football drives the boat and always will. UConn has been the dregs of FBS football for a pretty long time now. I kept thinking they had to turn it around, but it never happened.

I am not throwing rocks............Memphis came oh so close many years ago to saying "the heck with football, we will never be any good, we are a basketball school only"....and there was murmurs of dropping football and resigning ourselves that we will only be good in basketball. Then, Big East---> AAC invite and the hire of Fuente. All it takes is one good hire and the boat can be turned around.

Going to the B.E. means you have given up any hope of bettering your overall program. If you can't be good in AAC basketball, what makes you think you are going to start "killing it" in the Big East? Slightly better exposure = better recruiting = better team in the long run? I guess. Basketball fan base is happier? The whole fanbase is basketball only?

Again, my preference would be for them to stay, but the UConn name doesn't hold the same weight it used to.

For those of us where football is king, no, it's not a big loss. It's not even relevant.

We are losing the consistently worst program in the conference whose fans and Admin care so little about football, they just decided to nuke their football program so that they can cling to past glory of a conference "called" the Big East.

Literally any program we choose to insert as #12 will have a better program and better commitment to football than UConn.

correct, on the football side, it is not a loss at all and they are EASILY replaced.

The problem is, basketball, which is a sport that anybody can win a natty, just took a major hit.

UCONN realized two things and acted on it:
1. Their football sucks, and that isn't changing.
2. Hoops in the AAC sucks, its seen as mid major and their brand was higher than the conference perception. So they moved to a conference that has a better perception. The Big East has a much better brand perception top to bottom than the AAC.
I don't blame them for the move.

Playing dregs of the Big East means St. Johns, Providence, Seton Hall, etc. Playing the dregs of the AAC means Tulsa, Tulane, ECU, and USF (last year aside).

the AAC dregs are low major on paper and just perception killers. St. Johns, Providence etc., while not 'big names' are bigger than our dregs. And its not even close.

So UCONN said football is rigged, our program is in a college football wasteland and the conference we are in has zero shot at they playoff , so screw it. Let's play to our strengths.

It was a great move for them and a MAJOR hit to our hoops.

RE: Goodbye, UConn!
Just looking at UConn football scheduling.....what exactly would be their plan for 2020?

Assuming they have to go out as an independent....how could they possibly fill 8 football games?

They currently have scheduled: UMass, at Illinois, Maine (FCS), Indiana

There are so few slots even left in 2020 they may have to offer 5 pay games and some FCS games and everyone would know they are in a bind so I am sure those contracts would be very one sided.

Ok, so be it. UCF earned an at large bid this year and it had absolutely nothing to do with UConn. We can surely find another high quality basketball school like we did with Wichita.

Football is far more important than CBB nationally and this will allow us to upgrade in football, so it's great for the AAC really.

this will only be true if a big name is added for football (think BYU or Boise). If all we do is back-fill with Georgia State, or Southern Miss, etc., though on the field they are better than UCONN, perception wise, it won't help in football and in hoops will even be more of an anchor.

The only way the AAC comes out of this half-way decent perception wise is to add a name football program and that is basically BYU or Boise and then a solid hoops add like VCU or Dayton.

That's it.
