Articles are being written as UConn being the biggest loser in realignment, fact is, realignment is driven by strength of football support, not basketball. I know there’s an argument for the ACC selecting Pitt over other former Big East football schools, but this is what happens when your football program is worse than Pitt’s (UConn) and poor fan behavior coupled with poor academics (WVU) allows school presidents to select other schools for expansion.

If I'm the AAC I boot their football program period. UConn boosts their basketball profile a bit, but their football is drag on revenue, attendance, and travel. If UConn makes this move, IMO it is only a matter of time before they cut football altogether.

RE: UConn moving back to Big East. Football to remain in FBS, just not in AAC.
To me that says all their inside sources are saying they have zero shot at joining the ACC or B1G now or in the near future (which may have other ramifications given how close we may be to another round of realignment. Do they know who those leagues WOULD be targeting instead or are they simply content with the status quo and no real moves are seen as likely) because trying to get membership in one of those P Leagues was the only reason they revived football to begin with.

If their info is telling them they’ve got no chance then why not focus on what your good at vs regional rivals in what is still a highly respected basketball power conference?

Yeah, I think it signals that the next round of realignment will be about absorbing one of the present P5 and that there will be no promotion of G5 schools period. And it may draw ire but the most logical conference to break up is the ACC. 14 of their schools could be easily placed.

Let's say that the SEC decided to close ranks in the deep South so we went to 16 with Clemson and Florida State. Let's also say that N.D. sees the handwriting on the wall for revenue so they depart to the Big 10 with Virginia.
Kansas, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State head to the PAC giving them a basketball brand, a football brand, 2 AAU schools and 4 CTZ slots to sell. (This happens with ESPN landing a larger share of the PAC rights)

Texas rebuilds the Big 12 (or ACC) into the Big 16:
Baylor, Kansas State, Texas, Texas Tech
Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest
Boston College, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia
Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, T.C.U. (3 are major air hubs).

No G5 promotion. Wake Forest is cut out. And we are at 64 and the two most difficult schools are in the same conference with their sycophantic groupies.

I could get into this SEC:
Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina
Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Mississippi State
Arkansas, Louisiana State, Mississippi, Texas A&M
Clemson, Missouri, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

B1G:
Maryland, Notre Dame, Penn State, Virginia
Indiana, Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers
Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern
Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin

PAC 16:
Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah
California, Cal Los Angeles, Southern Cal, Stanford
Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State

Another interesting aspect is this...does the Big East expand to 12?

If so then do they take another basketball school like Dayton or VCU? Or is it possible a school like Wake Forest could work?

The only reason I mention it is because if Wake moves on to a basketball league and relegates their football program then the ACC is free to expand their footprint.

That would be a blessing to the ACC. But I doubt Wake would voluntarily take that cut, even though it would make sense. We'll likely see a Magnolia Conference before we see that. Tulane, Vanderbilt, Duke, Miami, Wake Forest, Rice, S.M.U., Tulsa, with perhaps a few challenged state schools like Georgia Tech, Virginia, or maybe even the service academies.

They are beloved, they are academically oriented, and they can't afford the growing CFB arms race. At some point that makes sense. We're just not there yet.

If they could pull a big enough name then they’d certainly go to 12 (who wouldn’t make room for Duke if they suddenly decided to be a MBB only school?) but unless it’s a pretty seismic, offer you can’t refuse type school, I think they’d be happy to stay at 11 since that gives you a perfectly balanced 20 game conference schedule

Will Alabama go for these divisions minus Tennessee? Maybe we replace FSU with the Vols in that division?

With 4 divisions of 4 you can play everyone in your division (3 games) and 1 permanent rival from each of the other 3 divisions (3 games) and rotate 1 school from each of the remaining three schools in each division (3 games) so for the cost of a 9 game schedule you keep 6 schools on your annual schedule and rotate through the other 9 schools every 3 years if you complete the rotation before swapping the home and away.

So under that format Alabama would/could play annually: Auburn, F.S.U., and Miss State and have permanent rivals of Tennessee, L.S.U., and Kentucky. I think they could life with that.

It’s official now:

Brett McMurphy
@Brett_McMurphy
UConn will become an FBS independent in football & reaches agreement with American, will pay $17 million exit fee to leave league & join Big East In Olympic sports on July 1, 2020
10:57 AM · Jul 26, 2019·Twitter for iPhone

Good move for UConn as they temporarily boosted financial support to their football program in an effort to land a power five conference payday. The basketball side supposedly loves the move, the other side will have to adjust and align with future budgets.

Yukon's football is dead. They're going with... what they think... is a good move for their basketball.

If Villanova doesn't maintain their recent level of success, what have they got? Nobody else in that league is setting the BB world on fire.

Their football will hang around a couple of years and they will hope for the best. After continued losing, poor recruiting and finding that people will make room on their schedule to play Notre Dame... but not UConn... they'll either move down or drop it all together.

I love that SEC!!! Clemson is a very old rival of UGa, and when the NCAA went to 12 games, we renewed the Clemson series. Also, UGa competes with FSU a lot for recruits, so that's another reason I like it!!

Grasping for the past. But Pitt, 'Cuse, BC, L'ville, WVU, Cincy & ND, are not there. And they leave Temple from the AAC.

Late season fb scheduling will be tough. Women's bb was doing great in the AAC.

P5 expansion, unfortunately, was not kind to UConn.
The ACC, with selfish BC, shut UConn, and a couple of others, out.

What goes around comes around. If we do move to a P4 then eventually B.C. will be on the outside looking in like about 4 possibly 8 other schools who are presently in.

BC wasn't the only selfish one- Pitt had a hand in shutting out UConn too. But I am sure karma will come around to bite Pitt in the butt.

I think they'll be fine

2 high level P5 buy games a year. Hopefully 1-2 lower level P5 home and homes. A few G5 homes and homes. Fill out the rest with NMSU/Liberty/Army/UMAss and random FCS games. Once they are stable in a few years you could see a schedule that looks like this:

Purdue
@Ohio State (Buy game)
FAU
@Rutgers
@Ga State
Wake Forest
@NMSU
@Army
Liberty
URI
@FSU (buy game)
UMass

Syracuse appears to be contributing to ACC success moreso than Pitt and BC. The Syracuse football team is predicted to finish as high as second or third this season by some respected prognosticators.

Yeah, Syracuse is one of the few teams from the Northeast that I don't have a problem with. Syracuse even scheduled Uconn for a couple of football & basketball games.
