Wish we had them in Atlanta. Hope the product doesn’t change with the sale of the company.

The company that bought them owns Krispy Kreme and Panera Bread. I don't think they will mess it up, they have done well with those two.

I'm not sure if whataburger left Memphis before you could eat there but whataburger should be declared the national chain hamburger.

I think the thing I liked about their burgers the most was that they chopped the lettuce and it seemed as if they mixed it with mustard. I hate lettuce leaves.

That company is headquartered in Charlotte. This area ironically has a (small) restaurant chain also called what a burger. The two chains started at roughly the same time (same year I believe), completely unaware of the other. The chain here never got very big and they only have a handful of restaurants. They have an agreement that allows the what a burgers here to keep their name, but they are not allowed to expand outside of this area

Correction, BDT bought Whataburger. They hold minority stakes in Krispy Kreme and Panera, which are majority owned by JAB holdings, so I'm incorrect about Whataburger's new owners being Charlotte based.

In their effort to expand the chain, they will compromise the culture of the brand. You cannot be a Texas brand, when you are owned by an out of state corporation. In fact the majority of loyal Whataburger customers feel the same way. You should look at their social media since the news broke. I'm sure the family made a ton of money, but they betrayed the people of Texas to get it.

If anyone thought they could have bought out Chik Fil A, they would have already done it. It generates the highest store per store revenue in the country (despite being closed on Sunday) and has the best franchise system in existence.

well, I'm hoping this means the Whataburger expansion into Southaven and Olive Branch finally happens...

that said, I like Back Yard Burger and Popeye's personally.

I used to. The last BYB at which I ate was nasty and so was the food. I can still do Popeye's but they seem to have lost something lately too.

This is what happened to my company recently. The previous owner inherited it from his father and grew the company. He said he had to sell it because his kids didn't want it and they were not capable of running the company anyway.

I frequent the Germantown BYB (West Street), Collierville BYB (Houston Levee/Poplar), and the one by my job at Whitten and I40...those seem to be pretty well run IMHO.

I usssseeeedd to love Whataburger but when other fast food chains started moving into EP I lost the taste for them. About a year ago I bough a green chile burger from there and I was disappointed. It didn't have much taste. I'm more into Carl Jrs now and I always love the burgers, never been disappointed...yet. I tried In and Out while traveling to Arizona and we wanted to try it (my wife mostly) so much so that I had to traverse 3 lanes just to get to the exit ramp in Tucson. Both of us were very disappointed and realized it was all hype. They weren't what we expected and both of us said that Carl Jrs were better, our favorite is FamousStar with cheese which are on sale right now for 2 for $5. We usually put Chiles Curtidos from the can or avocados, or both.

One family owned company I was in got bought by a larger public company. The president of the larger company was in charge. But our owner got millions in cash, became the largest shareholder of the larger company and chairman of the board. And of course, those shares were now liquid instead of being closely held and difficult to sell. Sometimes its just cashing in and diversifying.

This view is very strange on so many levels, unless you're a socialist who believes the efforts of the individual are owned by the collective.

1. compromise the culture - a double assumption that it will happen and that the existing culture represents the pinnacle.

2. You can not be a Texas brand - limiting and narcissistic.

3. the fact the majority - haven't seen the polls to support this. If you have heard from the "majority" it must mean the customer base is very small.

4. social media - you mean the vocal minority?

5. betrayed the people of Texas - don't even know what to say here. That's pure projection of your personal feelings and that of a few posters on social media. Get back to me when you have 20+million posts supporting this sentiment.

Look, I respect the state of Texas for a lot of things, and their general view of personal responsibility and independence, but feeling the state or its people are betrayed by corporate M&A activity is over the top.

Well it happened with banking. Texas lost its banks in the 80s. Only one of the top 10 survived as an independent bank. That has handicapped business development and venture capital.
