The most highly sought after commencement speaker in the U.S.

Billionaire Robert Smith just pledged to pay off the student debts of every member of Morehouse College's Class of 2019. That's about $70 million in debt, according to some estimates.

Article I read says $40 million. Nice gesture and will really help if those students all donate back to the school for scholarships.

I have no problem with this. If he’s got the dough and wants spend it this way rather than blowing it gambling or on hookers or whatever, then fine
I’d suggest THIS is the way it should work. Not through inefficient big gubment confiscation and redistribution.

Enough folks step up in some form or fashion similar to this and maybe the rush off the socialism cliff can be forestalled or perhaps even reversed.

Course there is also the risk that this guy goes to give a speech, anywhere, people are gonna expect something “free”, or that the students didn’t learn anything about racking up millions in debt on that general studies or whatever degree.

You're right. The article I linked said $40 million ($70,000 for one student quoted so maybe that's where I got that number from?). They have about 2200 students so maybe a graduating class of 400 or so? Obviously it would be a lot more with a bigger school.

It's also all-male. I wonder how long until someone claims gender discrimination?

Exactly, he just basically made a one year set of scholarships for the school... I have no problems with this.

Now that being said, look for socialists to climb on the "see, he paid for it... why can't the rest of the 1%'ers" tree

My guess is that if he can do that then he isn't exactly worried about pissing away the money.

I'm not one to tell people how to spend their money. He also left it out of his speech that he sent the school for approval.

And this is a MUCH better solution than making the American tax payer pick up the tab.
