Just say Sawyer Smith is transferring from Troy to finish off his last year of eligibility as a grad transfer at Kentucky. How's Barker's health? How do most Troy fans feel about Smith leaving and is there anyone else that seems like they may have a chance to start?

During the spring, Sawyer asked head coach Chip Lindsey if he would be the starter in the fall, and Chip told him he could not give him a definitive answer. Most feel like Kaleb Barker was the better QB, and Chip probably does as well, if I had to guess. Sawyer probably saw the writing on the wall. He is a great QB, but right now, it's a mad house with QB talent at Troy.
The guys beneath Kaleb are impressive, both in practice and on paper. The talent is there behind Kaleb, the question is one of experience. We are 100% green behind Kaleb if he gets hurt again. He will be 100% by fall camp assuming he doesn't re-injure himself.
EDIT: actually third string QB Gunnar Watson did play some drives last season. I know he played vs Liberty for sure, and did a decent job.

+ we have Jacob Free now (Vandy transfer)
Losing Sawyer might hurt us. If Barker goes down again, we won’t have any experienced QBs left.

RE: Sawyer Smith
I concur. Kaleb has more upside. His running ability and speed is the big factor.
Take into account that up until he got injured, he was 5-1 with a win over Nebraska, 73% completion percentage, 1,000 pass yards, 10 TD's, 2 INT's, and 260 yards rushing with 3 TD's.
It could be a mess though if he gets injured. Both of the backups are talented, just little to no experience. Gunnar Watson is possibly the future, but Jacob Free is a big, talented QB who was Vanderbilt's top recruit in 2017. He was ranked the #20 pro-style QB in the nation.

I wonder why Levi didn't explain to the QBs how he got his shot at starting before he left...

Touche'...I don't think it's exactly the same, but I see your point. I think that Minshew would be a more apt example of your response.

Still can't believe we had a Heisman-caliber QB slip through our fingers. Then again, Silvers may have been a Heismam finalist too if he had played for a pass-heavy P5.

Not buying any of that. Kid got a real P5 offer to play. End of story.

He will not play at UK. Wilson-their starter from last year(10 wins) is back and in full control of the position. Only way would be a significant injury.

RE: Sawyer Smith
Sawyer may have simply wanted to attend grad school at a different University. He most likely could have been persuaded by being the starter at Troy for his Senior season, but new coach could not guarantee that.
Experience at QB is vital for any program. I know there's many questions at Southern with the lack of experience behind QB Werts. It wasn't pretty when the backups were brought in for a few snaps the past few seasons.

Don't you think Watson would be the guy if Barker goes down? I saw him play in high school and that Liberty game and I think he's going to very good at some point. Free washed out of Vandy and was only OK in his year at Northwest Mississippi CC.

It’s the Internet. The only thing 100% factual in this thread is that Sawyer will be attending Kentucky. Quite a few Troy ties in the Bluegrass state.

Barker was much better than Smith in the games that I saw. There really was no comparison or push on any facet of their games.

I think it's fairly obvious though at this point that one reason Smith utilized his grad transfer to attempt to get more playing time.
It was mentioned on our board... do you think Sawyer Smith would've transferred if he would've been told he was going to likely be the #1 QB?

The QB room is still filled with capable bodies. I was one that pulled for Sawyer over Barker, but the program isn't going to collapse without him. I wish him well on his new journey. Next man up.
