He might be able to recruit better players to UCLA.

The name on the door is one thing, and, maybe the only thing a constant there, other than the shadow of Wooden.

Problem is, UCLA isn’t getting the studs, and maybe that’s because obnoxious fans, boosters, and administrators are visible enough in an era of social media and transparency to know that the conga line in and out of LA is one recruits should avoid. Because those other stakeholders are too present in the overall operation.

You’re going to see him do the exact thing out there as he did in Cincy, making a tournament and then a quick exit. He’ll lose his job for it, no matter his consistency just getting there. UCLA may just be the WORST blue blood job in D1.

Sad for Cincy, unless some of their fans and boosters were getting fatigued by his quick exits, too.

In five years under Alford, UCLA had seven first round picks and four 2nd round picks (2014-2018). There has been plenty of talent coming through the doors. The coaching talent has not quite lived up to expectations. Alford's teams did not play defense and they lacked the mental and physical toughness that other teams had. Cronin will have plenty of talent to work with. His challenge is getting the team to play defense and making them tougher and smarter.

That's right. They've been bringing in almost as much talent as Kentucky and will probably continue to do so. What has been missing is a coaching staff that coaches the team and manages the program as well as Calipari's staff.

.Northern Kentucky Norse head coach John Brannen is the Cincinnati Bearcats' choice to replace Mick Cronin and fill UC's head coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports.

CBS Sports' Gary Parrish was the first to report Sunday afternoon via Twitter that Brannen has emerged as the favorite for the UC job. The Enquirer's John Fay had reported earlier this weekend that Brannen was among two frontrunners.

The 45-year-old Brannen, an Alexandria native and Newport Central Catholic graduate, has been NKU's head coach since 2015. In just four seasons, Brannen helped the Norse from a 9-21 record in his first year to 26-9 this past season, in addition to two NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT appearance.

He won't have to move or sell his house, good for him.

Is Chris Beard off the market? So many writers and posters said Chris was gone.

I'd be shocked if he left the state of Texas. He's spent almost his whole life there.

He's coached at 10 (!) different schools. Only 1 was outside of Texas (his first D-1 head coaching job at Arkansas-Little Rock).

I agree with you, UCLA is more talent loaded year after year than schools like Virginia and Michigan State. They simple have not had a coaching staff to deliver final four runs. Part of the issue I think for them, and the P12 in general, has not been the very top talent, even lottery talent, which the NBA drools over, but the depth players that fill out the rotation. Cronin, although he was not the first pick, may actually have been the best choice with Bennett staying at Virginia (that surprised me because UCLA was offering double his salary even with a raise ... but hey $115K/year is upper class in the USA, but it's $420K to make that threshold in the SF Bay Area and LA is not that much lower - so it's all relative). Cronin has tough teams loaded with the type of depth player a couple lottery picks can ride to deep runs in the tournament.

I give this hire two thumbs up. UCLA will be contending again. The P12 really needs them too.

I don’t think this is a good fit. Porter needs to be at a mid-major school where expectations are a breakout season every 4 years. He’s not building a year-to-year program which is what St John’s would expect.

Wow. St. John's must be really desperate.

Moser has been to 1 NCAA tournament in 15 years as a D-1 head coach. He was fired from Illinois State in 2007 after 4 dismal years.

No way they hire him. That would be a complete and utter embarrassment. Not gonna happen.

St. John's should look into Mike Lonergan. The guy can recruit and coach.

I don’t understand why every minute detail of SJU’s coaching search has been leaked to the public.

He actually was head coach at Fort Scott CC in Kansas and Seminole State (junior) College in Oklahoma before he was hired by Bob Knight at Tech. But yeah, he's a Texas guy, and has coached all over Texas: Texas (alma mater), Incarnate Word (assistant when they were D-II), Abilene Christian (assistant when they were D-II), North Texas (assistant), Texas Tech (assistant), McMurry, and Angelo State. He's coached at two of the three schools in Abilene! He's definitely ridden a lot of buses and has driven some vans. He has moved up the ladder, for sure. Four years ago, he was coaching the Angelo State Rams.

I think he stays at Tech at least one more year. I think he really does like it there, and it would take a lot to get him to leave. But, when the Longhorns and Shaka Smart eventually part ways, UT will back up the Brinks truck and bring him back to Austin.

You're right about that. It seems pretty dysfunctional. They're going to scare away some good candidates who don't want to wade into that swamp...something better will (usually) come around next year.

Looks like Cluess' buyout was too much. It's a shame, he is the best fit for that job with his NYC ties.

sounds like Moser might turn down St John's.

UCLA may have a rival for most bungled coaching search of the season.
