If we get 2 or 3 of those guys, we are going to be loaded with talent, but probably the youngest team in college basketball. Harris, Lomax and Lance Thomas will be sophs, Maurice will be a senior. The other 9 will be freshmen or redshirt freshmen (Boyce, Wingett, Hardaway). And Hardaway and/or Boyce will likely be walk-ons.
To your point, I think with Baugh, Boyce, Dandridge, etc., Penny realizes you can't do this only with one and dones, unless you get an unreal class. Cal has had the #1 or #2 class ever since he went to UK in 2009, yet he has only won it all once. But he is in the Elite 8 half the time or better.
I would take that.
If he can learn to build with great and not elite talent, it will be a huge step for you guys. The next couple years should be good, but Memphis now looks to be one of the teams that will get impacted by the potential end of the one and done rule in 2 years or so. Hopefully he will build up enough steam to remain through that. As you stated, getting One and Dones or 5 stars doesn't mean you will be winning a natty. It's been the more seasoned veterans each of the last 3-4 years that have won or competed for it.
Yeah, just as we get a coach who can actually pull in OADs, they do away with it. But Penny will be in the hunt for the top available talent, so I don't see much difference, other than you have to build talent over years. He has already started doing that with Lomax, Harris, Thomas, Dandridge, Baugh, Boyce, Wingett, and next year, Murrell, at least. Plus, we will likely get Jalen Green, if Miller stays, for sure.
The recruiting base in Memphis certainly gives us a leg up on that process, now that we have a coach who can actually sign Memphis guys.
You just had Calipari lmao?
Calipari left 10 years ago. No one and dones for us since then.
Exactly lmao that’s not a lifetime of no one and dones there’s like 5 coaches who could pull them wherever they go and you just had one. I think Memphis will be just fine when they change the rule.

Well, it ain't Wichita, so it's funny that a Wichita fan would be ragging on an AAC basketball school about it not being football.

You could handicap UC with Penny as a head coach and they would still beat Memphis.

Yeah, that 2008 NC team Cal built here in Memphis, they were all mostly a roster of 3-4year players from Prep School that got us to the Elite Eight two years in a row (excluding OAD Shawn Williams). It was the addition of the OAD Derrick Rose he introduced to that experienced core that carried us to the NC in 2008.
He perfected the OAD recruiting model here at Memphis, and KY has basically been an experiment ever since with all the resources available at his fingertips there.

Recruiting classes never win titles or guarantee a lot. Though it is good news for Memphis that they could be headed back to being a possible tournament team if all goes well.
