They already brand their sports that way. They want to change the name of the school itself. I don't think ULL was even trying to do that, they just wanted to brand their sports Louisiana, which for you geographically challenged folks is the name of the state they share with many other state schools. If they had put Lafayette on their jerseys instead of Louisiana I don't think anybody outside of Pennsylvania would have cared.

Simplest way for a legal name change is for the Board of Trustees to approve it, then the UNC System Board of Governors, then the state legislature to pass it, probably as part of the next annual system budget.

There's the quicker branding name change though, where the name could remain the same legally but everything is rebranded University of Charlotte. That would be the same as Virginia Politechnical and State University does. All that requires is the BoT to approve.

My Junior and Senior year in school we held up "You just got beat by Appalachian State Teachers College" signs in the 4th quarter at every football game (because we didn't lose at home for a 4 year period so we never "not" needed the sign).
