Where does Generation X fit in with college sports??
I’ve heard a lot about how well the baby boomers supported good ‘ole state u, and I’ve heard a lot about how the millennials just don’t really care as much about college sports as the baby boomers do. But lost in the discussion for me is Generation X, the generation that raised the millennials and probably the one that they despise the most. How do you guys/gals view Generation X??

Millennial’s don’t hate GenX. Most complaints are directed towards Baby Boomers.

Millennials and Baby Boomers are the ones that don't get along usually. Gen Xers are usually the ones sitting at the dinner table between their parents and their kids while they argue back and forth about whether or not rap should be legal.

Not really sure on your original question, but just for a point of clarification it was the Baby Boomers who mostly raised Millennials. Usually parents/children skip a generation in the middle.

Boomers were born 1945-early 60s and would have had kids in the 70s-90s. Only the oldest Gen Xers would've had kids in the (late) 90s. Gen X mostly had Gen Z kids (post 2000).

Source: was born in 1991, my parents were born in 55-56 and all my friends parents were basically born in the late 50s early 60s.

Gen Xers are the ones who are keeping the millennials and baby boomers in check.

I was born in 1978 so I was one of the last Gen Xers. We have more in common with older millennials than older Gen Xers. Those born between 1977 and 1983 are usually called Xennials because we don’t fit either generation.

Baby Boomers are going to be retired, sitting in a warm state, watching games on TV and complaining about cable prices.

Gen Xers will be sitting in half empty stadiums complaining about ticket prices.

Millenials will be checking their smart watches for scores because they can't watch an entire game.

My oldest brother is in Gen X and has the only smartwatch of the family. As an older millenial, I can tell you it's extremely easy to watch an entire game (and multiple games in a row if it's a good time of year).

And there goes my post to destroy your entire hypothesis. Or something. Clearly anecdotal evidence solves all problems.

I can never keep those labels for generations straight.

My kids were born early 2000s, if that's Generation Z, then that's the generation that sports team owners and college ADs should be concerned about. Forget about getting them to sit through anything as long as a football game (whether in person or on TV), and if you want them to even know who won a game you probably need to put the result in their Instagram or Snapchat feed. And I doubt that will change as the generation gets older.

Gen X will be the last to actually go watch college football in person. Millenials are either too poor to afford the game day experience or they are apathetic and too glued to their smart phones to watch.

Unfortunately, I think overall interest in college football is heading for a slump as the boomers get too old to go to games and write donation checks. It will remain strong in the south and parts of the Midwest.

Millenials aren't even in college anymore or very few remain. They are in the workforce now. It's on to Generation Z now.

RE: Where does Generation X fit in with college sports??
I just sat through a week of this in management strategies training. These generations stagger at about a 15 to 18 year range. The thing with the Boomers is with the oldest ones in their 70s, many aren’t prepared to or want to retire. They still work, have living parents, and have disposable income from their second careers. Advertisers may say they want younger eyes but the Boomers still control the money and may be the last generation as a whole to be much more financially successful than the generation prior to them. Their heroes were the icons like JFK, MLK, the Beatles, Elvis, Mickey Mantle, Johnny U, etc. They grew up with team sports. “Let’s get together and discuss.” In terms of donation money they matter tremendously.
Generation X were the latchkey kids, TV watchers. Most had both parents in the workforce. Our heroes were either non existent, non traditional, or dictated by the media. We tend to be more independent. “Send me an email”. We make good money, we like sporting events, but are more prone to self preservation so we spend differently.
Millennials were largely raised by Boomers. They overcompensate for having worked so much that they overindulged with this generation. Participation Awards. If they attend events it’s because the tickets were given. “Text me.” The independent ones income goes towards necessities. The others have different interests beyond traditional sporting events.
Gen Z is beginning to graduate college. You wanna know why attendance in college sports is down? Ask a teenager to put down their cell phone. More eyes are on screens than watching any event they are attending. True. Why pay for something you can watch for “free”?

Yes early 2000s would be Gen Z.

People make this mistake a lot, usually in jokes or something online about Millenials in high school or something, but millenials are the ones in their 20s and 30s

They are not in the work force, they are in mommy's basement, living off the last couple of years free insurance from daddy's policy. Protesting for a big socialist gov't to keep the free ride coming..

From what I've seen....

Boomers love their sports and their sports teams.

Xers love their sports too. They love their teams, but I think they tend to be more diverse in what and who they root for based on the athletes. For example, I wasn't a huge NBA fan or a Bulls fan, but Jordan is my all time favorite athlete. I watched games and cheered for "Da Bulls" BECAUSE of Jordan, not because I loved the team or sport. We were the first generation to have personalities marketed to us as much or more than teams. We were the first to start living in the ESPN world where sports were covered 24/7. I think the same holds true for college sports as well. I never gave a hoot about OU football, but I started watching and rooting for them because of "The Boz". Opposite for Duke basketball, never gave a hoot, but HATED Christian Laettner.

As far as Millennials, it's more of a "cheer if convenient" attitude. As long as it doesn't interfere with playing Call of Duty or virtue signaling on twitter or drinking organic/non-GMO/gluten free craft beer, they might watch....

What happened to all those Boomers that were hippies in the 60’s/70’s?

Oh I know, they got a job, made money, and now have season tickets to their school’s football team.

People change.

Depends on whose definition you use. The traditional students in college now were born between around 1995-2000, which is near the line of millennials/Gen Z. Most students older than that would be millennials.
