Wrestling with the AD
The MAC is going forward and we're falling back. SEVEN schools just joined the conference for wrestling making it the second largest conference.

Wrestling had a fine season last year that included one All-American. The incoming class was excellent. Our brilliant AD cut the program and published phoney numbers about how much wrestling cost.

One day we're going to have to face reality that our football is not our strength, not since we went Div I.

Which completely the ignores the fact that EMU offered more total sports than any other MAC school for years. The cutback put us on par with the rest of the MAC in terms of total sports offered. Next.

Most of the wrestling teams in the "MAC" are not full-time conference schools. They are only joining the conference because there are no other places for them to go. While it might give the illusion that wrestling is a growing sport, the opposite is true.

RE: Wrestling with the AD
I'm thinking fans, students, and faculty would have been lining up for their season wrestling tickets with these powerhouses added to the conference!

Bloomsburg
Clarion
Edinboro
Lock Haven
Rider
George Mason
Cleveland State

and don't forget the BIG addition of SIU Edwardsville in 2018.

Sorry the wrestlers lost their program, but I'm assuming most, if not all, have landed squarely on their feet. Wrestlers are a tough bunch, unlike our resident whiner.

There’s only 5 full time MAC wrestling teams... let’s not act like this is something EMU is missing out on. No new MAC institutions have even added a team

RE: Wrestling with the AD
Since going division I over 40 years ago, football has never been our best program. Even in the brief Harkema days we had programs that were stronger.

Other programs have produced individual national champions and All-Americans. Olympians. They've had regionally competitive teams, even nationally competitive teams. They've produced many MAC champions, individuals and teams.

We're killing what what we do well to emphasize what we don't do well.

As for these schools joining MAC wrestling, most, perhaps all, compete at a higher level than MAC football.

Lets please not pretend that wrestling was a powerhouse here in ypsilanti. Sure, they have had some success the past couple years.... but other than that, not much.

Dear Friends,
I agree with easterneagles79. I don't know if Eastern ever won a MAC Championship in wrestling, but we have had individual champions in various weight classes through the years. So, yes we have not been a wrestling powerhouse.

I wonder if you understand how college sports other than football work. There are plenty of outstanding Div I athletic teams that are not football powers. Minnesota-Duluth, not the big ten school, is the reigning hockey champion. Coastal Carolina won the College World Series three years ago. Northern Arizona is the three time defending champion in cross country. Villanova has a recent basketball championship.

Of all people you should know not to make fun of schools. I'm sure your son had to put up with a few snickers when he accepted a scholarship to EMU. I doubt you lyfao about that.

True. I think only one championship. MAC Wrestling competes at a higher level than football. A few years ago we beat MSU 31-0, an almost unheard of pounding. I think it was last year we beat nationally ranked Stanford.

Let's not forget that swimming and diving was also cut with their dozens of championships. The league meet was held this past weekend at Miami. The home team won the championship. It was moved there when we dropped the sport.

Dropping wrestling was bad enough. Dropping swimming was unbelievably stupid. The transient administrators seem to hate success.

Thankfully, one of his best qualities is that he doesn't worry about the naysayers, and what other people think.

If he would have listened to folks like yourself, he most definitely wouldn't have gone to EMU. Fortunately, he believed in himself, and had a positive vision of how he might help make EMU football a better program.

Upon his commitment, to the outside world, there was no realistic reason to believe EMU football would ever go to a bowl game, or that an unknown 2 star recruit had even the slightest chance to play in the NFL one day.

With no guarantees or promises, the odds stacked against them, the football world laughing, an unfair playing field to conquer, and their own fans & alumni taking shots.........the coaches, players, and staff have overcome ALL OF THAT to make all real EMU football fans proud of a legitimate program on the rise.

YOU, of all people, should soak in the life lessons from this team. Keep watching, stop talking nonsense and bashing, and enjoy the ride instead of hating.

A little something that made me think of you and Wickersham...........

Certainly i would not discouraged someone from going to EMU. I hope your son fulfills his dream of playing in the NFL, and if he doesn't make it there, then that he is successful in whatever he does.

EMU 's athletic strength, at least in Div I, has never been football and it never will be, not for an extended time anyway. There are simply too many obstacles. But we can be successful from time to time. By successful i mean one of the top two teams in the league. That's within our reach.

Making changes to the infrastructure will not improve our long term success in the conference. At best, it's trying to keep up with the competition.

Dropping sports will not help football. This is not the first time we dropped sports and the football program did not get one bit better.
