Florida-Miami in week zero?
If the NCAA grants a waiver for this, it essentially means they are changing the "week zero" rule from "only teams playing in Hawai'i that season" to "only teams playing in Hawai'i that season plus whichever games ESPN wants to move to that weekend".

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/f...story.html
Quote:The Florida Gators versus Miami Hurricanes 2019 season opener could be moved up a week to Aug. 24, a source told the Orlando Sentinel.

The game is slated for Aug. 31 at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, but the date change would better showcase the first matchup between the long-standing rivals since 2013. It also would mark the earliest start to the football season for either school.

Before the move can happen, however, the NCAA would have to approve it. A decision is expected soon.

The schools say it was all ESPN's idea.

RE: Florida-Miami in week zero?
I don't see why it couldn't be an option except that it provides both schools with an additional bye week which may be frowned upon by other schools. The benefit to the Hawaii Rule is to allow schools to schedule a 13th game to cover the expenses of the trip to Hawaii. Schools can opt for an additional bye week but that is their choice.

To run with the idea of moving the schedule up a week, could we see a quarterfinal round added to the CFP or a semifinal round to conference playoffs?

2019 is already a season with two off weeks for every FBS team except Hawai'i, who is playing 13 games and has one, Army who has three, and Navy, who will have four off weeks if they aren't in the AAC title game.

If the NCAA permits this game to move to August 24, Miami and Florida will each have three off weeks in 2019.

It makes too much sense to move the season up a week.

For ESPN's interests, they get an extra week of broadcast windows during a time of year when all they compete with is baseball.

The teams get the extra off week and greater flexibility to schedule the match-ups they want.

Letting every team play that week makes sense. That would give teams two off weeks in every season, not just once or twice every six years.

I understand they are couching this request as special "just for the 150th anniversary season"?

And here we thought thirteen games was impossible because the NCAA has rules against it for all but those going out to Hawaii...

I mean, this overshoots it big time by just requesting it, but, after last year with these weather events, there needs to be more room for some of these programs to recoup losses if a storm prohibits play. CCG weekend is one way...week zero should be another.

This isn't a thirteenth game, it was one of twelve already scheduled for both teams this season. They are just asking permission to play it in "Week Zero" instead of Week One.

I can't see how having a bye week in Week 1 gives these two teams any particular advantage. An additional week later in the season, perhaps. But does Florida really benefit from having an extra week to prepare for UT-Martin? That's a stretch.

Think beyond this particular case. If you lay down the precedent that week zero isn’t as sacred as it currently stands, this is your loophole and possible throughway to thirteen.

Week zero’s exclusivity is going down.

Wow. I hadn't looked at it that way. It also could result in defenses being allowed to use brass knuckles and billy clubs too!

There is absolutely no way that this is going to lead to a 13th game added to the schedule beyond what is already on the books.

Nope, not going to 13. But what the networks are pushing for is better ratings on that last weekend of August instead of schmuck filler. The coaches will go for this too. Spreading out 12 is healthier for everyone. With playoffs a part of our future there won't be a 13th regular season game. At least not until we all play a 12 game schedule against P conferences only and then the 13th may become a preseason game against a G5 or FCS opponent and take the place the of the Spring game. That way all P schools will be guaranteed 7 home games for the season ticket book.

From the networks' perspective, they have more content than can be reasonably shown in any given week. Plenty of games available to spread them out a little more and not lose viewers.

So that means they still pay for the same amount of games while simultaneously increasing the frequency with which they have a captive audience.

Same expenses + more opportunities to sell ads = more money

Stanford and Rice received this waiver two years ago for a week 0 game in Australia.

And yes, as it turned out, the game would not have been playable on its originally scheduled week 1 slot in Houston due to the Hurricane.

It’s fine. The pursuit of thirteen has been something discussed by school presidents and conference commissioners for some time, and the need for it has been all but used as a scapegoat for any number of series suspensions and other scheduling maneuvers this decade.

This is bigger than you give credit for because it’s simply not done. It WILL be nothing if it’s rejected, but allowing an exception beyond Hawaii once is the sort of precedence to reapproach it again down the line for other reasons. I don’t believe thirteen games is THE next thing. I believe eliminating the exclusivity of week zero for whatever reason is a HUGE step. I personally think the weather risks and makeups that subtract from the benefit of the CCG weekend could be diminished by relieving the grip of week zero into a less conditional new week one. And down the road, maybe even way down that road, that next milestone comes from it.

I just think it’s funny that the same NCAA who can’t get anything right is going to always resist something most of the power brokers in FBS want anyway. Like, people believe the NCAA has deep integrity at its core anymore? And, we all see that one special team gets something nobody else does, right? Yeesh.

If that were the case then we would be playing 13 games because, and I'm guessing by your thought process you weren't aware of this, the NCAA isn't some independent organization...it's the actual schools themselves. If a majority of schools choose to play 13 games then there is absolutely nothing the "NCAA" could do to stop it because the schools ARE the NCAA.

As for school presidents and/or conferences pushing for a 13th game...go head and give us some links on that. As it stands I've only heard of one school even mention a 13th game without Hawaii and that was Notre Dame.

RE: Florida-Miami in week zero?
Eight schools had an opportunity to schedule a 13th game this year due to the Hawaii exemption, and seven of them passed on it. Only Army (which gets to stretch its season longer into December because of the Army-Navy game) scheduled a 13th. That tells me there isn't much clamor coming from the member schools for a 13 game regular season[/u].

That being said, starting a week sooner (that is, making week zero be week 1) makes a lot of sense for a lot of stakeholders. Especially the stakeholders that are paying the bills.

Army and Navy don't get an extended season. Anyone can play on the second Saturday in December, as that is the last weekend of the regular season as defined by the NCAA.

At the least, they *effectively* get an extended season, because no one else wants to schedule games after the CCGs.

But, if that Saturday is available to everyone, maybe the CCGs should move to that weekend so that everyone has an extra week in which to play the regular season.

I imagine that week is considered off limits because that's around the time most schools are conducting exams.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that week was indeed off limits to everyone but Army/Navy. I thought they were given an exception?
