RE: Official Game Thread: The Citadel
The Citadel (3-9 SoCon, 11-12 overall) #228 in Kenpom

The #1 scoring team in D1 out of conference at 100.9 has dropped to only 73.4 ppg in conference as conference foes are much better prepared for Duggar Baucom's approach to offense. Unfortunately, their scoring defense has not improved – it’s still at 85.2, second worst in D1 on the season. 3pt% has dropped from .367 OOC to .294 in conference. That's dead last in the SoCon. Although they still fire them up, ranking 2nd in D1 in 3 pointers made at 12.0 per game, and 2nd in attempts.

Despite it all, the Bulldogs still managed to knock off Mercer in Macon on Saturday 67-61, and didn’t even have to go to overtime to do it, unlike the Bucs at Macon.

Citadel does not match up well against the Bucs. But if we show up listless and demoralized, like we did against Furman, anything can happen. They beat us at Freedom Hall last year. This time Kenpom favors the Bucs by 15 at home.

Stats are conference play only

Guards:
#13 6-1 200 Gr-Tr Lew Stallworth; 34.4 minutes, 20.3 ppg on .341 from 3 (1.2 makes), 4.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 3.6 t.o.’s, 1.0 steals
#03 6-2 160 Sr Matt Frierson; 32.0 minutes, 8.2 ppg on .297 from 3 (2.4 makes per game), 1.1 steals
#12 6-4 190 Gr-Tr Connor Kern; 23.0 minutes, 5.7 ppg on .278 from 3 (0.9 makes)
#02 5-11 170 Sr Quayson Williams; 12.4 minutes, 3.1 ppg on .222 from 3 (0.3 makes), 1.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists
#23 6-4 220 Jr Kaelon Harris; (played 4 of 12 games) 9.5 minutes, 1.5 ppg, no 3s in conference (4 all year), 2.8 rebounds

Front Court:
#34 6-7 220 Sr Zane Najdawi, 31.0 minutes, 13.1 ppg on .302 from 3 (1.1 makes), 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 1.2 steals
#33 6-6 215 So Hayden Brown, (6 of 12 games) 21.1 minutes 8.3 ppg on .344 from 3 (1.1 makes), 5.7 rebounds
#11 6-6 185 So Kaiden Rice, 22.1 minutes, 8.3 ppg on .257 from 3 (1.5 makes), 2.9 rebounds
#25 6-5 210 So Alex Reed, 16.3 minutes, 5.8 ppg on .370 from 3 (0.8 makes), 3.3 rebounds

I have no doubt they will respond. The question for me is, how long will they play with a fire under them? That seems to be an on-going issue with them.

The games acquire more importance as we get deeper into this year. So if we are motivated from within it will show. Most of our teams thru the years have always had Heart. This one is not quite there yet or I haven't seen it (from a distance). So I hope it shows up soon. Go Bucs !

We are faltering down the stretch. Honestly, we mighy fall short of the SoCon championship.

We are already underdogs to make the Championship anyway, It is Wofford and UNC-g's game or to blow it.

Thinking the same thing. Just making the championship game this year would be huge

It's truly shocking to watch an ETSU game come down to the wire against the Citadel - a school whose last significant win came in the Battle of Fredericksburg.

For the entirety of the first half this team looked totally apathetic. It was like an intramural team who just hates playing with eachother. Forbes was incredibly animated in the first half, trying to lead the horse to water.

For a coach who has railed his guards for launching threes before testing the inside, he seemed more than willing to let it go on again this game. Every game from now on is totally up in the air.

The positive thing about the game that I saw was that we played like that last year and lost to them. Today we had enough to beat them, barely, but we still won.

Continuing the fog from the Furman game, a look-out defensive scheme was well executed on the perimeter in the first half. First 8 minutes of the 2nd half saw a marked improvement. Still questioning fatigue as the reason some folks just can't seem to defend well, look likes some folks have lost a half a step lately.

Game notes:

Tisdale was da man tonight, altho Mr. Bo was pretty manly his own bad self. One error by the stats guys, and Birchfield's article: Tisdale had a 30-pt. game for Vincennes at Wabash Valley just over a year ago, so his 29 tonight isn't truly a "career high". If the modifier "ETSU" were added, then ok, but in the real world, one's juco career is considered part of one's "career".

Once yet again, an opponent has a season high - this time Najdawi, who matched Tisdale's 29, but didn't get equal billing in the accounts from this area. Which is ok, as Tisdale was a more complete and valuable difference-maker in this game.

Somewhere in LA, murry bartow is wistfully grimacing, as someone else gets another 20-win season at ETSU (altho only 18 of them really count).

While we blistered the nets from the stripe at 67%, without Williamson and Tisdale going 10/10, the rest of the team was 6/14. Take out Jeromy's 2/2, and the rest of the team (which is only Armus and Good shooting from there) was only 4/12.

Won the board battle by 16, so I doubt anyone will be threatening us in the rebound margin 'race' this week. The scorekeeper for some reason 'cheated' Rodriguez out of his last rebound there near the end of the game. He already had 10; grabbed that last one to make 11, but the final stats still show 10.

Has anyone checked the record for made 3s against ETSU is? Tonight's 17 is like, a big number. However, unlike the Furple debacle, I think a large % of their 3-ball attempts were pretty-well-guarded this game.

Have no clue what Baucom was so upset about on that 5th foul on Stallworth. Absolutely the correct call, and not even close. I think his view was in line with the action, so he had a harder time seeing who created the contact. But if that's the case, a coach shouldn't make a fool of himself on something like that.

Hate to say it..........but if we had been playing any of the top 6 or so teams in the conference tonight, we may well have lost another one.

I know this should maybe go in one of the other threads, but since it seemed connected to our game, being concomitant.......
I watched a fair amount of the Furple win over UNC-G. They looked SOO confident compared to UNC-G. Yes, it was in Greenville, but the whole Paladin atmosphere on the court seemed to be "of course we're going to win in the end". Rafferty went for 26 and 10, on 10/13 from the field, whilst adding 5 steals to his remarkable collection. The Paladins blocked *10* Spartan shots. That's confidence. The guys from G'boro had previously won 8 in a row. With each team winning at home by 10, they're now dead even on the year (in points scored).

I was also following, but not watching, the VMI/Wofford game. The Keydets poured it on there for a couple of periods in the second half. Trouble is...........they were down 25 at the end of the *first* half.

Furman is peaking at right time of year.
I think they will win SoCon tourney if Woodard
stumbles.

I think he probably meant the Bucs may not reach the championship game, losing in one of the earlier rounds.

Tied for 3rd. 20 wins, but can’t really win regular season championship. Tourney championship the only ticket to the dance. How does coach get them up to finish season. All on remaining schedule except Greensboro playing for little or nothing at this point. Maybe these folks will be struggling with incentive as well. If Wofford finishes undefeated in conference, does this carry over to Asheville? Speaking of Asheville:
