Still one of the best self deprecating jokes a Houston fan made years ago.

I've been called 'poor' while leaving a game at Ford Stadium.

Once while playing a #3 at the time Oklahoma at home, I was in the center of the TU student section in Skelly stadium that was 90%+ crimson because people were paying twice our season ticket value for the games. The student section was not happy about the situation, they rode the OU players and talked trash to anyone who would listen. A small raging spot of blue in a sea of red.

At half time we trailed 3-0 and the exchanges were quite entertaining. OU took control and got out to quite a lead. The OU fans started to get after it. After one score by the Sooners a mid-thirties man in a cut off jersey who most likely has never attend a college class turned around and called out "How'd you lil bastards like that?" To which a TU student jumped up and said "You'll find out next year when I'm your boss".

Panama's is just always a bit cranky...you would be too if you walked around with a crick in your neck. Poor fellow.

This is HORRIBLE. It smacks of mid-major. When you add on to this only two bids, I think it should be plain to everyone here why those outside the AAC look at us as a mid-major basketball conference. Hard to argue at this point.

Here are the culprits:

UCF: 4,808
USF: 4,257
ECU: 4,129
Tulsa: 4,080
Tulane: 1,558

We're trying out new promotions to get the fans in. This one is called "$teak Night."

Can you describe this basket? It sounds nice. Is it a wicker basket? It's coming up on Easter, so maybe an Easter basket? Maybe it's something fancy that only the south knows about!

We're in the same boat as USF, probably never average over 7k.

We had a run averaging over 7k in the Jordan years and starting 14-0. If we cracked into the top 25 they would come. There would be a few hundred at Houston games until recently.

Don't know about him ever being in Memphis, but his lil ole schools football team has. Guess he's still a little bitter about that 55-22 drubbing his team took, so dissing basketball in the south probably just makes him feel better.

Currently 6 of the top ten ranked teams in the AP are from the South. So I would say basketball in the South is alive and well.

Technically, it's Hoops City. Memphis is just a nickname.

RE: 40% of the AAC...
As a Memphis fan living in New Orleans for a lot of years, that number seems high for Tulane. I am a big basketball fan. I think I have been to more Tulane games than the average Tulane fan. I can tell you that the level of support for Tulane is damn near non existent in the city. Tulane is seen as the rich/smart kids, and not really part of the fabric of the city. Tulane's outreach to the city is minimal at best. Between that and having abysmal basketball, no wonder Tulane has the worst attendance in the AAC.

Plus Kentucky and North Carolina are two of the most hoops-crazed states and they are in the south. Might be more accurate to say people in the deep south don't watch basketball.

Raleigh/Chapel Hill/Durham, definitely.

Even if you can get talented players to come play for you, that doesn't mean you can get a lot of fans to come watch.

I've always seen a lot of references to basketball being more popular in the north than south and baseball being more popular in the south than north. Sure there will be outliers.

Our attendance is bad (although it's been worse) and we haven't won a conference game, but we do have . . . Mardi Gras uniforms:

On one side Memphis

On the other Dallas, Huston, Atlanta, Orlando...the list goes on...

Even GT does not sell out in Atlanta. Unless it's tournament time people are not talking about caring about college basketball in the South...
