Joint standard deduction is like $24,000. Unless you're driving 50k+ miles per year (solely for work), I'm calling bullshite.
I drive over 1000 miles per week, solely for work and am not reimbursed a nickel.
How far away is your office? You are literally putting 200 miles per day on your vehicle.
I am an Area Manager. I work from home and call on customers within my geographic region. I do not drive into an office.

I was thinking the same... I forget what the per mile write off is, but as someone said, if you're working for someone as an _employee_ (and not a contractor) they should be reimbursing you for that mileage, not the govt.
And driving to/from work to your primary office from home should not be included in the mileage.
54.5 cents per mile
I do not drive into an office.

Including traffic, meal, bathroom that coming close to 1/2 of a work day. Truckers can do 3,000 miles a week and that starts to hit the 70 hour rule.

Doesn't matter you can't claim your round trip to and from your place of "employment". And if you are paid with a W-2 as an employee you can only claim any mileage you are not reimbursed for ie. going to and from the office to pick up the mail, office supplies etc. Then you can only claim that mileage if the extent is over 2% of your gross income. If you are driving 1000 miles per week without reimbursement you need to find a new job. If you live that far from your job and you have been claiming it you better hope there are no CPAs or IRS mods on this board, and you need to move closer to your job.

Correct, and if you worked from your home office, you used to not be able to count the distance to your first destination, and the distance from your last destination back to your home. They may have changed that over the years, but it used to be in effect .

RE: Anybody started their taxes?
You know i just looked at that number...
#1 If you're not claiming reimbursemnt on the mileage...
1000 miles a week at 54c a mile, you're letting the company keep $28,000 of your money a year, just so you can tell the govt to give you some back at the end of the tax season? Wow. Just Wow! Get that reimbursed immediately, and just drop that in an account somewhere, cd, stock market, 401k whatever...
Heck, I only really had to make one long trip every couple of years for the casino (like 800 miles every 3 years), and you can be sure they were reimbursing me that immediately...
Quote: you used to not be able to count the distance to your first destination, and the distance from your last destination back to your home. They may have changed that over the years, but it used to be in effect .
I want to say that got changed pretty quick, as the IRS realized they were giving up tax funds by making it non-claimable or something.

Consequently, you should ask your employer to reimburse you for your mileage. The costs are deductible by your employer and tax-free to you so long as you keep accurate track of your mileage. Your employer can use the standard mileage rate (54.5 cents per mile in 2018) to calculate your reimbursement.

What business do you own as an employee and which deduction should you have been entitled to?
I pay all of my operating expenses... car, entertainment, supplies, storage, etc... which previously were significant deductions. Those were wiped out and employers were given a tax cut. For me, thats a significant transfer.
When you use a personal vehicle for work and lose the write off of that it's a big deal. Depreciating one out in 4 to 5 years or sooner is a killer of an expense to lose. I haven't done mine this year, but as a retiree, I'll be interested to see how we get treated.
In the first 20 years of my married work life I put well over 100,000 miles on a personal vehicle used for work, per year. If I had lost that deduction I would have been forced to change occupations. In my non profit life for the 20 years after that, I still got the vehicle deduction, but the miles were well under 20,000 a year so it wouldn't have made so great an impact there.
I'll be interested to see how this change is compensated to the Auto industry. If it forces employers to provide a fleet of vehicles that they can deduct then it might equal out some. If not it going to kill traveling reps and may wipe out that line of work altogether.

RE: Anybody started their taxes?
Mine are done except for waiting for one last W-2 for my wife. Currently getting about a $4k refund thanks to a nice tuition deduction for my daughter who started college this year.
Unfortunately, I have no clue what this last employer withheld or how much was earned as my wife never got her paystubs online when she was working and she no longer works there...lol
Either way, I'm hoping to still be in the range of a $3,500 refund at least!
FYI P.S.: When comparing things to last year, you can't just look at your refund. That's really meaningless. You could make an estimate payment of $1 million and then say you got a huge refund. You need to look at your taxable income from year to year, your deductions and exemptions, and your tax rate for a real comparison.

IMO, the Federal Government should be required to mail each taxpayer a list of Tax Law changes as soon as they are passed and should be required to also list the dates for which new Tax provision goes into effect. There is no way that the average working, taxpayer has the time to seek out the changes on their own. And what these changes frequently do is prop up the tax preparation firms, and the CPA's. When I worked I could afford a CPA to handle my taxes. When I was young and married I couldn't afford one and now that I'm retired I don't have to. But still, I have not heard one word all year about major tax changes, not one. I didn't figure to get another break this year like last year's Presidential perk, and while I'm not overly worried about it, the changes could really hurt the kids. We'll see. But my point is the public should never get blindsided by these things.
Shame on the damned government. Under Obama it was getting to where they couldn't even get the damned tax forms out before the end of March. But if we had been late in filing we would have been hit with penalties for their failure to do their damned jobs for the American people.

My take on this is Mensa and his employer worked the numbers and saw where each could make more money by Mensa covering his own expenses and taking the .54 a mile deduction. So it was more of a benefit to Mensa to take the mileage deduction than to be reimbursed by his employer.
They worked the system and now that is closed off to him. This is probably one of those 1% of people filing cases. Clearly not the norm.
My sons will be getting back $820 and $495 more than if they used last years tax system.

As I said above, you can't just look at refunds alone. Additionally, the withholding tables changed to account for the lower tax rates. So if everything was the same as the prior year, their refund should not have really changed at all.

My sons are in their mid 20s basically just starting out. Using a simple tax return (turbotax) it compares the same income to last year and tells you the difference.
The big difference is since the new tax laws one received a $2 an hour raise and the other will be going from a 30k job to 50-55k at Alcoa in a new line that is back up and running...cheap China Steel took the line away and President got it back.

This was not, as you imply, my employer and me gaming the system...the entire industry handles employee mileage the same; but with the elimination of the mileage deduction, they'll be forced to change.
