Many of us respect him a lot. Some of us just think that the mere signing of a player means we should win all of our games. We ignore that other teams have the returning POY in the conference, or a player that nearly carried a team to the CAA title. I still think there is a chance that this team, this year still goes on a run if we can prevent the negative forces from overcoming the team.
I won't go back to the magical runs in 2008, or the 2010 team that might have gotten at large bid, let's look only at the 5 years since 2014
2014- Lost in the finals(Delaware)
2015-Lost in the finals(Northeastern) That loss followed an exhausting double OT win in the semis. Neither of the above two teams has won any other championships before or since in the CAA.
2016-Lost in the semis to Hofstra. Hofstra lost in OT to UNCW in the finals. Hofstra has zero CAA titles.
2017- Lost in the semis to UNCW. That UNCW team probably represents the best CAA team in the last 5 years. The Tribe beat UNCW during the regular season, one of the few losses that team had and its first, I believe in conference that season. Yet, the constant posting here is that Tribe team underachieved.
2018- Lost in the semis to Charleston(again the eventual champion and host school). The Tribe ended Charleston's 10 game winning streak the week before and was the only team to actually beat the Cougars over the last 6 weeks.
Add JMU in the shortened 2013, and you have 5 different winners in the last 6 tourneys. Only UNCW has been more successful that the Tribe(although Hofstra, Northeastern, and now Charleston are close in terms of overall finish and tournament victories over that span). Hofstra has been great so far, but what if they lose in the tourney? Would they fire Joe? They have no tournament titles ever in the CAA. But, they are in the top 4-5 every year.
You want to try and use this as a means to upgrade resources, I am fine with that. But, this team has had 5 freshman and 2 guys who barely played last year. Rowley has played very little and has been ineffective. Both Pierce and Milon have had bouts of injuries and also have struggled through some portions. I thought the guys played very hard Saturday. We just did not make shots and the foul disparity was brutal. Not only do they have talent, but Charleston might get a lot of calls in the tournament. They certainly did last year in the final against Northeastern.
Finally, Nathan is having a very good season. We lament here that he should get the ball every possession as if he would score 50+. But, teams are already trying to double team him in spots. There are other times that he has an opening and passes instead to a wide open teammate who misses the shot. But, it is still a good play. His passing has greatly improved and he played very hard Saturday. I just hope the guys can rally together with the coaches and get a win Thursday. It is not like they aren't trying or giving up.
