David Haugh of 670 The Score in Chicago reports that the Bucs have interest in Brian Kelly.

Kelly, 57, has coached the Irish since 2010. He has been linked in the past to NFL openings, interviewing with the Eagles in 2013, when they hired Oregon coach Chip Kelly. It’s unclear whether he’s interested in coaching the Bucs.

Per Haugh, the Bucs may be willing to offer upwards of $10 million per year to Kelly. Tampa also has been linked to Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.

I have always thought BK would be a better pro coach than a college coach. Granted, his offenses wouldn't work in the NFL, and he would have to hire a pro-style OC. But If he ever did make the jump, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he was successful.

I agree. I just don't think TB is a real stable franchise worth jumping to. Seems like he's maxed out at ND though. Can't see him building a team capable of being competitive with the top tier programs (AL, Clem, OU, UGA, and OSU)

I'll say this -- Notre Dame would scare me a hell of a lot more than WVU in regards to Fickell, although I think Fickell would need to follow up with another 10-win season before he got a serious look there.

I doubt Notre Dame dips into the UC well again for a BK replacement. Their fans will insist on a bigger name-- Meyer, Stoops, Pat Fitzgerald.

I'm not sure Kelly's sideline tantrums would go over well with professional athletes.

Wow!

Serial job hopper.

Ultimately, i can't see this mattering much to us. He'll be recruiting kids who likely aren't going to be the ones we're after....for the most part. Surely there will be some exceptions.

Has Fickell #1

Absolutely no way BFDF leaves Cincinnati for WVU. When will the media learn that it is easier to win at UC than the vast majority of other FBS programs? Racking up 10+ wins per year is much less of an accomplishment at UC than somewhere like App State, Troy, and even the UKs and WVUs of the world. We simply outmatch everyone in our conference (minus maybe UCF) in terms of resources and recruiting territory.

Butch Jones was merely competent, and managed to win big here... Brian Kelly took us to 2 BCS bowls and a #3 ranking, and has struggled to do much better at Notre Dame even with endless resources and 5-star talent.

These media pundits act like winning at UC is a huge challenge, but it is WAY harder to win at places like Vanderbilt and Wake Forest, as well as pretty much every other non-blue blood program. We have loads of underrated local talent at our disposal, and an easier schedule than anyone in the P5.

Don't get me wrong, BFDF's rapid turnaround is quite impressive. And once we rejoin a P5 conference, it will be much harder to win 10+ games here... but for the time being, winning lots of games here doesn't make you the next Knute Rockne or Bear Bryant. The media and other athletic directors need to recognize this.

Wholeheartedly agree with this point. It's something we - as the shunned in the G5 - have been saying forever. With the CDH move it appears the rest of the world is starting to awaken to this reality.

https://www.si.com/college-football/2019...witter.com

Quote:"Many parts of the move make sense, even if the headline was an eyebrow-raiser. It’s evidence that the imagined gulf between the Power 5 and the best of the Group of Five is a mirage, that there is more nuance to evaluating a coaching job than simply the school’s conference or its television deal."

OSU hires a Passing Game Coordinator/QB Coach for a base salary of $950k. A position coach!

Athletes get only a scholarship? Can't leave as easily as coaches can?

Harder and harder to be a fan of this?

And we're here hoping CLF gets an INCREASE to what? something like $2.5M to split between 12-14 coaches? sheesh.

Our assistant pool is already $2.5M. Houston is paying their assistant pool $4.5M. Hopefully CLF's extension gets something closer to that ballpark.

Thanks for the info - wasn't sure on the exact numbers. Still ridiculous that we're hoping we can shell out for 4.5M and Ohio State has a single coach making 1/4th of that. Difference between the haves and haves nots is always clear.

RE: 2018/2019 College Football Coaching Carousel
Too early to say we're out of the woods as far as retaining Freeman, but I think this seems like an encouraging development for us in light of how I was beginning to see the tea leaves:

Quote:Ohio State is replacing defensive coordinator Greg Schiano with a pair of new defensive coaches, one of them a longtime assistant from rival Michigan.

...Former Wolverines defensive line coach Greg Mattison and former San Francisco 49ers assistant Jeff Hafley will join the Buckeyes as co-defensive coordinators, the school announced Monday afternoon.

...In another move on the defensive coaching staff, Day has promoted defensive line coach Larry Johnson to associate head coach...

Weird development in that I'd heard rumors of Al Washington, rather than Mattison, making the jump to OSU. Of course, this leaves UM with a defensive opening and Mattison proves assumed loyalties don't always guide behavior. But now it looks like maybe UM is keeping Al Washington as LB coach and Don Brown as DC. But since I was getting increasingly convinced that we might lose Freeman to a high-level B10 DC job, this gives me some hope that he'll be staying another year at least as it's a lot harder to see him leaving for a position coach job (even if it has a slight pay raise), especially at a position other than LB.

WTH? If I was going to go after a college coach, it sure as heck wouldn't be Kliff Kingsbury!
