App State is a football brand.....Troy is up there too and would definitely be in the Top 5.

Both are not quite there yet. Need to be ranked for at least half a season and repeat this in the following year and ideally produce a Heisman contender or go to a NY6 bowl. Big upset wins and bowl wins are nice but both need more Top 25 rankings and go to bigger bowl games. Same applies to UAB, FAU, etc

W Michigan, Utah St, NIU, SD St etc have done most of this and more.

Agree with this post a lot. I will also say there have been a few years I think Troy got hosed out of a Top 25 ranking. I think had you guys played in a better conference you would have been. BTW, that is NOT a knock on the current Sun Belt, but the old one.

Also there wasn't even a mention of Troy over UAB by the dude originally questioning the Marshall guy's opinion.

That's exactly how I took it. Esp with some of the App fans commenting "this is gonna be good" and such.

I figured this is a convo that has taken place in the past.

It happens in pretty much every thread that involves either team. Our rivalry is truly hate-filled, and both team's fans are guilty of hijacking threads at times (here, reddit, twitter, etc.). I just happen to see GaSo doing it more.

If you have time, you should read into our rivalry, it has a pretty good history in the 30-ish years its been happening.

I will actually do that. I remember this rivalry from the old 1-AA days. I have a lot of respect for both programs and I'm still frustrated and aggravated with our conference/university leadership throughout the last expansion process. Troy, App St, Ga Southern were the NO BRAINERS the last go around.

I think had the AAC taken all the teams at once then things would have went much different. I think picking 1-3 teams at a time is what threw the wrench in the things.

don't get me wrong, I have little doubt that in time, this will boil down to a pissing match between App & GS, but at this point, it was not directed at any form of pissing match.

Except it was pretty clear I wasn't just talking about us, but other SBC and CUSA programs (particularly programs like Troy) that have been around the FBS longer. You read into it what you wanted, not uncommon at all in accusations of GS fans trying to make the discussion about themselves. I've pointed this out many times.

From what I've seen most of the complaints I've seen about GS fans either miss complicity by some other group of fans or are just stupid. I saw in the Troy-UL thread (for example) where a GS fan remarked it was part of big cross-divisional matchups and some UL fan complained about someone trying to hijack the thread.

And I've noticed it's mostly Texas State or UL fans that complain about it. IN the StAte-App thread where I was comparing our defense to App's and how I thought Ark State would measure up it turned into a GS-App p***ing contest and at least Ark State fans acknowledged it was both group of fans that contributed to the derailing.

Bobcat, I think the western schools would be much happier and much better off together as well. Who would you want in a western based version of a potential split? You have a good core with all the Texas schools.

Keep NMSU, Lose Tulane . . I mean why would they leave the AAC? They’re P6 baby. Not sure that Arky St. would want any part of a grouping soooo TX heavy. And I’d take UL . . one of these days we’ve got to beat ‘em.

All of these schools have practically zero brand recognition with the general fan. That's why we are all in the conferences we are in. No one knows who Coastal is unless they watch college baseball. Most people here thought we we were hosting multiple FCS schools last year with CCU and Alabama A&M on the schedule.

Sports wise, people know UAB for basketball runs in the tournament (and that's mostly people who are 50+ years old now) and football being dropped/restored. The general public know App State as the team that beat Michigan that one year.

Only way to get true brand recognition is to win the big nationally televised games and be a consistent winner. Wins vs relevant P5 programs, bowl games, and NCAA tourney runs >>>>>>> anything else.

Most everyone has heard of UAB by now, if not then they have been living under a rock. They were already a respected basketball program. Played in the original CUSA against name opponents on a weekly basis and THEN after the fiasco of the program being killed/restarted etc. There's no comparison to name recognition.

I'm not arguing that UAB is a better football program than Ga So, I'm saying UAB has a bigger brand (name recognition) and they do.

I can tell you that when we drug UAB’s lifeless body through the streets of Conway this football season, I proudly went to work on Monday touting our win. I live and work in Atlanta, GA, and every single person that I told about our absolute annihilation of UAB responded with, “huh? What does UAB stand for?”

One person even asked me, “is that the school that won as a 16 seed in the NCAA tournament last year?”

UAB has zero brand recognition.

Louisiana would support NMSU as a full member of the Sun Belt, but our administration doesn’t want to be in a league that goes much past the Houston Dallas corridor.

Almost all of our recent projects are paid off and we are less than 3 years from a complete stadium overhaul to the tune of $75M. We are doing what we can to be ready for the next shakeup that will occur by 2023ish.

This administration would prefer to get back to our original peer institutions when we first decided to remain 1A football. We are happy with most of the current members of the Sun Belt but due to our previous administration we have lost some of our biggest rivals to realignment and our failure to prepare for other opportunities.

As far as facilities go, I’m not sure any G5 IPF/Performance Center is better than the Cajuns. Softball stadium is top 15 in the country, baseball is one of the best in the country and the Cajun Dome is great(too big IMO).

If we are in the Sun Belt in its current form by 2025 then it will be because the Sun a Belt has dominated in the field and it makes the most financial sense for the university.
