RBG Admitted to hospital
But of course it is.

Just sayin.

Not wishing any ill will on her or anyone else, but at that age it’s never anything “minor”. Especially a fall.

Hope she recovers and gets back in the game, but why?

Go enjoy a few years of well deserved retirement and chillin. Something my dad never did for himself and shoulda/coulda.

Who the fvck wants to die on the job?

Get well soon RBG, retire, and enjoy some time with your family and hopefully, some grandkids.

And yes I say the same thing about Thomas and Alito.

My grandma fell and broke her hip at age 74. She was outside on her porch in February in Connecticut for 3 hours before a passerby saw her. She made a full recovery and ended up living 9 more years.

There's a big difference between 74 and 85. Women in their 80s are three times as likely to die within a year of fracturing their hip than their peers who do not (Fwiw, women in their 70s are double so your grandmother was quite fortunate).

74 isn't 85.

This is true. Her age exacerbates every illness or accident.

That said, I pray she has a speedy recovery and as minimal lasting effects as possible.

Exactly.

The last thing I want to be doing when I'm 85 is going to work!

She's evidently fractured ribs on occasions before, so I imagine she'll be back.

My wife took her 95 year old grandmother to the doctor. After reviewing some x-rays he told my wife that her grandmother had broken bones in the past that had healed over time. He said there was no way to know how long ago the fractures occurred.

My father will be 76 in Jan. Three weeks ago he had major surgery to remove a cancerous growth and a cyst from his kidney. He's doing very well at the moment.

So, yes, age doesn't mean automatic complications, but it's more likely than not to contribute to complications.

You covered it in your last sentence, but Capt Bearcat and your wife's grandmothers were outliers. Working in health care, I see it all the time--- 80+ year old patient falls and breaks a hip, they never are the same and generally expire shortly thereafter. The trauma from the fracture of a bone that big usually exacerbates some other comorbidity, such as heart disease or diabetes--- they usually die from a heart attack or a stroke.

I have been a critical care RN for 24 years, what Capt said was correct.
When we get 80+ year olds in here, we try to prepare the family for what may happen in the next few months.
They VERY seldom return to their prior selves.
If they were not independent, they often die within 6 months.

Having broken ribs makes it hard to breathe for anyone. For a frail woman at her age to break ribs is devastating. Pneumonia can set in very quickly. Especially with it being winter.
