Dickens can certainly be disruptive in different ways on defense with his length but I don't see anyone on that team rebounding in traffic the way way Brandon Stith could or Taylor before him. Robinson takes up space and I understand he is might have some rust to work off but he doesn't appear to be a game changer. At least for last night I thought we looked better with Dickens underneath. I like the look of Dickens foul shooting touch ( much better than any Big we have had in some time) and hopefully Robinson will beigin to look better as he gains experience and confidence with playing time.
I really liked Wade's play, particularly for his first game and Reece, Kithcart, Ezikpe look like they could help as well. Anyone know why Ezikpe was wearing a knee brace? He has great size for a freshman. He moves well and could become a real crowd favorite over time.
As for the offense, it just all seemed to be dribble and drive for BJ, Caver, and Green. Not crazy about that and hope to see more crisp passing to open up some good looks at the three for Godwin and BJ. But for a first game it was definitely fun watching our new players getting some minutes.
The loss of Stiths rebounding is certainly a concern. Porter was not as good of a rebounder. I think Dickens will be a fantastic rebounder. Robinson will get rebounds just because of his size. But, additionally..Carver is a pretty good rebounder for his size and BJ helps out downlow rebounding.
Certainly a concern, but I don't think it will be an issue this year.
I hope you are correct but I don't see us getting the manly rebounds that Brandon pulled down in traffic.
I dont know that any one person will replace his rebounding, it was very good. But Carver is a good rebounder as well and Robinson/Dickens combined for 8 in 25 minutes.
One thing Dickens is gonna help is defense in the paint. Its tough to score

I'd rather not have another sport where we win only the biggest game of the season (and/or on a fluke)

VCU won't be the biggest game this season. Not even close.

Agreed - but I want to kick their teeth in. I enjoy the rivalry, but the hate is real for me. It takes me weeks to get over a loss to feces.

in your opinion, what will be the biggest game of the season?
Please dont say some forced soulless rivalry with a C-USA team like MTSU, WKU or North Florida International Atlantic University.

Probably Syracuse. Maybe Missouri if we beat Oregon State. VCU is not expected to be very good so yes, I suspect Marshall and WKU will likely be bigger games as well. Maybe not in terms of emotional hate, but in terms of their importance to the season as a whole.

Sadly, his 10 pts, 7 reb, and 7 blks in like 15 minutes was the best exhibition performance we've seen in the last decade from a big.

The cards are too stacked against us for that game (long travel, hostile environment, exceptional opponent). I wouldn’t get your hopes up for that game.

agree with you!
There are definitely other games that are more important for our NCAA tourney resume.
But as a fan looking forward to a satisfying win, VCU will always register at the top with me... right next to beating VT and UVA.

No disrespect intended to the “university”. I’ve lived here my whole life. Old habits die hard.

I still have a hard time with Hampton University, instead of Hampton Institute.

The team did seem to be looking to run and be more up tempo. Hopefully, they can continue with stiffer competition. My biggest concerns are the very bad free throw shooting and rebounding. Even Jeff stated, after the game, we are not going to be the offensive rebounding team we have been in the past and will have to find ways to get extra possessions. With the poor shooting, poor offensive rebounding is not going to make for very effective offense. I guess we will get to see what we really have on Tuesday.

I don’t think our rebounding was great last year. It was just okay. Not sure how our rebounding gets worse with two seven footers and Carver.

Stating the obvious, it comes down to a lack of assertiveness. Anton Larsen, for all his height, was not a premier rebounder.
I don't know that this will turn out to be a concern for either Robinson or Dickens this season. They certainly have the tools to be effective rebounders. But it is a bit worrying that they didn't absolutely dominate the boards against VWU, given their substantial height advantage.

We shall see Tuesday what we have. I think they will be fierce in live action.

I wouldn't say it was great, but it was top 50 in the country.
