Louisiana at App State
App opens as 24-point favorites.

Last December, App broke the Hud in 63-14 demolition, so the Cajuns will look to avenge that humiliation.

App shattered A-State on Tuesday while Louisiana racked up a school record 753 yards versus New Mexico State.

This is one of those games that is played in the same location two years in a row.

Napier has an interesting history with App State, to say the least.

ULL will enter the game in Boone with renewed confidence. If the Cajuns catch a few early breaks, they could make a game of it. If not, I think App covers in this game easily.

Predicted score:

App St 55
ULL 21

Louisiana is looking really good on O. This will be Apps biggest test on D since opening weekend.

Let see what happens. Cajuns look suspect on defense though. ULL might be the first team to score more than 10 points on App since PSU but I doubt it will be a track meet.

The Cajuns have their issues on defense. They just don't have enough good players. Two of their starters on D are walkons who were awarded a scholarship in the spring.

Napier has awarded eight players scholarships. He inherited just a few more scholarship players than an FCS school.

The Cajuns' offensive line is solid (and they have no seniors) and they have three backs that can play. They are good at the skill positions.

They have a chance to score some points. But stopping the Mountaineers will be a tough task.

The very best thing (by far) that could have happened for us happened on Saturday. UL had offensive explosion for 750+ yards and totally dominated NMSU. I would say that they definitely have App's full attention for this week. That being said, I would be very surprised if they score more than 24 points against us this week. Our defense is fairly salty. Looking forward to a good game in Boone!

I see a big dose of the AppState run game and ball control to keep the Cajun O off the field. If App is successful running the ball it would be a huge confidence booster post-Moore. I think this game comes at a perfect time for us. It should be a good test.

App will not be able to keep our offense off the field. Our D isn't good enough. Of course your backs could just fall down after 5 yards each time they carry the ball. That could work.................. 07-coffee3
As much as I hate to say it, I think App covers fairly easily. We really need a couple of good recruiting years to rebuild our talent and depth; especially on the defensive side of the ball. I do think our O will be able to move the ball and score though. 52-24 App.

Apps defense flies to the ball well but the Cajuns offense has a power run element that might be hard to control. Like all of you folks, I think App takes it but I do expect the Cajuns to score some point. 45-21.

It seems that going against 3-4 defenses for college offenses is difficult. Despite App being undersized along the line and at the outside linebacker positions, they have been playing lights out since the ULM loss last season.

Question to Louisiana followers (if any are left), have you seen a 3-4 defense this season other than Alabama? What were the results of the offense against such a scheme? Namely zone blitz schemes with 3-4 fronts?

Both NMSU and Grambling played odd fronts.

Grambling shouldn't count other than seeing the formations. Is NMSU's play calling similar to App's or have you watched enough of either to know for sure? App likes to run a lot of 4 man pressures, sending one of four linebackers on any given play depending on the offenses alignment relative to App's alignment. For blitz purposes it seems that the nickel or the safety will be sent just as often as they drop back into coverage when showing blitz.

Also, what was the cause for last seasons debacle in Boone? Ideally for Louisiana, App would see last seasons result and left off the gas a bit, but it seems that they likely smell blood in the water for the Top G5 ranking (if UCF were to lose at any point) and won't be letting up.

Also, how do your defensive backs play? Press zone, man? Off zone or man? It seems that pressing the receivers to get them off their route is best practice because single high safety looks means that Sutton is just going to be sent up the line where Thomas will air it out 3 to 4 times a game.

It's just too far from Hickory! Then you have to go up that scary mountain road that probably used to be a railroad track! Then you have the bears and wolves lining the road and it's just scary :(.

All that aside, the swamps of Louisiana are far more frightening to me than the mountains.

The staff had essentially been fired prior to that game. The kids quit on the staff and many Cajun fans tried to explain that we had major, major issues internally.

Napier took over a roster with 66 scholarship players on the roster. We are very limited talent wise on defense. We are two really strong defense heavy recruiting classes away from being anything other than a 5 to 7 win team. We are talented on offense though. Still lacking a QB who can take over a game and win it for us. But Nunez and Lewis are good enough to not cost us many games.

I’m expecting a 38-17 type game. Maybe better maybe worse, we just aren’t there yet.

That seems fair enough. App likes to play a lot of two high safety to keep everything in front of them. I'm not sure of the particulars but it seems ULL pretty much did everything they wanted last week, including long drives, chunk plays, and explosive plays for scores. The two high safety look should limit the explosive plays.

If your QB can't be counted on to take over the game with his arm, watch for App to key on the run game and force the QB to make plays throwing the ball.
