Looks like GCU just added a big piece to this season's team...
The NCAA just ruled Carlos Johnson eligible for this coming season. In my opinion, I thought he was the biggest get in Majerle's recruiting class. I just thought NMSU would get one more year to build our program before having to deal with him (Carlos Johnson).
It should make for a very interesting season.

GCU, NMSU, UVU make this a viable conference.

Don't get me wrong, I am still confident with what Jans has done. I think he has proven to be a great "hardnosed" coach and a crafty recruiter. I like our roster a lot!
The reason I feel Johnson is a good add for GCU is because I think he gives GCU an edge (identity of toughness) that very few GCU players have exhibited in the past. For the most part, Majerle has recruited a lot of highly skilled, high IQ, soft, players. Players who play a pretty NBA style of basketball but don't know how to rough it up (and deal with adversity). I don't see Johnson as being soft. To me, he has an essences of former Aggie Wendall McKines (or Tyrone Watson). Which is what the GCU choirboys badly needs.

You're not wrong. In addition to bringing toughness and leadership, Johnson will be a matchup nightmare in terms of physicality at the guard position. Given the range of Lever and elder Finke, I wouldn't be surprised to see sets that clear them out of the post and allow Johnson to work against smaller guards. Probably similar to how Majerle used Braun his freshman year.

Hmm, Keonta Vernon was the meanest, nastiest player in the WAC last year.

Mean or nasty? Naw. Tay could be intimidating but Jemerrio Jones holds the award for intimidating player. If you want cheap or dirty its probably A-a-ron Menzies.

Jemerrio intimidating? What? His game was scary good, but Jones doesn't win the 2017-18 WAC Sportsmanship award by doing things that qualify him as intimidating. I'm thinking like, "Who would I NOT want to get stuck in an Orleans elevator with at the WAC Tournament?" From last year's WAC, I go Manyang.

Intimidating doesn't have to be about worrying for your own well being. Jones was a menace and he terrorized teams/backboards for rebounds and put backs. He did it at a high level with teams trying to stop him.

Manyang did give UVU a tougher defensive identity last season. Currently, I don't see that type of player on the Wolverines roster this season. That is why I think UVU takes a step back this season.
Individually, Jemerrio did not intimidate the opposition BUT his free wheeling (energizer bubby) attitude carried over to his teammates which made NMSU a much tougher team as a whole. That is what I think Johnson can do for GCU.

I meant no disrespect in my post. I thought he was the most intimidating player last year. He was a tough dude and was a banger down low.

RE: Looks like GCU just added a big piece to this season's team...
No, not really worried. Every year GCU and it's hype machine says they are bringing in the next player that is "the one". Last year, Benson with his "final 4 experience" was going to give GCU the edge for the WAC crown. I watched Oregon during the run they had with Benson on the team and he was a non factor in their run to the final 4 and I said it last year that Benson was no big deal, no disrespect to GCU fans on this forum. You notice NMSU as an institution and in general their fan base just sits back and relaxes and waits for the next championship run. We don't need hyped expectations or circus like midnight madness where our coach dresses up like batman and acts like a cheerleader instead of a coach. NMSU definitely has to work for it cause the WAC teams are all shooting to beat us cause we are the big dog. However, I totally agree with Lever being preseason choice for WAC player of the year. I don't think he will win it but he is definitely a first teamer in the WAC. If Frayer also plays a little more consistent GCU is a lock for 2nd place in the WAC.

Surprisingly, none of the Aggie posters have mentioned that is appears NMSU picked up another real good player. It is unclear whether he will play this season. But NMSU picked up 6'6 Juco Trevelin Queen from NMMI. He was originally signed by Western Kentucky but left the program. Queen is ranked as the #8 JC player nationally. He averaged 26 ppg last season.

Jerome Garrison tried to curb stomp Isiah Umipig on the court when they played the first year together in the WAC. GCU has had some tough/dirty players
