Sounds horrific but I'm proud that fellow UCF Players tried to intervene and did not cover up collaborating damaging information on a teammate,along with the quick action by UCF's Police Dept and Coach Heupel.

I'm glad UCF is not a Baylor or FSU where acts like this were covered up for years.

Wow, I feel bad for the young woman.

Good thing this was handled appropriately by the university, law enforcement, and the athletic dept. The university now needs to get the woman as much support as she needs during this time.

I really like the UCF Police Chief's STRONG statement that is definitely not the norm at places like Baylor, FAU, Penn St, Michigan State, etc...

“The UCF Police Department is committed to a thorough, professional investigation of all criminal incidents reported to us, and we’re dedicated to a culture of care that starts by believing the brave survivors who seek our assistance,” UCF Police Chief Carl Metzger said in a statement Wednesday. “This survivor’s well-being will continue to be a priority for our department and our university.”

Good for UCF. I hope they follow through with their statements. Of course anyone is innocent until proven guilty, but the circumstances do look very bad. It would seem there's 2 ways to handle sexual assault cases in Florida.
1. UCF
2. FSU

I'm afraid it likely happens everywhere you congregate immature 18-22 year-olds with raging hormones experiencing freedom for the first time, particularly with alcohol or drugs involved.

You could probably Google all of our schools and find a similar story regarding outstanding sexual assault lawsuits. I know Memphis immediately kicked a player off the team for sexual assault last season. It's how the University swiftly acts on them as serious crimes rather than financial threats to the Athletic Department/University, etc. to sweep under the rug. That's the main point the OP was getting at.

UCF acted swiftly and appropriately and didn't compromise Justice for the sake of keeping talent on the Gridiron whose absence might threaten another undefeated season and an Access Bowl slot.

Sadly, a sect of USF fans are probably pissed that UCF handled it the appropriate way and didn't do a Baylor/FSU act. Their hate for anything UCF runs that deep.

Come on guys....let's be bigger than the situation.

Instead, understand that our Sec of Education is seeking to push through policy that will severely curtail victims rights for on campus sexual assault and give more rights to the accuser. You guys are smart enough to google this yourself ....as my wish is not to turn this into a political debate. However, if you are looking somewhere to aim your ire...this proposal would be a great target. If passed situations like Baylor are more likely to occur.

Definitely a two-edged sword. Former ECU coach Steve Logan said he was once instructed by an AD to suspend a player for a similar charge. The player was later found innocent. He said he would never, never, never suspend another player until proven guilty.

On the other hand a student could face a formal school hearing, which is independent of any criminal proceeding. Judging the standard of student conduct at most universities is not the same as proving guilt. UCF's student handbook says,

The student shall not be forced to present self-incriminating information; however, the University is not required to postpone disciplinary proceedings pending the outcome of any civil or criminal case. The University’s formal hearing is not a criminal or judicial proceeding and is designed to address student behavior; therefore, alleged violations of the UCF Rules of Conduct will be addressed independently of any outcome imposed by the courts for a criminal offense. UCF-4.009(4)(f)

If found "in violation", penalties range from warning to expulsion to revocation of degree. UCF moving ahead with a hearing would show the seriousness with which they regard the allegations. This would also put the university in compliance with Title IX and therefore not in violation of federal law, and more importantly would be the ethical thing to do.

It's amazing how many sleazy universities have gotten away with violating federal law, even after their cover-ups were exposed.

Racist and Rapist are two labels that smear someone guilty until proven innocent.
